Saying "non-avian dinosaurs" is the level of accuracy I expect from science publications, but somehow I think that would confuse the average USA Today reader.

Also, the article clearly states the correct info in the subheading bullet points, so I would call that pretty damn good. "The only dinosaurs to survive were the ones that became birds".

Yeah, no, that wasn't a dinosaur that crapped on my car, it was a bird.  They may have evolved from dinosaurs but they stopped being dinosaurs millions of years ago.
