Yes, let's fight over this.  Because any time we spend fighting over symbolic gestures is less time spent holding people accountable on substantive justice issues.  Feels like this is going to be a win-win for the assholes, especially if people spend significant time for the song.  Almost like that's the plan

Maybe someone will!

It talks about how they have come to the place their fathers hoped to be, through tears and blood, out of the gloom until they can finally stand where the white gleam of their bright star is cast.

It's saying that deep inside all blacks want to be white.

Also, football is not a "pastime."  That's that nineteenth-century pastoral game played in a park, where you wear a cap and the object is to go home! And to be safe! - "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

He'd be easy to spot... On injured reserve, sitting on bench... wearing neck brace, crutches or sitting in a wheelchair. I cannot imagine he would not get his ass kicked several times per game. Heck, I imagine his own teammates would let him know how they feel on the practice field and in the clubhouse.

I know most of you already know this, but if cops would stop killing unarmed people of color with impunity, we'd be off to a really good start.

I'd like to see a Venn diagram between the people from TFA and those who burned Dixie Chicks merchandise. How farking fragile can you be? I hate Clint Eastwood's politics (especially the infamous empty chair bit at the RNC), but I will avidly watch ANYTHING he directs. Eastwood isn't my roommate so I don't have to listen to him biatch all the time, but I do admire his artistry.

And as for the NFL, cheap appeals to women and minorities that they're known for, I'd never stop watching unless they outlaw tackling altogether. They play the Soviet anthem for all I care.

Black guy here. We know it applies to us...in the same way that the Bill of Rights does. Which is to say, in theory.

The song is much simpler (and more beautiful, IMO) than the Star Spangled Banner, which is one of the most famously unsingable popular songs in existence.

Of course it does. Why, unlike most patriotic works from the 1800s, it even has a stanza specifically about Black Americans! Key writes that:

Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave,
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave

TLDR; lol some runaway slaves tried to fight for their freedom by joining the British in attacking their slaveowners but we killed em all lol haha suck it slaves

The story of those slaves that did run off and join with the King is pretty farkin' tragic in it's own right.  After the war the English government was awarding reparations to loyalist landholders who had lost their property when the Americans kicked them out.  Former slaves, having risked life and limb escaping just for the opportunity to risk life and limb working for the British, were told that because they were slaves, and owned nothing, that they were not entitled to reparations as they had lost nothing.

Many ended up in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, having been evacuated there out of New York.  Some ended up in Sierra Leone.  None were provided the opportunity they were promised, and for the most part communities were just happy if they packed up and left.  That is how the Sierra Leone project got started.  Too many poor black people hanging out in London messing the place up.

It is also interesting that is how names like "King" came about.  A lot of former slaves took new names reflecting their hope in the English King.   "British Freedom" was an actual dude.   And guys like Martin Luther King reflected that same lineage.

So as not to direct at anyone in particular:

I find the expression "owned slaves" to be a little bit underwhelming for the crime involved, as if the problem was passive ownership of something vaguely problematic, like owning stock in Nestle or something.

Like, slaveowners "owned slaves" in sort of the same way that Jeffery Epstein "owned slaves": it was an active process of human trafficking, false imprisonment, sexual abuse and forced labour. If you didn't engage in that stuff, the slaves just...walked off the plantation. Slaveowning was an activity that encompassed many abhorrent daily decisions, not a passive property status like owning a house.

Pretty much this.  It's so much easier for chickenshiat conservatives who are tacitly opposed to any word or deed that would reduce inequities caused by centuries of slavery and oppression to biatch about a song as an analogue to all of those things than to oppose the actual cause.  But have no doubt, opposition to the actual cause is the real motivation.  Complaining about the song just seems like a low-risk, plausibly deniable expression of it.

Oh, it does - it even has a whole line dedicated to us:

"No refuge could save the hireling and slave'
From the terror of flight and the gloom of the grave"

Y'all probably don't realize this, but in the War of 1812, the British were freeing any slaves that they came across. It was the largest emancipation action until the Civil War.

Francis Scott Key was a slave owning, slavery promoting scum bag, and the song isn't just an ode to a missed opportunity for Black freedom, but an explicit threat against refugee slaves escaping to British lines.

I find this whole proposed boycott amusing as all hell.   1st playing the damn song isn't going to hurt anyone and it is not replacing out current and official national anthem but they cannot stop be outrages for ten seconds to think or they would realize it.

Secondly all of this assumes there will be an NFL season this year.
