No Federal Mandates For Masks On Planes Or Empty Middle Seats

Why would you put a mask on an empty middle seat?

Marcus Aurelius: No Federal Mandates For Masks On Planes Or Empty Middle Seats

Why would you put a mask on an empty middle seat?

Because it's fark-ugly?

Why would you want the Federal Government to mandate something like this.  The airlines have already required masks and if you don't want to sit in the middle, pick a different seat when you book.

National mask mandate would avert 5 percent GDP loss

5% might not sound like a lot, but consider that the GDP for 2019 was over 21 trillion dollars.

If one airline decides that they don't want to require safe practices, then other airlines may start to lose business to them, leading to those other airlines also abandoning safe practices in order to stay competitive.

If it is federally mandated, then there is no race to the bottom, and at least for this deadly pandemic the thing being mandated is a minor inconvenience.

I know, you are desperate to do anything to blame Dear Leader. Republicans f*cked the Corona response hard. Hopefully it doesn't take your loved ones dying for you to understand this.

This is pretty standard operating procedure for conservatives anymore. They won't take responsibility for anything, so they just "suggest" people do the right thing but don't mandate it, that way, no matter what happens they can try to pretend it's not their fault.

Most thirteen year olds are more responsible than your average adult republican at this point.

Look, everyone. We're not going to mandate speed limits. That would be too much government. So if you could please just drive safely, it would be much appreciated. K? Thx.

What business is it to the government that I just downed an entire gallon of that bargain brand whiskey at CVS before getting behind the wheel?

Because airlines would prefer to make money than to force people to do things. If a passenger comes in without a mask, the airline can either tell the passenger to not board. Passenger throws a hissy fit and airline loses money. Airlines would also prefer that the middle seat be taken so that the seat generates cash. Without a mandate, they can choose to seat people in the middle seat. If people don't like it, they can leave, but they can't get their money back (because there's no mandate to require an empty middle seat).

Bottom line, like almost everything that businesses do that require regulating, money is king. If they can earn an extra buck by screwing over the customer, they would. It behooves the passenger to have an ally who can stop such nonsense. That ally is the government.

To be fair, for white people with enough cash to pay the rare speeding ticket, that's basically how it is. The idea that I would go less than 20 over on the highway is a suggestion at best.

I think it's in one of the Scandinavian countries that your fine for speeding is proportional to your income/wealth (and the speed you exceed the limit). Let's say you make $100,000/year and you went 10 mph over speed limit. Suppose that is $200. If you make $1,000,000/year and went 10 mph over speed limit, then the fine is $2,000 (or maybe more). It's a way to discourage people from just paying out. Because, let's face it, when an accident occurs, people die, and that's worth quite a bit more than the fines, no matter how high.

I'd support that, and, to be clear, I actually drive pretty carefully. I didn't always, so I know how weak enforcement is.

Also, those fines are the definition of payable. You could drive pretty farking crazy and be able to afford those at the rate you'd get pulled over.

How does the airline lose money in that scenario?  He already paid for the ticket, then he chose not to board.  If nothing else, they'll save a few bucks on fuel.
