She said she reached out to her casualty officer out of Fort Sill. According to Wedel, she was told they were planning to clear Gregory's name. Then she got a call back that clarified that until the autopsy results came back showing Gregory had been dead for ten months, they were going to put his date of death as last Friday.

So wait for the autopsy results to come before holding the funeral?

Soldiers do crazy things (I was one). It wouldn't be completely outside the realm of possible that a soldier deserts just a couple weeks from being discharged. This guy did nearly 6 years, and was a PV2, so that seems to suggest at least one (maybe multiple) Article 15 cases. Still, it would be rather rare for even a shiatbird to leave at that moment and that should have gotten the attention of a lot of people higher up in the chain of command. I feel for the family right now. The Army could be handling this better.

That is not very reassuring.  If Morales' body has been buried for 10 months, estimating the time is dicey.  OTOH if they turn up something about how he got dead, that might be helpful to the army, his family, and classification as a non-deserter.

It was.

However the body was found and prelim reports say that he died... Right around when he disappeared.

At that point I would immediately reverse the desertion classification.  You kinda have to be alive in order to desert.

You've been missing a lot, it's been pretty big news around the country and those parts, so since it's been on all the news its assuming you knew it, it is also a local news source and everyone knows about this.

A female soldier has been missing for a couple of weeks.  The army wasn't doing much so a senator got involved so they actually started doing search parties for her during one search party they found him in a shallow grave.

Unfortunately it does not end on a happy note as they found more remains not far from his.  As far as I know they havent confirmed if it is her or not.

That sounds like our military all right.

Vanessa Gullien.

[Fark user image 720x832]

Sexually harassed at Fort Hood... which is apparently SO NOTORIOUS for rape on site that female soldiers are told to never walk alone. She disappeared. Her family started pressing.

And Now..

[Fark user image 850x1211]

This is apparently not the first time this has happened. People.. especially female soldiers.. apparently tend to disappear at Fort Hood, BUT, the sexual assault/rape is not contained to women. The men are preyed on as well. It's a cluster. Fort Hood needs to be shut down entirely.

/online scuttlebutt I'm seeing is this might be sex or organ trafficking but, take that with a bottle of salt

It is interesting how little interest the Army has in actually tracking down deserters. Especially when this particular base has had it's share of problems with sexual harassment towards both men and women. And that whole mass shooting thing. But I know for a fact that the Army in general is excellent at tracking people down. Time for a... ISB?

Back in the early 2000's, I knew two people who were tracked down by the Army after not reporting for basic after enlisting. I live in South Dakota. The first one, I knew personally. He enlisted before the end of high-school, he got cold feet a day or two before he was supposed to report, and headed off to California to stay with a woman he met on the internet. Well, without any known address, or any bills in his name, as far as I know, the Army tracked him down within two months. Threatened to charge him with going AWOL if he didn't report, so he did.

The second, was a guy I met several times, but he was a friend of a friend, never really cared for him. He enlisted, got cold feet, and came from California to South Dakota to hide. Ended up staying in my friend's girlfriend's aunt's basement. Again, as far as I know, no known address. Army caught up with him a few months later as well.

They can find you, if you're a fresh young body they can turn into an infantryman. They're very, very good at it. If you're on the verge of the end of your service, or if you can offer testimony to expose the gross misconduct in the military, apparently they have no way of tracking you down. It's just so weird how it happens this way.

MelGoesOnTour: roostercube: Soldiers do crazy things (I was one).

One thing about military thinking, problems are a bad thing.  Higher ranks at Pentagon don't want to hear about problems at bases.  So to fix a problem, one much admit there is a problem to be fixed.  So if they looked into what  is going on, that would be admitting there's a problem, and Pentagon will not be happy, and start replacing CO's.  Basically, it is better for the career to keep a problem hidden till after their time there has passed.

Fort Hood. Killeen, Texas.
Sure, they have both a Whataburger and an In-n-Out, but....
Everyone I've ever met there from residents to soldiers stationed there all seem to have 'issues' coping with reality, and they are amplified on base. I have relatives in that area that I keep myself distanced from because they aren't the usual self-righteous bigoted racists, they are also all talk like Trump with his self-stroking ego trying to make themselves sound like Gods, that tragedy is 'a good thing', and that 'it will go away quickly'.
Then add in everything from the mass shooting in 2009 to the missing soldiers turning up today, the stories of rape and assaults on base there, and you get the impression its like a hellhole to a whole new level. The way I hear it, the ONLY thing good about Hood is "At least it's not Fort Polk, but Polk is still safer."

North of the 49th here, so the goings on of a military base in Texas doesn't usually make my news feeds.

And details like that would have been useful in the article.

I'm in Chicagoland myself.  Its popped up in a bunch of my news feeds, been on most major news sources.

He was getting an honorable, so it doesn't seem like he was being forced out.  Usually people disappear when they're getting a Dishonorable or Other than honorable, because what's the diff at this point?

We had a guy in our unit that did something similar to yours.  He got caught with a a pound of weed in his barracks 3 weeks before he was going to get discharged.  They were going to give him an Other than honorable discharge and just get him tf out of the army....  this idiot farking runs away.  We were stationed in germany at the time.  6 months later he's caught in his German GF's apartment.

So instead of just getting an other than honorable discharge for getting caught with a pound of weed he got sentenced to 1 year labor and 2 in Leavenworth....

All he had to do was wait 3 weeks to get out the first time.  He was 2 weeks out from getting his other than honorable, then farking deserts and gets a year of hard labor and 2 years in leavenworth.

Yes people are dumb, but it doesn't appear the guy in article was that dumb.

What benefits does a pv2 with 6 years in get?

That's right nothing but the gi bill.

Otherwise if he had medical benefits from a disability, those come from VA and the army dngaf about those as they're a completely different org and not tied to their budget.  In fact none of the benefits he'd get come from the Army itself, and even if they did, it's not like they come out of the unit's bank account or anything so the commander wouldn't care if they did.

Also, there's be a lot more dead soldiers than just this guy.  Including me.

This is a stupid conspiracy with no basis in reality as there is no motivation for it because his benefits don't effect the army one way or another.

It's not like the army couldn't purchase more gear because this one guy gets va benefits or something.

I'm failing to follow.  They haven't confirmed that he didn't desert, and is still on deserter status and they still expect family to pay for moving the body?

I was more referring to subby's comment that his body was found before his discharge date

I stand corrected, I am the idiot for not properly reading Subby's farked headline.  My brain autocorrected.

As did mine, until he responded to mine I didn't notice.

Fantastic news. I'll let the guy that the Army tracked down, and who subsequently served two tours in Iraq that the five people he killed, and the burning bodies he had to pull from HMMVS don't matter. Because the army doesn't bother tracking people down. I'm sure he'll be thrilled.
