Trump: Lincoln was a republican and he freed the slaves. Therefore, Democrats are the true racists.

Also Trump: We need to honor people who fought against Lincoln in order to keep slaves. Democrats are the true racists.

Trump focusing his reelection strategy on statutes during our nation's greatest existential crisis in our lifetimes is going to be the greatest "what were you thinking?!" headscratcher in American history.  Future scholars are going to have a ball with Trump.

Nah, it's perfectly understandable.  He is pandering to his base, and they love this shiat.

His campaign is calculating that his fired up base plus full on voter suppression, the bias in the electoral college and foreign influence on social media will be enough to win the election.  He may lose by 10M+ popular votes and squeak through with a few in the EC.

His campaign isn't wrong.

Oh I get the strategy. Count on capturing lightning in a bottle twice, the second time with a smaller bottle.  It could work, but almost certainly won't. If it doesn't, he's headed for the most humiliating electoral defeat in over 40 years.

That would require the Republicans to have some balls. They gave all of theirs to Trump in the name of power.

Only two have managed to get their balls back: Justin Amash took both of his back and Mitt Romney has one of his.

Yes, who could forget that one guy whose subordinates hated him so much they got him promoted to get him the fark out? Or that other one, you know, who lost all those battles? The one who led his men into a disaster of a charge? The one who lost the goddamned war (and said there shouldn't be monuments to the Confederacy)?

// but fair's fair - without those Confederates' contributions, I doubt the Union would have won
// maybe that's what we should add to the statues - a listing of their failures as leaders and officers (to say nothing of their support for slavery and slaveholding), and how they saved the USA

I just looked it up - you're right.

Some fun facts: the first time a presidential veto got overridden wasn't until 1845. LBJ was the last president to leave office without having a veto overridden. The modern record belongs to Gerald Ford, who had a stunning twelve vetoes overridden.

The Democrats should offer a delightfully trollish answer to Republican whining. RENAME the bases to a Confederate general's honor.

General James Longstreet - West Point graduate, brilliant filed commander, led troops at Gettysburg while criticizing Pickett's plans as foolish to the war effort, saw action at Bull Run and the western campaigns. And he was opposed to slavery on a personal level but not as a societal concept.

In the 1870s, he led a state militia to put down a riot by the White League against freed towns in the South. He opposed statues to the losing side, and when asked about the early "Lost Cause" narrative, he said definitively that slavery was the reason for rebellion, because he fought for the rebellion and helped draft the articles.

If the yokels want to honor the fallen brotherhood of states rights, start with him.

Just to spell it out, Democrats could run an ad in every state showing that their senator voted against the president on the issue of renaming army bases while Donnie tried to hold up funding our troops because of a naming thing & use that as a wedge issue to drive down support for BOTH Donnie & whoever their senator is.
