Way to cheapen Rey's victory by making it about a bunch of old dead dudes, you stupid asshole

The fact that there are no deleted scenes or director's commentary on the Rise of Skywalker home media releases make me think that whole "JJ's secret cut was shut down by Disney" conspiracy from a few months ago is true.

That said, there is nothing short of a total redo that could salvage this movie. Making Rey a Palpatine is the dumbest goddamn thing in the entire 11 film set.

Seems like someone didn't understand the movie and wasted a lot of time to prove it

I don't even want to think about that execrable mess of a movie. My PTSD from it was soothed by the last season revival of Clone Wars (maaaaan that was some masterful storytelling) and I don't want to ruin my recovery.

I agree, but enough about JJ Abrams. What did you think of the video?

That sounds similar to "fixing" a house that was built entirely of windows, and immediately collapsed on itself, by adding a mini-fridge.

In that while a mini-fridge is lovely, it doesn't address the main problem, which is that there is no house.

That movie tried waaaaaay too hard to undo everything from the second movie.

The whole last trilogy, like the Jar-Jar trilogy, should be removed from canon.

Like Batman, we can try again until we get it right.

You can't fix something that fundamentally broken.  Might as well try to run a hose down to the Titanic and pump air into it in the hopes you can refloat it.

they should've just owned it.  "I can bring leia back, I can bring luke back, etc" and just had her turn and then ben also turning to sadly kill rey I would've enjoyed more.

kathleen kennedy wasn't going to have rey die or be evil tho.

It was an enjoyable movie.
Last Jedi was the best of the 3.
They made mistakes with characters in all 3.

What they should be most ashamed about is listening to people crying on the Internet about the Last Jedi and pandering to them.

I didn't like Rose's character in Last Jedi, but she didn't deserve what they did to her in Rise of Skywalker

I think the Star Wars franchise has become a box, a profitable box but a box. Each movie must accessible to new and casual fans, it must have cameos and Easter eggs for hardcore fans, it must have a lot of action and effects and less dialog to play better in non-English speaking markets. Competing business needs lead to these less than satisfying films. Star Wars has ceased to be art and is a consumer product.

That was the worst 2 1/2 hours I'd spent in the theaters in a long time. Doesn't matter if it had Star Wars in the name, it was a fundamentally terrible movie on a basic level.

/some of the people I went with ate the blatant fan service up. I kept my opinions to myself

You're joking, right?

The first Star Wars movie ended with the protagonist getting the key to winning directly from the disembodied voice of an old, dead dude.

Star Wars was arguably only art in The Empire Strikes Back and only because Lucas lost a measure of control of that production. Before that, Star Wars was a way to make a Flash Gordon movie without the license . And it was still absolutely a consumer product. Lucas didn't retain the toy marketing rights by accident or because he wanted to create "art."

After Empire, Lucas re-asserted his control, and Return Of The Jedi became a commercial for teddy bears.

Finally, the Mandalorian ticks off all those boxes you listed, and it is commercially and critically popular. Sometimes a fast food company actually manages to make a good cheeseburger.

It was a voice of an old dead dude that got Luke to believe in himself and use the farking Force in Star Wars, much as it was a whole bunch of dead people who got Rey to believe in herself and use the farking Force in Rise. No one directly intervened. This just shiats on Rey when she already had barely anything to do over all three movies, much like everybody else for that matter

I am so happy to see other Star Wars fans rip these "newer" movies to shreds.  I saw the first one 7 times back in 1977 (7th grade) and progressively the movies got worse from there.

I was under the impression that when a new Star Wars movie came out, it was perfect from the get go. All the people shout..."Take my money!! Oh I can't wait for the new movie..."

Good to see I am not alone.

RoS is what happens when you pander to the never-be-getting laid brigade. JJ even gave them a specific no-homo character for Poe. After that is every other idiotic thing out of the EU. I'm still surprised there wasn't a Yuuzhan Vong cameo.

Except with Carrie Fisher being dead, you really can't take another shot at a sequel trilogy. Like them or hate them (I hate them) this is what we got.

The ST is what happens when you make connected trilogy rife with continuity but STUPIDLY have neither a overall plan nor the same writer for all three. It's like a serial novel where the author changes each chapter.

Yes, but it had an excuse:  It happened before we actually discovered the Titanic, so it's vaguely plausible if you squint hard enough, based on the knowledge of the time.

"Let the past die," said the seventh sequel of a forty-year-old franchise kept alive explicitly to cash in on nostalgia

Might have worked if she ever was "bad" or even wrestled with it for longer than 40 seconds of screen time. Plus they already did the bad turns good thing with two other main characters.

2020-07-07 10:18:03 AM
That was actually well done.  Completely removing individual thoughts of what that does to character arcs and overall meaning, purely from an aesthetic look and feel it actually looks real.

I find it kind of mind boggling that they hired Jodie Comer and then totally wasted her acting skills in a small cameo role. Then to top it off you had Keri Russell but you never saw her face.

You Are All Sheep: kathleen kennedy wasn't going to have rey die or be evil tho.

I would've preferred a story where Kylo and Rey see-saw which of them is evil and are ultimately BOTH redeemed in the end.  It felt like that's what the films were playing with but never really had the guts to deal with.

It is worth watching Disney Gallery: the Mandalorian.  The reason that show is good is because every damn person working on it absolutely loves the source material and it shows.  Watching Gina Carano grin like an idiot through the whole thing because she is so happy to be involved is the icing on the cake.

dittybopper: You can't fix something that fundamentally broken.  Might as well try to run a hose down to the Titanic and pump air into it in the hopes you can refloat it.

It was fundamentally broken in the original trilogy.  Multiple internal retcons, inconsistent character motivations, breaks its own continuity rules, the list goes on and on.  We have rose colored glasses and a massive amount of nostalgia, due mostly to our age when first viewing it and the technical achievement it represented at the time.

The same problems existed in the sequel trilogy, and are magnified in our eyes because we have such a detailed understanding of what came before.

Am I the only one that liked the prequel trilogy better than the sequel trilogy?  The prequels were bad, but had had better villains and a coherent story.  It also didn't turn my childhood heroes into washed up losers.

My other hot take: Baby Yoda is a million times more cloying than the Ewoks ever were.

No, you're not.  For all their failures the prequels felt epic, expansive, and had a cohesive narrative.  The sequel trilogy felt like it took place in a very small universe.

I mean the movie is simpleton enough how did you imagine this is one persons' personal victory, and not get that it is the ideal of good triumphs over evil?
I'd say that backing the concept of her dialog (I am all the jedi) it more would have been the ghosts of all the dead Jedi, like a crowd of them, with all the kids Anikin killed up front, and that they and the apparently young version of Anikn that killed them all is there too... ;)

Lucas wanted the production to go faster and to focus more on action. Producer Gary Kurtz backed up director Irvin Kershner instead, so Empire went overbudget and overschedule, to Lucas's displeasure.

The Mandalorian singlehandedly saved Star Wars for me. After the sucklitude of the Prequels and Sequels, it's wonderful to have something that still brings the magic of weird alien landscapes and characters. Not humans in Star Trek conference rooms.
