All states seemingly "masks are required, unless you have a reason, we cant ask what that reason is, so masks are not required"

Mental health seems to be the only reason people can not wear masks for the short times they are needed i keep hearing

Achievement unlocked: Herd immunity

The thing with this pandemic is that it is a pandemic.

We can compare outcomes against how countries have chosen to deal with it.

So, we can see that countries that went the herd immunity route, like Sweden, have had far more deaths than its Scandinavian neighbours, but also similar contraction in its economy.

The US is an entirely different kind of wildcard, altogether, though, since at least most countries have someone in charge of the executive branch of government who at least cares somewhat about what happens to the residents of that nation.

But Trump doesn't take responsibility and still imagines that something magical will happen and the virus will disappear.

/Hillary would have been worse, right?

I'd bet the maskless hoards "listening to Trump" would behave in the same way while "not listening to Hillary."

Perhaps, in the end, there is some misguided logic around ripping off the band-aid, as opposed to bleeding slowly into flu season.

The funny thing about those graphs, assuming they're accurate, is PA and MI (possibly among others with D governors) are making the red line look better and CA is making the blue look worse

That is to say, solid red states must be farked right now

It remains to be seen if they will get as bad as many of the blue states.

I don't think so, personally.

Hillary would have taken responsibility. She would not have tried to undermine state governments that were trying to limit the spread of the virus.

Perhaps, in the end, there is some misguided logic around ripping off the band-aid, as opposed to bleeding slowly into flu season.

Again, the great thing about the internet is that it's easy to compare data from different nations easily. And we can all see how countries that did nothing are faring as well, economically, as countries that tried to limit the spread of COVID, except they have far more deaths to deal with.

The problem, as has been explained so many f'king times here, is leadership. Had the US gone after the virus as ONE COUNTRY, we would likely not be seeing what we are seeing now. Went from what should have been a national effort to "Handle it states", which became "Handle it counties", which became "Handle it cities and towns", and is now "F'k everybody you're on your own".

We are playing f'king whack a mole with this virus, and it could have been made much more brief if EVERYTHING had been shut down within a month of the first diagnosed case back on January 20th, at least by the end of February. As it was there were a bajillion kinda sorta half-assed shutdowns which didn't work simply because when one place was shut down and one wasn't the assholes that were gonna do what they were gonna do would just go to the place that didn't shut down and spread their contagion there. Squeeze one end and the toothpaste spews out the other.

So long as idiot politicians and non-compliant assholes keep this up the virus will happily f'k with this country. No leadership is why and at all levels.
To effectively deal with this shat everyone in every city and every town in every state in the entire country must act as if there is one country, not 50. If they don't it's going to be a long time before this game is finished.

rewind2846: it's going to be a long time before this game is finished.

It's going to be a long time any which way it goes.  The only thing some states are trying to so is make the ride a little less rough.  It was never going to be a quick fix.  The vaccines that are currently being worked on, the furthest along are only in phase II testing.  None have reached the point of large scale production tests and effectiveness.  And some are only resulting in a lowering of the severity of the illness, not actual protection against it.

This is going to be a years long problem, if not decades, before there's an actual "resolution".  If we can even achieve "immunity" - which is still unknown.

SHOCKED.

/Well, not that shocked

I like how the states with the highest death and infection rates still manage to get a pass in favor of scapegoating the other states that are at mere fractions of those rates.

Blue states were first and got rocked because of highest population density.

The red states had something that blue states did not......more time. More time to prepare, more time to get PPE, more time to be on top of it. It was bad how much we squandered as a nation, but the red states were even dumber for wasting more valuable time, when they had a lens into what was going to happen.

And they did even less.

They also got prematurely locked down, which meant that any future measures will be fought hard.

Most of the country should not have locked down when and how they just because the Northeast was getting hit.

Oh okay, well, next time we'll wait until the disease is well established and hospitals are on the brink.

Just-world fallacy: Bad people make choices, and it bites them in the ass. Good people are inherently better suited for everything, and their choices do not lead to bad outcomes.

Going to church is a Good Thing, so they're protected somehow. If you say that there's a random component to anything, they'll stare at you like you're insane or lying. The notion that some things in one's life is dependent on random chance is flat out terrifying to them, because it would mean that the universe is terrifying. That's why they back authoritarians -- they tell them that they're good, and if they follow this or that set of rules, they'll continue to be good. The Others are rapists, murderers, drug dealers, and some, presumably, are good people.

I have been trying to bring people back to reality for a while... math and stuff is hard for some people.  They can't see that the number of infections is a bullshiat metric, yet it's the only one they rely on.  Not per capita... nor the rate of hospitalizations or deaths per capita.  Nope.  Or that California isn't really that bad compared to other states, it's actually better than average.

But please, do freak out that young people are mostly the ones getting infected and that the cases are minor, not severe.  Actually, as long as they stay away from those how are at greater risk, it's ideal actually for them to get it, develop immunity and stop acting as potential vectors.  It's what sweden tried, but failed to do because they didn't adequately protect their at risk communities fast enough.  It's what we SHOULD have been preparing for during the lockdown, but we didn't.
