As far as the beach hysteria: No outbreaks have yet been traced to outdoor transmission:

There have been 26 community outbreaks of coronavirus in the county, which is when tracers find three or more positive cases from different households are linked to a common setting. Nearly a quarter of all outbreaks were at restaurants and bars, the latter were ordered to close starting Wednesday. Restaurants that serve alcohol are also restricted and must close by 10 p.m., according to the latest public health order updates.

Private gatherings inside homes were the second most common source of community outbreaks, followed by retail settings and businesses.

All outbreaks occurred indoors, which is why the county does not plan to close beaches.

"Despite calls from some to close the beaches, we do not feel the public health data supports that action," explained Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.

You realize all those visitors don't camp out on the beach, right?  The crowd hotels, bars, restaurants, In-N-Out (which doesn't count as food), public bathrooms, stores, etc. Closing the beaches would keep people away.

Oh dear. I noticed that on this map, the color for San Diego already turned one shade darker a couple of days ago.

Now we are gonna be a dark red. Crud.

San Diego isn't dull, exactly, so much as that life there (if you are a fortunate one) can be so pleasant and predictable that it lulls people into a sort of golden healthy numbness that nothing can penetrate.
And if you aren't one of the fortunate ones, you're too busy keeping yourself alive to entertain anybody.

Meanwhile here in Monterey (AKA Mayberry by the Sea) the city fathers in their wisdom have closed all the beaches for the weekend while allowing the tourist areas, attractions, bars, restaurants, and other businesses to remain open. So the place is packed with visitors without the beach space that would at least allow them to spread out a little. 🤷

Yep, we're incredibly dull. Stay away and leave the perfect weather, friendly people, and beautiful city to those of us who live here. And for God's sake, please stop moving here, we're full.

I live in North County, the beaches have not been crowded at all this year. I expect this weekend will be very busy many people come down from LA and we are closer I don't want to say "better" beaches but I prefer them to the rest of SD, except Coronado, that's a great beach

No one I know here in San Diego wanted this to happen. Indeed we wrote letters to the governor, mayor and the county board begging them to consider what was about to happen. Hell, look at the sandiego reddit. No one posting their is happy about the "Zonies" or the invaders from surrounding counties that are closed.
No. The reality of this, is that our elected officials are beholden to big business and that it is the working class who will pay. No matter that we have been working hard to social distance and wear masks, our leadership sided with the tourism industry.
"We're all in this together." Bullshiat. Our elected officials will trade your lives for a few dollars more. It's time for a revolution. It's time for the few wealthy individuals to start losing the things they find valuable

I live on the peninsula and the beaches are closed here as well but there are still fark tons of people visiting. I don't think a lot of people understand that when the beaches and state parks are closed, there are no facilities available.

Not completely sold on the big business says so model. The largest employer in my county is government itself. There are few large industries (over 100 employees) and many mom and pops are permanently gone. Some of the chain locations even have shut down. The ones doing the kicking and screaming are rather small in numbers but tourists that ignore all rules are everywhere.

All while being on the watchlist by the state, those bars and other places maybe forced to close down next week, a little too late.

A lot could go wrong actually.  A missile fired by North Korea intended for Terra Haute, Indiana could accidentally instead head to there.  Or a sharknado could happen.

Bars were already re-closed on Thursday. I've never seen a crowded hotel, and restaurants are already at half capacity, with their bar areas also re-shut down (drinks at tables with food only) as of this week. I don't expect that to be a perfect barrier to transmission, but I think it's enough to slow the spread to manageable levels. With the silent spread of this disease though we won't really know if it's enough for another week.

If this was a normal year we'd be in San Diego now. My husband goes to the ESRI conference there and I come along and work from wherever we're staying. We stay longer than the con and I'm really missing being there as it's dead hot in DFW right now. Stupid virus. No, wait, stupid people, I mean.
