Well, DC has Snyder in a barrel.

You see, ol' Dan desperately wants the site of the old RFK Stadium so he can tear that down and build his new $1 Billion+ palace

The problem? DC has said, "You want the site, change the name."

Took long enough, but it's nice to see the corporate world actually willing to speak with their dollars in situations like this.

I'm happy and surprised by this. With Schneider at the helm, I honestly didn't think it was going to happen for another 30 years.  a traditionally conservative company like FedEx speaking with their wallet is huge.

The CEO of FedEx  also owns a small part of the Washington football team. I bet that gives him a bit more leverage with Danny boy rather than just being a sponsor.

I don't know of any other reason why he should be such a stalwart defender of that stupid name, and I think he only resists because he's a rich asshole who can't stand to look as if he made a decision because people told him to,

Also, I think there's an example (locally even) that demonstrates how simple it is.  I think, at this point, most people don't even remember when the Washington Wizards were the Bullets.  And the people who know, don't care.  Sure, the team lacks support, but not because of their name change.  It's because they've been mismanaged for decades by a raging asshole.  Come to think of it, maybe Dan likes having the argument about the team name as a distraction from his other shortcomings

Sadly, that's a double edged sword... it's not cash wholly out of Snyder's pocket.  All the merchandising revenue goes through NFL Business Ventures, which is owned equally by the 32 teams.  The impact on Snyder is near nothing financially, but it makes his 31 partners in NFLBV look bad... and they don't like being made to look bad.

Well there were not a lot of options back when the name change for the wizards was announced, pretty sure it a was a fixed contest. I think it was being run by Dominos, you order a pizza and you get a card with the potential team names, IIRC it was Wizards, Express, Seadogs and 1 or 2 other lame names. But at this point change the farking name Dan, you already ruined the team.

FedEx can fark right off. It's not like new information has become available, they signed the contract and theoretically profited from it for a very long time. If they finally don't like it, they should buy out the rest of the deal and have their name taken off of it.

And then the Redskins should change their name. Maybe to the Lobbyists. Most people hate them and people's values can be abruptly changed for cash in Washington, so it'd be a nice fit.

I stopped watching the Bullets/Wizards because of the name change. It happened when I was a teenager and was really getting into sports, and I loved the Bullets name, the Bullets logo (with the two L's going for the jump ball) and the Bullets uniform. I didn't like that they were changing their name, but hey, nothing I can do about change.

But then they changed their name to the dumbest thing possible. The wizards? What a terrible farking name. And the logo sucked. And the uniforms were ugly as hell (its better now that they went to old color scheme).

I've been a Redskins fan my whole life, but I am perfectly fine with a name change. It's long overdue. I just don't have any faith that they won't fark it up like the did with the Bullets. Warriors is as bad a name as Wizards. I don't think Redtails is a good name for any sports team. Just call them the Washington Football club. Keep the colors. Reword the fight song. There isn't a name change that is going to satisfy the fans.

I don't know what your baseless accusation is all about. If you run a company you can go ahead and change your corporate policies all you want, but demanding a corporate partner change its entire branding strategy is just bullshiat posturing. A deal's a deal. If you want to boost your corporate image, let your customers know you put your money where your mouth is and paid good money to end an affiliation early. You don't have to imply it might no longer be as profitable as it was for decades, you can even brand it as taking the moral high road, but cut your ties and move on.

Honestly I don't give half a shiat about the Redskins. Change the name, don't change the name, call them something ridiculous that can't be pluralized, whatever, at the end of the day it's just a bunch of young guys banging heads so other people can make huge sums of money.

Snyder is sitting on a GOLDMINE. If he changed the team name, think of all the fans buying the new merch.

[slightly relevant tangent]

Owners like him, Dolan (Knicks), and Jerruh are bad for sports. They think *they* are the story and all they do is meddle with potential success.

The league should step in and force a sale because Snyder continually fields a non-competitive team*. Dolan hasn't fielded a worthy team since dumping Ewing in 2000.

Same as Marge Schott and George Streinbrenner in the years between Misters October and November.

I'm sure the Browns and Lions wouldn't mind a competent ownership group.

If the owners think they're playing too, they should face the same risks for poor performance. If not taking their franchise away, make them pay for the postseason.

[/slightly relevant tangent]

Snyder still hasn't provided anything close to a valid reason to keep the team name, and he continually fails to read the room. In the larger context, real and fake billionaires seem to be quite out of touch with the vox populi.

On the lighter side, maybe owners should start naming teams with aspersions against white people. The Karens, Flatasses, Great White Fragiles, Inbred Hillbillies, Slowpokes, Insider Traders, Ponzi Schemers, Frivolous Lawsuits, Creepy Neighbors, Fratboy Chads, Lowjumpers, Bribers, Complainers, Participation Trophies, Tax Evaders, Embezzlers, Pretenders, Michael Boltons, Brunch Bunch, Serial Killers, Chickenhawks, Cheaters, Fortune Stealers, Bribers, Nepotism, and the Patriots.

* As a Giants fan, I acknowledge my team's ownership would be in jeopardy as well.

Yesterday on PTI, Tony Kornheiser mentioned that Lil' Danny Snyder quite literally carries a clipping from the Washington Post around with him, of a poll the Post did that showed something like 90% of Redskins fans polled wanted to keep the name.  So it's a real pride thing for him now, a "You won't tell me what to do!" kind of thing.

But even Lil' Danny must know that name is just untenable now.  No corporation wants to put money behind it.

The damn caps are ALREADY made sitting in a warehouse waiting to be shipped (checks e-mail, yep tracking number). You want the NFL to ship off those hats to El Salvador, Haiti, Armenia or Africa like they do for the loosing NFL Superb Owl jerseys/hats?

P.S. Really not a bigot

I believe the NFL teams have a revenue sharing agreement regarding branded merch so this wouldn't hurt them at all.

Anyone suggesting "Warriors" as an alternative might want to check with Marquette.

Naido: I think, at this point, most people don't even remember when the Washington Wizards were the Bullets.

This is a team so forgettable that virtually every casual basketball fan has long forgotten that Michael Jordan played there. If they went from the Bullets to the Wizards to just not existing I don't think anyone would notice.

That one feels like a serious shot fired. FedEx is big, but Nike's committed.

I'd be more than happy to seem them change the name from Redskins to Asian Slave Laborers.

OTOH: Wizards is a stupid name and everyone mocks your team for being even more late to the game than the stupid Magic name.

I actually like the Bullets name (and stage logo, and some of the uniforms), but I don't have any emotional attachment.  Almost every sports teams's name is stupid, it's just that most of them have been around so long that we don't really think about it.

Riothamus: UNC_Samurai: Call them the Warriors, keep the spear helmet.

The badass spear helmet is the most infuriating thing about this whole debacle. What kind of stupid asshole thinks this [Fark user image 474x474] looks better than this [Fark user image 850x850]?

I have no love for Washington but I can admit the spear helmet is the best helmet in American football. Dan Snyder thinks the worst farking logo in the NFL is somehow better.

That spear/arrow would look great worked into the FedEx logo

Plus the whole Gilbert Arenas thing would have been soooo much better if the team had still been the Bullets.

Let's see... We have the Wizards, Capitals, and Nationals. We could go along with the latter two and be the Washington Monuments or something. Or we could embrace the former and go with "Warriors." Then we just need to convice the Capitals and Nationals to change to Rogues and Druids and complete Nerd City.

...But I've actually always liked how some cities, like Pittsburgh, have a common color scheme for all their major teams. It's a unifying factor, y'know? Don't see why every DC team can't be something red-white-and-blue. Either Monuments or Warriors could work for that.

So yeah. If we're considering non-Karen, non-potato options, there's my 2 cents. (If FedEx really wants to improve things, though, maybe they'd also like to invest money in improving the crappy-ass stadium named after them that nobody likes and everyone wants torn down.)

Can't use Monuments. How would it look if "The New York Giants knocked down the Monuments on Monday Night." D.C. residents would be up in arms.

Because I didn't want to put up a wall of text. Same reason I cropped this quote. We all read it once, no reason to read the whole thing again. At the same time, I wanted people to know what I was talking about.

I'm good with that. Also, any NCAA athletics program that does business with Nike shall adopt the "Asian Slave Laborers" mascot.

/delicious

Sadly, that's a double edged sword... it's not cash wholly out of Snyder's pocket.  All the merchandising revenue goes through NFL Business Ventures, which is owned equally by the 32 teams.  The impact on Snyder is near nothing financially, but it makes his 31 partners in NFLBV look bad... and they don't like being made to look bad.

That is not entirely true.
Jerry Jone was the first to sell merchandise and not share 100% with the league.
I doubt Snyder has half the marketing skill of Jones, so it is possible that it does not impact him, but it should.
