Apparently this isn't the only individual to go *poof* from that base?!?

Serial killer on the base?

I always make a point to kill at least two people at a time... So I'm a parallel killer...

It was the burying himself in a shallow grave that allowed him to elude the MP's for so long.

Steakzilla: dyhchong: "It doesn't make sense that a young man who was just days away from getting an honorable discharge and his military benefits would all of a sudden just disappear without a trace.

Sure it does. I bolded the sense it makes.

So you're saying the Army is conspiring to kill people before they get out and receive benefits?  Or just this one guy?  Even if true there isn't one person specifically benefiting from the money saved so what's the farking point?  God I hope this was a sad attempt at being funny...

We all know that your boss conspiring your potential demise was a potential part of the job when we signed up.

But this is another thing entirely.

So the Army killed him so they wouldn't have to pay his benefits?

It is interesting how little interest the Army has in actually tracking down deserters. Especially when this particular base has had it's share of problems with sexual harassment towards both men and women. And that whole mass shooting thing. But I know for a fact that the Army in general is excellent at tracking people down. Time for a... ISB?

Back in the early 2000's, I knew two people who were tracked down by the Army after not reporting for basic after enlisting. I live in South Dakota. The first one, I knew personally. He enlisted before the end of high-school, he got cold feet a day or two before he was supposed to report, and headed off to California to stay with a woman he met on the internet. Well, without any known address, or any bills in his name, as far as I know, the Army tracked him down within two months. Threatened to charge him with going AWOL if he didn't report, so he did.

The second, was a guy I met several times, but he was a friend of a friend, never really cared for him. He enlisted, got cold feet, and came from California to South Dakota to hide. Ended up staying in my friend's girlfriend's aunt's basement. Again, as far as I know, no known address. Army caught up with him a few months later as well.

They can find you, if you're a fresh young body they can turn into an infantryman. They're very, very good at it. If you're on the verge of the end of your service, or if you can offer testimony to expose the gross misconduct in the military, apparently they have no way of tracking you down. It's just so weird how it happens this way.

I'm failing to follow.  They haven't confirmed that he didn't desert, and is still on deserter status and they still expect family to pay for moving the body?

I was more referring to subby's comment that his body was found before his discharge date

Discharge date is a great name for a hookup app for people with gonorrhea...

Are you implying the military murdered him to keep from having to give him his benefits?  I'm pretty sure there are easier ways for them to do that, and also that there would be a whole lot more missing soldiers.

phedex: Sounds pretty clear, from what shes saying theres no way this young man would do that so close to completion.  I guess anything is possible, but it sure looks like something happened to him, not him just deserting.

and if its true, fark these assholes who tried to call him a deserter.

if not, I stand corrected.

Maybe his shallow grave was in the desert.  Ergo he's still a "desert"er.

/if they found him baked into a strudel he would have been a desserter.

MelGoesOnTour: roostercube: Soldiers do crazy things (I was one). It wouldn't be completely outside the realm of possible that a soldier deserts just a couple weeks from being discharged. This guy did nearly 6 years, and was a PV2, so that seems to suggest at least one (maybe multiple) Article 15 cases. Still, it would be rather rare for even a shiatbird to leave at that moment and that should have gotten the attention of a lot of people higher up in the chain of command. I feel for the family right now. The Army could be handling this better.

Yeah, something weird about this. No way can someone be an E2 after 6 years unless he was a royal fark-up to begin with. Heck, I was SP4P in less than three years!

I made Specialist in 3 years and 1 week later was repromoted to PFC!

They don't seem very concerned with who killed one of their soldiers which means they already know.

Welp, what makes sense is the army is not going to remove him from deserter status until his autopsy confirms when he died, duh.

They do have a pattern of that in VA hospitals.

But seriously though, obviously this guy was so desperate to desert that he couldn't even bother digging himself a proper grave.  It all adds up.
