The squirrel wouldn't be blind if it'd refrained from spending years thinking of mushroom clouds over Tehran and masturbating furiously.

Wow. Just watched some of the video. I don't think the USA should even consider DC statehood, but that guy is 20 lbs of shiat in a 10 lb sack.

/are we sure this guy is a US Senator and not the laziest Model UN dork on the local high school debate team?

Greetings from Bremen, a city in Germany AND a federal state of Germany.

Actually, I'm working in Hamburg. Which also happens to be a city AND state. And don't get me started about Berlin...

I'm pretty sure that he doesn't care if anyone other than his financial and political backers have rights.

Our enemies don't give a shiat what color we are.  They're just fortunately so stupid they can't recognize all their enemies unless they're color coded. Unfortunately not all of their enemies are either allied together or brave/bold. The further down the slope we all slide towards nothing to lose though...

Assuming a substantial federal district no longer serves a worthwhile purpose, I see no reason to create a new absurdly tiny state when the only real problem with the current situation would be fully addressed by retrocession to MD.

Hey! Once she went to AZ, she became theirs.

Don't wish destruction on my little state because of our ex-pats (or ex-Pats), please.

Plus, we're one of the few states not drowning in COVID right now. We get some things right.

Oh, and Tom Cotton can FOAD. Idiot.

The movement to make D.C. a state by Congressional vote is a losing issue for Democrats because it's better for rallying opposition against them than gaining support.  It will neve happen without ratification by 38 states.

So..what you are really arguing is to get rid of those other absurdly tiny states.

IIRC DC was carved out of Vriginia. My memory is foggy and I'm too lazy for the googles. If anyone wants to provide any meaningful insight, I recommend the engineer's approach.

Namely find out why it was done the way it was done, and then see what is what and what is no longer what. Failure to do so will inevitably lead to disastrous results.

/ There needs to be a way that the city exists while getting proper attention / representation; is not forgotten and remembered only for being a flophouse for power plays and parties.

Fun fact: DC used to be a square 10 miles on a side.  It included a chunk of Virginia, too.  In 1846, Congress voted to give that chunk back to Virginia.  It didn't require a Constitutional amendment.

All that to say, the boundaries of DC aren't fixed in the Constitution.  Congress -- if it so decides -- can re-define the boundaries.  That's the clever part of the bill the House just passed.  It carves out a portion to remain DC proper, and makes the remainder into a new state.

(And Congress can vote to admit new states without an amendment, either.)

Denial, especially in the area around 1600 Pennsylvania Ave

HawgWild: Then what state is it in?

It's not. The Federal capital is not allowed to be owned/possessed by any State it must be exclusively under Federal control. To put D.C. in a State they need to carve out all of the federal buildings/property from D.C. and make the non-federal property a State.

It's ridiculous.

Yeah that fun mistake isn't going to help this movement.
Besides, that didn't abolish the district, only changed its borders.

This movement has zero chance - it's just a political ploy for Democrats to gain an outsized amount of political power and still keep all the benefits of proximity to the center of government.  We don't need another tiny blue state with fringe Senators.  We've got several already.

Why not make most of D.C. part of Maryland and gain legitimate representation?  That will still require states to approve it, but is at least achievable.  Oh wait - I know why!! Because Maryland is a blue state, so adding a district or two to Maryland won't enable one of our political parties to illegitimately gather more political power to itself.

They don't have to carve out all of the federal property - the federal government can own land and base major departments within states, and there's already plenty in MD and VA.

Which all have Congressional representation! That is whole point. Residents of DC pay taxes but have no representation. Which kind of reminds me of something from 1776.
