I know a guy in Cape Coral that bought an immense cabin cruiser for docking at his house in those tiny canals.  At high tide he can't get under the bridge that leads to the bay, and at low tide he scrapes the bottom going under the same bridge.

Life on the water can be cruel.

Exactly, timing is everything. I lived just downriver from this bridge (Willemsbrug) in Rotterdam on the River Maas for two years. It's lower than its more famous neighbor the Erasmusbrug, and the skippers have to thread a needle of current and tide all the time to make clearance. I used to love standing mid span and watch the container barges eke through.

Likewise it's not uncommon for the bigger container ships to have to change ports of call unexpectedly during big tides because they miss their window and can't quite fit under the Bay Bridge in Oakland either. Happened again just this week

"Sails" is probably the wrong verb to use for a boat that isn't a sailboat.

depends on the boat, speed, and current.  You don't always know when you are already in extremis.  This guy is going slow but he has the current behind him.  He might have needed quite a ways to stop.

And that current from the rear is actually the tide. He's heading upriver there. The currents in lower stretch of De Maas are no joke.
