This is just destined to prove a wise and judicious decision, a true testament to all the prudence, sagacity, and statesmanship that I associate with this administration.

Forget whether they should do this, I want to know how they think they can do it against a bunch of tech savvy teenagers.

Hell, if they succeed in banning these I will install the apps myself and I am not exactly a teenager.

Those Kpop stans on TikTok reserving tickets for his Tulsa rally must have really struck a nerve.

Good.

Not subby and I obviously know nothing about Tiktok other than that they trolled Trump. Still not sure how they will stop people from installing it if they want it.

I'm just curious, did you have issues with Tiktok before dear leader said it was bad?

TikTok was bad before Trump gave a shiat.

TikTok is pretty horrible even without the spying.

I'm not disputing that but it is quite shocking how Trump not liking something will so quick to trigger so many people who never gave a thought of it before.

Anybody with any sort of connection to IT Security has hopefully been well aware of how insidious they are for a while.

OK, fine. Tik tok is horrible. What are they going to do about Facebook and Twitter right in our own backyard?

I don't know much about it (also old), but the yougnuns seem to like it a lot.

I forget why I'm supposed to be so much more scared of ChiComs than home-grown thought manipulators, anyway. Seems like the GOP/Trump people are a lot more dangerous.

Without getting into too much detail - they created lots of work for me.  TikTok was the primary social media platform that was propagating the 5G/COVID-19 conspiracy theory.

Imagine a country with infinitely more wealth than someone like Russia, better intel, and plenty of servants working in our government, instead of just one or two moles here and there...

Then imagine that country, with no regard for copyright laws ,intellectual property rights, or privacy, had access to people's information, knowing that most schlubs don't bother with unique passwords.

Considering that Trump directly solicited the CCP for help in winning the election, I would think he would be overjoyed at the presence of TikTok.

Sure, because we know the Trump administration is very concerned with foreign spying.

Seriously, almost everything Trump has done, from demolishing every policy Obama right up to actually running for president, has been out of spite.  Tik Tok users made him look like a moron for claiming a million people would be at his Tulsa rally.  My money is on that as a reason.

While Trump's regime could be stepping up their concern over Tik Tok because of the cyber-pantsing their users gave them the US government's concern over Tik Tok isn't new.

People are angry at things they have no control over. They need someone like Trump to direct that anger, no matter how displaced.

Not that I don't think it's possible or even unlikely that the Chinese government is using that data in any meaningful capacity, but your link mentions no evidence random clipboard data is actually being to uploaded to China or anywhere else for that matter (All of ByteDance's servers are located in the US and in Singapore)

And it seems odd to focus only on TikTok when so many other apps were caught doing the same thing.

Considering how many TikTok users are teenagers, it seems counterproductive to use it to mine data about Americans and other people when it's probably far easier, faster, cheaper, and more reliable to simply purchase the data from the countless brokers that sell the same information that might be gleaned from a TikTok account.
Plus that can be done in secret.

2020-07-07 4:27:22 AM
Or maybe it's because it's Spyware?

Or because we're in a trade war, and economic losses to the other side count as a victory when it costs us nearly nothing to ban an app?

Or it could just be to get Trump to stop spending so much time watching short clips there because they match his attention span?

Two things can be true; can three?
