Well, yeah, man, you see, like, all the tanks we come up against are bigger and better than ours, so all we can hope to do is, like, scare 'em away, y'know. This gun is an ordinary 76mm but we add this piece of pipe onto it, and the Krauts think, like, maybe it's a 90mm. We got our own ammunition, it's filled with paint. When we fire it, it makes... pretty pictures. Scares the hell outta people! We have a loudspeaker here, and when we go into battle we play music, very loud. It kind of... calms us down.

If he hadn't been an absolute space-cadet who despised authority, he'd have made a hell of a good tank platoon commander.

He was probably the most laid-back, chilled-out, dude in the fictional versions of WWII ever. But once shiat got real, he knew what the hell he was doing and how to avoid getting his balls getting shot off while shooting the other guys balls off.

For those who don't know what this is all about.

About six weeks ago, I was making that movie quote (negative waves, Moriarity) to my wife, and she had never seen Kellys Heroes before.  She's not the type for war movies, but watched it with me and absolutely loved it.   Oddball has always been one of my favorite movie characters, bar none.  And, even though he's a hippie in WW2, he seemed to be good at his job, with the right motivation 😜

He had to have some idea of what he was doing to be made a tank commander to begin with, and his official CO had to have been a bit of a character to begin with to let Oddball slide.

Yea I'm surprised his CO didn't loose his head over the behavior. Oh wait...

Along with TFA, sort of the inverse, without proving anything, but as a sometime hang and paraglider pilot of some moderate experience, as well as a slacker bird watcher, I've often speculatively explained what I think is the same or related phenomena  that soaring birds like raptors, vultures and crows/ravens use to play or stay "directly" into the wind at cliff faces and other abrupt wind dams. I say "directly" because watching the birds do it and trying to accomplish the same, they are constantly correcting at high frequency.  Much better than I could given the limits of the surfaces I could control. Yeah yeah maybe not so CSB.
