NPR just broadcast Frederick Douglas' speech "What is the 4th of July to a Slave? read by his descendants. I think I'm celebrating Juneteenth from now on instead of the 4th (not there was much to do this year anyway). We should celebrate the day that ALL Americans became free (insert all necessary caveats for obvious injustice since 1865), not just those who were pissed about their taxes.

Maybe not, but why do they feel qualified to have an opinion? "I don't know what you're talking about, but you're wrong and I have a right to my opinion" seems to be their mantra.

Ignorance is simply not knowing something. No shame in that.

Stupidity is willfully being ignorant and persisting in it when shown. Lots of scorn should be heaped on those people.

Much less the ones that were pissed that Westminster saw fit to allow French Canadians to keep their homes and their faith and wouldn't let some hired guns drive them into the Atlantic and help themselves to free farmland.

White Americans have never opposed getting something for nothing. They only had a problem with other people getting to keep the fruits of their own labour.

Four years ago I was in Europe on your with the Canadian punk band DOA. I'm the only American on the tour.
July first is Canada day, so I gotta hear about how the canucks burned the White House in 1813 for three days. On the fourth we're in London.
I make the Canadians read the Declaration of Independence, and they're shocked at the level of eloquence of the language; Joe Keithley says to me, " WOW! It's a legal document, isn't it? We're not taught this stuff ."
I laugh it off. Then we get to the gig, and the opening act is a Billy Bragg knock off act. I can't remember their name but every other song started with "... and this is another song about how the Americans are farking up the world!"
After about the third time this happens everybody in the venue turns around and looks at me and laughs.
I finally shouted out, " put a farker on the moon THEN pop off!!!"
The crowd went wild. I got do much free booze that the band gave me the night off.

They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States;

that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved;

and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.

Listened to that driving from DC back to Richmond. It was 7pm on a Friday and there was no traffic. I'm not sure what that all means, but that reading was amazing!
