"Get our tourist traps back open!"

The EU says it's not going to allow people from U.S. I think Britain is imposing a 14-day quarantine. A lot of Florida theme park traffic is European tourists. Are they going to have to quarantine if they travel to the U.S. and then return home.

Tourism industry's probably leaning on him hard. Disney is desperate to get DW open again, and the beach towns are probably also crying. Without that sweet tourist $$, FL is in deep doo-doo.

good thing an inept man-baby isn't in the White House spouting crap that caused people to ignore and continue to ignore the advice that would slow and decrease the spread. Saying in January and February, "Hey, this is serious-two weeks of non essential lockdown, four weeks of stimulus benefits, and mask use and social distancing until your area is under requirements." But no, GOP has to look all tough and get their stigginit in so we get not only crap our pants but we also paint our faces and walls with it.

Without the tourist dollars we might end up with a state income tax too, so there's probably a lot of push in that regard also.

Sales taxes make up 78% of Florida's tax revenue. Shows how great not having an income tax is, doesn't it?

The first wave primarily tore up assisted living and retirement homes, leading to a massive death rate. Now it's mostly teens and twenty-somethings, so we're patting ourselves on the back for lowering the death rate.

I wonder if there is a population of people between those two age groups that come into regular contact with the people currently carrying it where maybe, just maybe, being more proactive might be a way to stop the death rate from spiking (even if it never gets as high as it did before)?

Tourism will eventually recover. But it will be a rough time for the state until there's a vaccine and decent antivirals. If the state doesn't take action now, our upcoming fall and winter tourist season will be a disaster.

I literally just got a text from a coworker who took his family to Disney last night in Florida. He must have asked me 50 times whether he should cancel (I said absolutely yes every time) but his family was bored and you can't reason with people - even people you typically really like.

He described the precautions, which sound thoughtful, but likely meaningless (temp checks, one family at a time in the elevator, masks - except when not wearing one, of course).

I'd be skeptical of that number. I don't even know how it would be produced since Florida doesn't report those numbers as far as I know.

It seems low.

That and this surge is far less concentrated. Like 30k of our 35k April days were the Tri-state area. NYC was massively overrun and that also lead to tons of deaths.

Now our 50k a day cases are spread from Ohio, down into Florida and all the way west to California. The concentration isn't the same, the overrun is just now hitting, the death rate hasn't changed a bit.

Here is a reminder for those who need it. Nature wants to kill you. At the very best, nature has no particular incentive to keep you alive, much less happy. If we could suddenly turn off modernity, we'd have WAY too many people for nature to support. Even here, nature would not care. Your death is fertilizer. What we deem a plague is nature supporting a life form that isn't us. That's also a good way to describe a pack of wolves eating a kindergarten class because that shiat is natural. That's nature's way.

The sad thing is: all that was avoidable. The US had the choice between a harsh shutdown early in the year with tough measures to flatten the curve, social distancing, lockdown, etc or - as is now the case - a dragging up and down, no sign of relief, an incredible waste of money and energy, all to reach a level you should have reached months earlier.

The problem was of course trump who forced his GOP governors to act irresponsibly - all the while he wasn't acting at all - and as long as NY and CA were mainly hit, they enjoyed it all as being a problem for those pesky democrat states.

Tourism, gastronomy, theatres, cinemas, holiday parks, these businesses will suffer most.

Just like Dotard Covid-19, he's hidden, fudged and flat out lied with the numbers of cases, both full blown Covid-19 and the asymptomatic cases. He pushing for everything to be wide open, no restrictions because reasons..... He wants the schools to open on time (next month) with no real plan on how to deal with the symptomatic and asymptomatic spread of Covid-19 through the schools and back to home. I'm starting year thirty-four as a teacher so I know first hand how schools (both private and public) are germ factories. The media has focused on the beaches, gyms, bars etc. Just wait until the schools reopen.......

This right here.  Leading up to the March/April shutdown he kept saying "We're not shutting down".  Then we did.

I'd also like to see him in the media for once NOT looking like a confused frog.

The question is where are they getting their data.

Because if it's from the State of Florida, they "reclassified" ICU patients and suddenly, they magically had more available beds.

That's the scary thing. Florida has done everything they can to hide this -- and it's coming out anyway.

Yep. He has a tendency to take "strong stands" and then completely reverse himself.

It's better than not reversing himself, but it's still obnoxious.

How about Cuomo shoving all of those COVID positive patients into nursing homes?  Nursing homes under Cuomo's policy in NYC area account for almost as many deaths as AZ, TX, and FL statewide combined to date.

What charge should he face?

We're never going to get over this thing because we have a bunch of anti-science fear porners who think the virus will magically go away if we just hide in our houses for the next three years.

Harsh reality:  We're all getting exposed to this thing and the only thing we can somewhat control is the timing of when it happens.

I really believe the state capital needs to be moved south out of that hyper redneck panhandle area. Orlando or Tampa would be better. I think we'd see a more balanced legislature start forming instead of the religious fundies and Freedumb caucus types.

The rest of the US should be quarantining anyone that arrives in their state from Florida. We don't need their willful negligence creating even more case clusters.
