Because people were only going to tolerate a shutdown for so long.

Coronavirus liked this post.

Doesn't matter.  Most states squandered their lockdown by doing it too early, or being overbearing in how they implemented it.

Bullshiat. States SHOULD have locked down the moment a case was noticed in their state, and the lockdowns should have been much more strict. And at the Federal level, every American should have been paid to stay home since at least March at the latest, with extra hazard pay to essential workers, just for starters.

America half-assed (if I'm being generous) the response to the worst pandemic in a century because we have an ignorant, greasy orange shiatstain in the Oval Office who thought taking basic precautions or preparing for shiat would make him look weak, and because our government is controlled by a party of sociopaths who'd throw us all into meat grinders if Wall Street could make money from it.

I like how the states with the highest death and infection rates still manage to get a pass in favor of scapegoating the other states that are at mere fractions of those rates.

Blue states were first and got rocked because of highest population density.

The red states had something that blue states did not......more time. More time to prepare, more time to get PPE, more time to be on top of it. It was bad how much we squandered as a nation, but the red states were even dumber for wasting more valuable time, when they had a lens into what was going to happen.

And they did even less.

The problem, as has been explained so many f'king times here, is leadership. Had the US gone after the virus as ONE COUNTRY, we would likely not be seeing what we are seeing now. Went from what should have been a national effort to "Handle it states", which became "Handle it counties", which became "Handle it cities and towns", and is now "F'k everybody you're on your own".

We are playing f'king whack a mole with this virus, and it could have been made much more brief if EVERYTHING had been shut down within a month of the first diagnosed case back on January 20th, at least by the end of February. As it was there were a bajillion kinda sorta half-assed shutdowns which didn't work simply because when one place was shut down and one wasn't the assholes that were gonna do what they were gonna do would just go to the place that didn't shut down and spread their contagion there. Squeeze one end and the toothpaste spews out the other.

So long as idiot politicians and non-compliant assholes keep this up the virus will happily f'k with this country. No leadership is why and at all levels.
To effectively deal with this shat everyone in every city and every town in every state in the entire country must act as if there is one country, not 50. If they don't it's going to be a long time before this game is finished.

Also, they will ignore that all the businesses that were "allowed" to be open weren't making any f$cking money anyways so the probably should have helped they financially to keep their businesses closed.  In they end they will have paid a ransom of lives and will have been no further ahead when it comes to the economy.

The science is already in on this.

Those experts had a different view on the reopen protests, as well as people visiting beaches, lakes, and parks.

It's almost like people protesting against masks and closures are a risk while people wearing masks and protesting against something unrelated aren't doing too bad.

Who would have thought that anti-safety idiots would turn out worse?  It's a real head-scratcher.

I really think, in a way, New York got "lucky". By that I mean all us people outside the city. The city exploded so fast and so badly, they locked down the state before it got really bad upstate. We benefited in being shut down at a time when, in hindsight, they should have shut down the city weeks before.

So for example, even in Albany, not THAT far from the metro area, virus infection rate in the general population only ever got to about 2% (compared to antibody sampling indicating NYC is more like 20%). Since then, it does appear that in general we are just better at maintaining distance and wearing masks in public.

Outside of Walmart, I mean. Fark that place and fark all those people.

The thing with this pandemic is that it is a pandemic.

We can compare outcomes against how countries have chosen to deal with it.

So, we can see that countries that went the herd immunity route, like Sweden, have had far more deaths than its Scandinavian neighbours, but also similar contraction in its economy.

The US is an entirely different kind of wildcard, altogether, though, since at least most countries have someone in charge of the executive branch of government who at least cares somewhat about what happens to the residents of that nation.

But Trump doesn't take responsibility and still imagines that something magical will happen and the virus will disappear.

Achievement unlocked: Kill all the grandmas

Achievement unlocked: Herd immunity

The thing with this pandemic is that it is a pandemic.

We can compare outcomes against how countries have chosen to deal with it.

So, we can see that countries that went the herd immunity route, like Sweden, have had far more deaths than its Scandinavian neighbours, but also similar contraction in its economy.

The US is an entirely different kind of wildcard, altogether, though, since at least most countries have someone in charge of the executive branch of government who at least cares somewhat about what happens to the residents of that nation.

But Trump doesn't take responsibility and still imagines that something magical will happen and the virus will disappear.

/Hillary would have been worse, right?

I'd bet the maskless hoards "listening to Trump" would behave in the same way while "not listening to Hillary."

I don't think so, personally.

Hillary would have taken responsibility. She would not have tried to undermine state governments that were trying to limit the spread of the virus.

Perhaps, in the end, there is some misguided logic around ripping off the band-aid, as opposed to bleeding slowly into flu season.

Again, the great thing about the internet is that it's easy to compare data from different nations easily. And we can all see how countries that did nothing are faring as well, economically, as countries that tried to limit the spread of COVID, except they have far more deaths to deal with.

That's nonsense right there.  No need to read any further.

We kinda know this because it's been proven the majority of the new cases after lockdown came from people sheltering at home there.  You can't avoid it in a densely packed place like NY, with high rise living, but the positive rate is down to almost where we started....  A lot of what we are seeing is really testing bias, we're seeing what was underneath the tip of the iceberg (serious cases) now.  I know tons of people who have gotten tested in the past two or three weeks and I can't figure out why they got tested.  I guess people are just getting tested for the comfort of it, rather than because they are critically ill.

It's going to be a long time any which way it goes.  The only thing some states are trying to so is make the ride a little less rough.  It was never going to be a quick fix.  The vaccines that are currently being worked on, the furthest along are only in phase II testing.  None have reached the point of large scale production tests and effectiveness.  And some are only resulting in a lowering of the severity of the illness, not actual protection against it.

This is going to be a years long problem, if not decades, before there's an actual "resolution".  If we can even achieve "immunity" - which is still unknown.

At least on a state by state level (the only data I could find that gave a nice graph of tests completed versus positive tests), this may not be accurate. Here is Nevada's positive tests vs. testing volume:

https://rt.live/us/NV

Note that the number of tests completed is, so far, pretty consistent, whereas the number of positive cases has gone up.

Maybe it is different in your state?

Notice something else from that graph of Nevada? The Rt is all the way down to 1.43. This corresponds to only needing 30% of the population to be immune to achieve herd immunity. Looking around at some of the other states, Nevada is actually on the high side, with a lot of the others closer to 1.1. The fact that deaths are asymptotically approaching zero is because we are getting very close to herd immunity. Feel free to compare those numbers to this publication if you think I'm wrong.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7151357/

Yeah we are definitely on the high side, and going up, here. I was more making the point that assessing this on the national scale when what we have is basically dozens of specific outbreaks is probably not the way to go, sadly.

Is there evidence that people are actually gaining immunity to the virus now? That would be news to me, and I would very much appreciate a link if so.

Also, the Rt isn't "all the way down" to its current 1.44. It is back up to that number after people being dumbasses and not masking up or respecting social distancing.

Just-world fallacy: Bad people make choices, and it bites them in the ass. Good people are inherently better suited for everything, and their choices do not lead to bad outcomes.

Going to church is a Good Thing, so they're protected somehow. If you say that there's a random component to anything, they'll stare at you like you're insane or lying. The notion that some things in one's life is dependent on random chance is flat out terrifying to them, because it would mean that the universe is terrifying. That's why they back authoritarians -- they tell them that they're good, and if they follow this or that set of rules, they'll continue to be good. The Others are rapists, murderers, drug dealers, and some, presumably, are good people.

Man, I hope that when I die, enough people want to celebrate my life to dance my coffin to the cemetary...

Depending on where you are and your available resources, you should be able to arrange a Dixieland jazz funeral...

God-is-a-Taco: This is one of the things people should be railing against Facebook for encouraging. Sponsors should be pulling their ads not just for terrorist acts, but for spreading disease and death.

I pretty much only go to Facebook to post stories about the Facebook boycott, and to leave comments on my feed's ads explaining that I no longer buy anything that advertises on Facebook.

Let's have more protests where we crowd together, yell nugatory slogans, and fleck spittle at each other.

Explain why we're opening everything now that everything is worse than when we closed things in the first place. Someone just give me an answer for that, even if it's bullshiat.

No one has an answer.

Someone funnied this, but you're right. Yes, there were evil machinations behind this.  Yes, some very powerful people are making a fortune off this. But this more than farked up. This is what Dante whispered about before he drank himself to sleep. These are evil men doing evil things. These are bad, bad, people.

There can be light. There can be balance.  But it has to come from all of us.  We have to try to save this country.  If enough of us care, including the non-sociopathic rich, we can do it.

Russia has us in its grasp. It literally will take a nation to hold Putin back.

Creating an unprecedented nationwide health emergency to serve as cover for stolen elections is my guess.

All states seemingly "masks are required, unless you have a reason, we cant ask what that reason is, so masks are not required"

Mental health seems to be the only reason people can not wear masks for the short times they are needed i keep hearing

It's a great time to be an ideologue... opening up schools and universities with a fervor and ignoring all evidence that it is going to blow up in people's faces.  So many people hurt... and most of them are brown or darker.  Hot diggity.

Trump is actively trying to kill people because his poll numbers are down.

The COVID positive rates are going up because not enough people drank bleach, or didn't shove UV lights up their collective asses.

And we're still not fully into summer's hottest weeks. By mid-July, the heat should just make COVID disappear, just like Trump's chances of a second term.

Remind me, are we talking about the Branch Dildonians that stormed capital buildings with guns and anger to open shiat up, or the BLM masses that protested with facemasks? Or the 6000 losers in Tulsa that breathed the same air as Trump for 2 hours?

There's plenty of blame to go around, most of it being stupidity. There's stupidity on both sides, only your side is proud of it though.

Experts see little evidence that protests spread the coronavirus in U.S.

Come on.

Parties - Not Protests - Are Causing Spikes In Coronavirus

Plenty more citations where that came from.  Feel free to Google "protests not spreading covid" for more.

Then the criticism of beachgoers was misguided, as that of reopen protesters, people who dared to visit parks, etc.

Were the beachgoers, reopen protesters and the other entitled jackoffs wearing masks and taking other precautions beyond 'being outside'? Because the BLM protests were mostly masked, and pretty much every one had people going around handing out hand sanitizer.

Yes.

proton: I think that part of the problem with the ignorance in this country is you can't see the pandemic.  People walk out their front doors and everything appears normal.  If only there was a way to show people what's going on inside of hospitals.

To be fair, we were hearing this months ago, but also getting a steady stream of idiotic videos of most of the staff dancing around.
