If trump has taught me anything, it's that we must kill this guy and destroy his work, because if we don't see it happening, we won't be sad about all the people dying.

But African descent in Europe and Americas had higher cases and mortality despite not having interbred with Neanderthal?

Given the sexual abuse that slaves were subjected to and the resulting offspring, combined with racist policies like the one-drop rule, black people in the United States whose family lineage on this continent goes back more than a couple of generatons very likely have some European ancestors.  They're not simply African, their genetic background is much more diverse than that.  As such there's a reasonable expectation of Neandertal DNA to varying degrees among the black population.

I do not know enough about the descendants of migrants from sub-saharan Africa to Europe to know if black Europeans have equivalent diversity or not.

Yeah, that was a dumb comment. But the other ones were good, I thought. Short version: highly speculative study, and it fits the rule about academics who have an insight--they've got this hammer, and everything is a nail.

I'm totally guilty of that.

The DNA cluster in question is not the sole reason why people die of COVID-19 but rather it significantly increases risk.    Even blacks who don't have the DNA in question suffer from less money, less access to healthcare, etc. which causes a very significant increase in morality.  And as you said, most blacks in the United States have European ancestry and thus some will have this genetic risk factor.

It's almost as if there may be risk factors other than this one haplotype...

That... would explain the apparent lack of rapid spread in Africa. Interesting.

The Neanderthal ancestors in African populations could be a time related issue.  Neandertal  genetic might have been before or after the great genetic bottlenecks.

When I was looking at data about Malaria drug side effects, the regions were clearly places where it was common, places were it was non-existant and places along the old silk road. The cheapest drugs would often be safe for some groups and deadly for others.

It amazes me that people are so deranged, so invested in hating Trump, that the give the real villain, the People's Republic of China, a pass.

It is in fact so bad, that you can't even connect the word "Wuhan" with the word "virus", it's common name before the PRC decided to complain about it, without it being filtered on Fark to COVID-19 like it's the N-word or something.

Maybe I will start calling it the Attractive and Successful Peoples Republic of China Virus.

Your act is old. The Rona is old. Since California numbers are riding, it's suddenly no big deal. But the South, geeze, those guys suck. Hypocritical libs...your latest OMG is fading.

A man is sitting in his living room and sees his cat knock over a candle and start a fire. He could stomp it out, pour water on it, get the fire extinguisher, but he doesn't. When the whole living room is  ablaze, he doesn't tell his family to get out of the house or call the fire department. When his whole house has burned to the ground and his family is dead, his neighbors come over and ask why he didn't do anything ? He replies: "The cat started it."
