That's just the excuse. The reason is that life is way more fun when you are single and support yourself.

Does Japanese culture offer a lot of opportunities for women to support themselves?

It could be made out to be more than it actually is, but I was under the impression that the "office lady" caricature was largely true: pink collar workers doing jobs with little opportunity for promotion, with the tacit expectation that they leave employment when they get married.

There are a lot of career opportunities for women in Japan. Problem is those careers expect the same level of universal commitment of all of your time just like for men.  Women who care about their careers don't want to be "failures" at work and "failures" at home too. Same dynamic at play for professional women in the US too, but the culture in Japan turns it up 500%

Maybe, but if you don't get married, you don't lose your job, and if you don't have kids, you have time to run your own side business.

Given the nature of the husband/wife relationship in Japan, they're only using this as an excuse to get out of a life of thankless servitude.

Pretty sure MGTOW is still a thing. Along with incels and redpill folk. I argue it's just the result of the cost of living vastly outpacing the increase of income.

After my brother returned home from living in Japan for years, he told me that in the 'old timey' conservative Japanese families the wife would still kneel down and bow all the way to the floor when her husband came home.

Because their future moms-in-law still rule the roost in the traditional families, especially if you marry the oldest son.

Two different things.  Yes, the corporate office culture is still more-or-less like that. But, if you're not having family/kids, 'support yourself' is a totally different question.  You can certainly check groceries, waitress, be a pachinko attendant, or whatever for life.  And, with better degrees, be a school teacher, nurse, etc, etc. The 'office life' isn't some universal norm or even altogether typical.

It's a different sort of penurious than being a service-economy-nobody in the US.  Society isn't going to let you starve in old age. Health insurance, same thing.  Rent is affordable (even Tokyo, if by 'Tokyo' you can accept about 90 minutes of train and walking to get home), but we're probably talking a 200 sq ft studio... smaller than most US hotel rooms.  You don't need a car (huge expense for most Americans in similar straits).  So, yeah, you can support yourself.

The US is not so different.  Lots of people delay marriage and childbearing because they are waiting to have the resources to "do it right".    The cost of living, near universal expectation of college, expensive childcare and lack of good paying entry level jobs doesn't help either.

Probably not, things may have changed but last I understood it a woman could be a mother or a career woman. Dating would send a signal to the company that the woman was not serious about her career.

Not to mention the whole, being in the office from 6am to 8pm and then drinking with the boss till midnight after work doesn't leave a while lot of time for other things. The Japanese government has had a lot of trouble enforcing the 40 hour work week.

Women, whether they work or not still do the majority of the home chores, they still do most of the child-rearing/raising/activities.
Even when the child had to stay home, the expectation is that the mother will.
Feel free to look that up.
"Modern" families have lost the concept of division of labor and have ended up worse for it.
It's unfair to the women, and many a time the kids get the short end of the stick in terms of attention/development.

In the past, a woman got a job in an office so she could meet someone and get married.  Then she quit her job to have babies and take care of the house.  Modern Japanese women aren't going along with this stupidity.  They want a career, too.  Good for them.

Japan is farked. Their culture, xenophobia and birth and death statistics is leading their population and economy to a future of unsustainable existence. They are literally running out of people and the increasing number of elderly is already straining their economy.
