(CNN)   Neil Young upset that Trump used his song "Rockin' In The Free World" at his 4th of July rally. But then again, a mildly anti-American song does seem fitting for a Trump rally   (cnn.com) divider line

Did they actually use "Born in the USA?" Because I have suggested that to other people who want to protest the USA on national holidays, because no one pays attention to the lyrics.

In the same vein, "Cruel Summer" is not a happy song, even though the tune is upbeat.

It's irritating how the common practice for political rallies is to use a song without a license until issued a C&D, as if their pulling a Steve Urkle  - "Did I do thaaat?"

That Trump and his re-election campaign would do it is no surprise, and should those entities be fined, look for that fine to never be paid.

Equally galling to pump people up with merely the chorus, ignoring the actual substance of the song.  But that's the way it goes.

With all the songs that were playing on the PBS stream I'm surprised they didn't play Eye of the Tiger when trump was coming on stage.

I think that both Springsteen and Young, as well as other artists, have figured out a long time ago that squares don't understand lyrics at all and you can troll them into playing your music in exactly this sort of way.

I can understand Trump, and a large portion of his supporters not actually listening to/reading/understanding the lyrics, but surely, someone somewhere in the planning of these things was cognizant of just how awkward this song selection is? Or are they basically being rickrolled by their sound engineers?

I have always wondered about this. In the US, published music is available to use with a compulsory license from the relevant Performing Rights Organization (PRO). Typically, you don't need artist permission if you pay the relevant PRO for a compulsory blanket license to use published music in the US for live events. Outside of yammering about it in the press, I am not sure the artist can do anything about it.  I don't know that a case like this has ever went to court.

It's irritating how common the practice for musicians to complain about using their songs since the USA has a compulsory license for public performances.  All trump has to do is pay a royalty.  Now whether Trump every pays the royalty is a different issue.

I think we were talking about the same thing.  In this case, it often comes off as one of those "better to ask for forgiveness than permission" things.

Trump doesn't, and possibly can't, read.

That said, the idea of Trump's candidacy in 2016 was the classic "he's not a politician, he's an independent beltway outsider" schtick, so the implications of rebellion / taking down the old system were likely intentional on the part of the rally organizers.  And I don't think he actually has any staff left that's not in prison for the 2020 campaign, so they're just using 2016 plans recycled mostly.

// In fairness to Trump, the 'outsider' thing was more true for him than it was for W, at least.
