(Daily Mail)   I don't know what a Tik Tok is, but if Australia wants to ban it, it must be extremely deadly   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line

If you banned every app that steals and sells your data, well, you'd have to ban every app.

Since this is the Daily Fail, I now question the existence of TikTok

Bovine Diarrhea Virus: If you banned every app that steals and sells your data, well, you'd have to ban every app.

Only from google play and the IOS store.

Alternatively, just outlaw stealing of data and make the punishment for getting caught that the CEO of the company (all the CEOs during the time the offending app was available online) have to be eaten by the other executives.  Alive.  And streamed online in 4k 60hz.  And they have to eat all of them.  Even down to cracking the big bones open and sucking out the marrow.  And if they refuse, they starve to death in a concrete room, while being filmed in 4k.

I bet apps stop stealing data after a dozen or so cannibal feasts.

Canada just suspended it's extradition treaty with Hong Kong, because of China's new laws, that make the online activities of everyone, everywhere, potential reasons for arrest. And China is apparently seeking to arrest people over it already.

So, yes, delete TikTok now.

No. This is different.

Lots of apps sniff your data.

Most apps are just trying to make a quick buck reselling it.

Tik Tok was purpose built by the Chinese government to go viral and get the Chinese intelligence agency a foothold on westerners phones.

A very few apps are run by nation states. Their motivations are entirely different.

The idea that there is somehow a less secure platform than windows boggles my mind.  Not only that, but you specifically have to allow those apps to steal data from you (in return to use the app), but it doesn't stop anybody (including too often myself, who should know better).

The key to computer security is a user that isn't a total moron. Can't blame that on MS.

Yup...right after the unicorn and the pegasus come in and fix the wiring closet.

If you designed a system that expects the user not be a total moron...you are the total moron.

Sort of like how Google was helped out by a different government's secret spy agency?

China isn't doing anything new, they are just learning from the masters.

Helped out, perhaps, but purpose-built from the ground up to be a means of domestic espionage.

In the US, you don't have to worry that you and your family will be disappeared if you send a text message on an Android phone saying that you support civil rights for racial and ethnic minorities, or if you post a video on Youtube saying so. Saying "Free Hong Kong" on tiktok is, at best, a one-way ticket to premaban-ville.

China's integration in TOs its companies' products are on a whole other level.

And yeah, if I have to throw in with an intelligence apparatus I choose the CIA vs Xi's forced sterilization squad.

When you design a moron proof system God designs a bigger moron. The only moron-proof computer is one that doesn't ever turn on.

Nah, deadly is fine. Australian bans are applied to stuff like small breasts, so I guess they're against TikTok because it's mostly used by teens and children and decent mammaries are hard to find in that market.

Australia does not ban dangerous things.  They, in fact, welcome it.

Weren't members of Trumps administration using this app to communicate with each other?

If governments gave a shiat about their people they would have banned the data collection habits of all these apps and services. The right fight was lost with google. The rear guard fight with Tik Tok is correct but too late. That app is hot radioactive garbage but we're all sitting on the exposed core anyway. My password is xxxxxxxxccccczzzzzz......... So then just ban the apps that steal your data and send it to the People's Republic of China.
