Hong Kong, as an independent government, is officially over. Anyone who wants to get out, should get out. Now.

Well, Trump wants a favor from Xi so there was never any threat of USA retaliations.

If only there were some island where they could go and perhaps have a government in exile...
Hmmmmm..I wonder where they could do that?

I hope they raid the hidden accounts that communist leaders use to shelter their ill-begotten gains before skipping town. If nothing else at least pull back the privacy curtains so people in China can see how much they are being grifted.

That was my first thought.

The Republic of China would LOVE to welcome Taiwan as their newest province.

. . .and the PRC would be so pissed, and wonderfully so.

Though it might not be wise to be so geographically close and consolidating people that China would love to oppress.

This is like watching a little kid insist on still wearing their footsie pj's even though the sleeves only reach to their elbows and the feet have holes in them. Sure, they can still wear it but it's only a matter of time before mother takes it away. You're part of fuqing China whether you like it or not; it's going to happen.

Hong Kong is gone...nothing short of the collapse of China is going to change that.

well the current gov in exile is moving toward aggresive anti-china / u.s / independence instead of keeping mostly neutral aligned at a pace that's going to end up getting it wompstomped soon if things keep going so i guess this can be alternate gov in exile.

Hope the people of Hong Kong remember history.  Just like the years between WWI and WWII when the Jews tried to hang on thinking it couldn't get worse, Hong Kong should immediately start funnelling their people anywhere and everywhere.  And ship anything not nailed down as well.

If the communist Chinese want to act like locusts, leave nothing for them.

Agreed. The dynamics favor repeated future conflicts, and China has decided that it can live without leeching off of a thriving Hong Kong economy. That means that they will be unflinching in their oppressive reflexes and every person that harbors any interest in freedom becomes a target.

That whole government in exile thing has worked out great for Tibet.

how as it worked for tibet ? they have no power inside Tibet proper anymore and they don't get new refugee's.
Dharamshala is pretty much a dump compared to 2020 Lhasa.

Or like the Russians did with the French and then the Nazis: Burn everything to the ground as they leave and leave mainland China nothing of value.

AuralArgument: NutWrench:

In the 90s and 00s people thought treaties mattered.

Russia attacks Ukraine and the US supports Russia -- Guess that whole give up nukes thing was stupid

US drops out of treaty with Iran -- Iran should never have trusted the US and will probably push for the bomb asap

China fully takes over Hong Kong, nothing from the US and very little from the UK -- They should have protested before the handover

Yes, you are right. However, I don't think we expected such a weak United States and aimless corrupt "free world" when the treaties were signed.

I hate that the world just watches this happen and does nothing.  There are egregious human-rights violations all over the globe and we just wring our hands and write stern letters.
