Smitty, you do realize that Columbus never visited Ohio. Never even heard of it, right?

Columbus guy who taught at Columbus State Community College here...  In the first few weeks of every semester, there were history classes and art classes at the Christopher Columbus statue on campus.  History people hated it because Columbus was a terrible human being. Art people hated it because it was a terrible statue.

We've already gone through a bunch of alternative names.  Since Guy Fieriis from Columbus, Flavortown is popular, but I am partial to Capital City.

They could do Indigenous People's day, like California.

When I came back to the east siiiiiiiiiiieeeeede from living in California I started fostering kittens for the Maryland SPCA.  They gave me this one single kitten they had named Columbus.  So we called him Indigenous People's Cat.

I've got nothing against Juneteenth, but having two recognized holidays with in a couple of weeks might be a problem to some.

The Memorial day, the Forth of July.

It is what it is though, and Christmas and New Year could be a precident.

There's not enough warm months holidays as it is. I also propose stonewall day being a national holiday.

The good news is that Michigan is the second most hated state in the country.

The bad news is... well

Somehow, I think people will manage.

In the space of a couple weeks, my nephew manages Hanukkah, Christmas, and his birthday on January 1st just fine.

Can't wait for people to argue that recognizing the end of slavery* is somehow less worthy of a holiday than celebrating some shiatstain who was so much of a murderous bigot that he was punished for it by inquisition-era Spain.

/*well, except in countries our corporations can pay to look the other way, or in our very own prisons.
//Needs to be a movement to ACTUALLY abolish slavery. No loopholes.

All other things aside Flavortown is possibly the stupidest possible name for a city.

I remember my high school American History class in the 80s in Ohio got confusing because the teacher was no longer willing to treat Columbus as a hero-explorer but didn't have official go-ahead to tell a bunch of 14-year-olds about pillaging, murder, attempted genocide, rape, torture, greed, and corruption. It was basically, "We're not discussing Columbus in this class. You'll learn more when you're older."
