And you better believe I'm as behind Native Americans as I am Black people and everyone else suffering under systemic racism and bigotry.

When I was a young girl, I read a ton of "western" paperback books as my dad and I criss-crossed the country on his final postings as an AF officer. I had a lot of time in the car and this was pre-everything. Anyway, I read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and became enraged (I'm 12 at the time). I devoured everything about Native Americans I could get my hands on, fiction and non, and became very much a supporter of Native American rights and supportive of their grievances. I considered the whole thing to be "very unfair!"

Flash forward a few years, I have a job in the cafeteria of a Base Exchange and one of the older women who worked with me had a tattoo of a blue paw on her hand between her thumb and forefinger. In those days, it was VERY uncommon to see an ordinary person with a tattoo, let alone a woman. So, once when we were alone, I asked her about it.

She became very angry and defensive, and me being 16 and easily upset, I started to tear up and asked her why she was angry with me. I think she saw then that there was exactly zero mean intent in me, so she explained that it was her tribal tattoo. I think she was startled by my gasp of joy and delight! I had met a Native American for the first time! I was very silly and excited and asked her a ton of questions, and I must have been so puppy-ishly endearing that she finally smiled and laughed with me and told me about when she got the tattoo and just like that we were friends, even though she had to be thirty years older at least. She told me that she had never told anyone else at our workplace what the tattoo meant to her, and that made me feel special.

She also told me about a bunch of times she'd been mocked and discriminated against, which made me feel terrible. She let me cry for her.

In the Hungarian revolution of 1956 the citizens were highly patriotic and wanted to wave flags. But the only flags they had were ones that had a communist symbol on them. So they just cut the middle out and waved those around.

You have to understand that much in the way Christopher Columbus was the first person to discover America, white progressives were the first people to discover depression and low self-esteem.  The safety of their sheltered lives has caused them to lash out at the closest thing they have ever had to a threatening adversary, which is the pictures in their history books.

The individuals who comprise this group feel so thoroughly defeated by their comfortable middle- and middle-upper class existence, they have decided they have a better chance of changing their reality by retroactively re-engineering the entirety of society than getting up in the morning to lift weights and eat a steak -- possibly even both at the same time, lifting the steak into their mouth could be the workout, assuming they find a cow large enough.

But instead of paying five dollars for an excellent cut of meat, they will instead spend five dollars, earning the right to post in political discussion threads on Fark before anyone else has the right to do so, and for one entire month, they will discuss current events with other individuals who will die childless and alone, as they ban together to fight the symbols which represent the imagined enemies in their head.

Sounds like a great deal.  I'll take twelve years of this shiat.

Lurk Who's Talking: 1976: Stationed at Naval Base Rota, Spain. Ceremonies for Bicentennial assigned me as sideboy/honor guard, then changed to escort for some of the Spanish Royals being dusted off & trotted out now Franco died as the dictatorship changed over to a monarchy. Mine was the sister of Cristobal Colon XIV (I think, not sure of the number now - looked it up & a London paper wrote XXth, neither know nor care now). They were both introduced with a string of titles that definitely lengthened the ceremonies (in English & Spanish); the most head-cocking being "Hereditary Lord Admiral of the Ocean Seas."

Navy joke: Columbus thought he'd reached China. When he left, he didn't know where he was going, when he got to America's, he didn't know where he was, & when he returned, he didn't know where he'd been. Naturally, he was made an admiral.

The castle in Rota has a sign saying Columbus stayed there the night before his initial voyage. I enjoyed my time in Rota.

Hubby was born in the Azores (Faial); they'd begun being settled about 40 years before, so Prince Henry Navigator had helped supply Columbus with knowledge of what to expect, probably. But, what has always bothered me is how Columbus grabbed up 12-20 Islanders who'd been living their lives (probably more hard than idyllic), clapped them in chains as slaves, brought them back on the return voyage to be trotted around & gawped at. Finally, when the new-slave smell'd worn off, they were sold into oblivion, never to see home or family again. It takes a special kind of assh0le to be a slaver. You can give Columbus titles & shiny late-Medieval pimp-trinkets & codpieces but that's what he was: a slave trader looking for a fresh source of flesh to herd up, corral & sell. What funny is that Columbus wouldn't consider himself an Italian.  A unified Italy didn't happen until the late 1800's, and it can be argued still hasn't culturally happened.  So Italian's love him but as a Genoan he would not have considered the southern Italians that make up so much of American Italians to be his countrymen.

His trips were historical but no reason to celebrate. Take his day off the calendar. In fact, we should never idolize anyone. Very few humans of the billions who have lived deserve a day of honor. Strip them all off the calendar and concentrate on events & ideals worthy of note.

Leap Day only occurs every 4 years. For that reason alone, ever since learing of it as a child, I made it my life's work to have the day off & celebrate it. I don't remember ever failing.

Pulling down statues is like burning crosses in front yards.  They're lawless symbolic actions undertaken by people who hide their identities to avoid accountability while intimidating people they disagree with.

Do you guys get an email every month that features talking points to cut and paste into discussions? Your arguments always sound the same and even use the same language. Just because it happens doesn't mean the conquered people have to like it or accept it. History isn't a boss fight then a "GAME OVER" and credits roll.

I don't think it's enough to help Trump get re-elected. Hes too big of an idiot.

The ugly strains of nouveau racism, class politics, revisionist history, and anti-Americanism that Democrats are whole-heartedly embracing may help the GOP in Congress, though.

I have no love for Columbus or his statue, but liberals are working overtime to toss the baby out with the bathwater these days.

It's been increasingly clear that naming the Catholic Fraternal Order "Knights of Columbus" was the height of irony.  They probably performed more positive and worthwhile deeds in its first week, back in 1882, than their namesake did in his whole miserable life.

They ought to change the name, really.


The statues were ironic as well. Columbus statues were erected by Italian Americans to show people that they mattered. At the time they were subject to racial discrimination.

People have been demanding a more diverse curriculum featuring the breadth of the American experience for decades but people in power didn't want to listen. It's becoming apparent that the only way for people to enact real change is by mob rule. It will be interesting to see if the wealthy elites of America will start listening or if one day the mob is going to have to come for them.

I say we make Puerto Rico a state and give Texas to Mexico, that way we don't have to change the number of stars in the flag. There are ranches in Arizona bigger than Rhode Island.

That protest occurred under the regime of the Hungarian People's Republic. A wholly owned political party controlled by the Soviet Union.

A protest made sense there. But this is the United States of America; a supposed democracy. If people need to resort to rioting, something is seriously broken with democracy. This is almost as, if not as important, as whatever people are rioting/protesting against.


People don't actually need to resort to rioting. A peaceful protest against police brutality was warranted, not a riot.

The purpose of riots is entirely dependent on the situation. The justification in this case has nothing to do with a failure of democracy.  The problem is that democracy is working but a radical group wants something other than democracy.  Democracy always 'works' in that it is government from the will of the people.

They want to make rules for thought, speech, behavior, and ultimately government.  That's why you need anarchy first, so you can declare a failure of democracy. The thought and speech police have been relentlessly promoting anything tied to U.S. history as racist and evil, for the purpose of attacking our democratic institutions.  Then the idea is to propose a radical restructuring of government to eliminate opposition.  Its been tried and it failed in Venezuela.  The lessons there are manifest and clear.

We don't need to try it in the U.S.  But that doesn't stop people like you from spouting ignorant bullshiat in service of the cause.

And the irony, oh the irony.  People in Hungary rioted to overthrow a socialist communist dictatorship, which is the form of government many rioters in the U.S. seem to want.

Its one thing to start a revolution to overthrow a dictatorship or fascist government that espouses communism, but its ridiculous to talk aboit overthrowing a fulky functioning democracy, one of the best systems of govt.

You want to start a revolution to take us back to the political dark ages. At least the French Revolution could make a case against monarchy.  You have no case.  You have nothing.

And you better believe I'm as behind Native Americans as I am Black people and everyone else suffering under systemic racism and bigotry.

When I was a young girl, I read a ton of "western" paperback books as my dad and I criss-crossed the country on his final postings as an AF officer. I had a lot of time in the car and this was pre-everything. Anyway, I read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" and became enraged (I'm 12 at the time). I devoured everything about Native Americans I could get my hands on, fiction and non, and became very much a supporter of Native American rights and supportive of their grievances. I considered the whole thing to be "very unfair!"

Flash forward a few years, I have a job in the cafeteria of a Base Exchange and one of the older women who worked with me had a tattoo of a blue paw on her hand between her thumb and forefinger. In those days, it was VERY uncommon to see an ordinary person with a tattoo, let alone a woman. So, once when we were alone, I asked her about it.

She became very angry and defensive, and me being 16 and easily upset, I started to tear up and asked her why she was angry with me. I think she saw then that there was exactly zero mean intent in me, so she explained that it was her tribal tattoo. I think she was startled by my gasp of joy and delight! I had met a Native American for the first time! I was very silly and excited and asked her a ton of questions, and I must have been so puppy-ishly endearing that she finally smiled and laughed with me and told me about when she got the tattoo and just like that we were friends, even though she had to be thirty years older at least. She told me that she had never told anyone else at our workplace what the tattoo meant to her, and that made me feel special.

She also told me about a bunch of times she'd been mocked and discriminated against, which made me feel terrible. She let me cry for her.

If you are going to take the side of the people who have lost lands, life, and freedoms from another people, cry for the entire human race as invasions are a universal ideal and not something invented by the white man.  Ask the Irish and Scots about that and you cannot deny they are white, the original Britons invaded by the norse and romans, tribes of peoples wiped out and succeeded by another in the middle east...it goes on throughout history and will continue to go on as long as someone has what someone else wants.  Even the native Americans took their land from weaker tribes.  The plight of the African slaves are different because they were not conquered by the white man for the most part, they were mostly sold by other African tribes who did the conquering to have slaves to trade.  Does that place less guilt on the white men of the past for having to do less work for more profit, no, but it illustrates that conquering is a human trait, not white one.


This is pure heresy because it denies the central role that identity politics plays in our history.

Columbus was fired from his governorship of the West Indies by Spain... in 1500.  The country that was running the Spanish Inquisition.  Let that sink in.

He never set foot in Baltimore.  He never set foot on American soil outside of Puerto Rico.  The statues to him are more about Italian pride, from an era before Italians were seen as "fully" white.  That's why overwhelmingly, they're in areas with a large Italian-American population. 

Columbus is irrelevant.

Pelosi grew up a two minute walk from the site of the (former) statue. Lots of people she knows well contributed to erecting it including her late brother, former mayor of Baltimore, "Little" Tommy D'Alesandro whose own political career was torpedoed when Baltimore was torched in 1968.

In the Hungarian revolution of 1956 the citizens were highly patriotic and wanted to wave flags. But the only flags they had were ones that had a communist symbol on them. So they just cut the middle out and waved those around.

Nothing like this has happened to our flag yet, but it would not surprise me one bit if some group decides to copy what these folks did in '56 and cut out a big hole in the middle and wave that flag around.

I say we make Puerto Rico a state and give Texas to Mexico, that way we don't have to change the number of stars in the flag. We could take one of the stripes off and make Rhode Island a county in Connecticut, because come on, it shouldn't even be a state. And it definitely shouldn't have 2 senators. There are ranches in Arizona bigger than Rhode Island.


Give Puerto Rico to Mexico and keep Texas.

Why do you care? It's just a statue.

Do you also wonder why people are concerned about burning crosses in front yards? "Why do you care? It's just free wood ash."


So you get it, we should tear down racist statues. Or are you for burning crosses?

Hell, I thought celebrating Christopher Columbus was bogus even back in third grade.

Had watched an episode of "In Search of" and then maybe a month later our history teacher, Sister Mary Ann, was teaching us that Christopher Columbus "discovered" America.  Up went my hand.... oooh, oooh, call on me Sister! I want to tell you that I learned from Spock that the Vikings were there before Columbus, and before that the Indians.  But nooooo..... she saw me with my hand raised but totally ignored me and continued with her lesson.  I had my hand up I'm sure a good five minutes before I gave up.

Yet another mob action determining what people can see.

No public debate. No legislation. No lawful action.

It's not about whether or not the statue is controversial, it's about a violent mob, a feckless mayor and the absence of the rule of law.

I'm personally surprised that US flags are still allowed to be flown in public spaces.


Increasingly, it's not allowed.

Keep it up.  They can always make new statues of Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Columbus.


As if Trump was going to leave the white house, anyway.
