(ABC7 New York)   Obama, Clinton, Bush, and Carter show respect and honor for Negro League's 100th anniversary. However there seems to be one person missing. One particular White House resident that didn't. Hmmmmm...wonder why?   (abc7ny.com) divider line

Gubbo: How many players in the Negro leagues should have been in the major league? Anyone ever looked at it, or seen any books/articles.

With all the advanced metrics we have these days to normalize everything it seems, someone should be able to quantify just how many of the players were farked over by pure racism.

All of them.

I try to give Trump credit for giving up on attending ceremonial things he doesn't want to attend, will be largely unwelcome at and not pretending to give a crap about causes he does not support.

There's a level of honesty here that he utterly fails to exhibit in every other part of his life.

Satchel Paige for one.

Surprised Trump wasn't all over this talking about some nonsense about what a great example the Negro League was to demonstrate how great competition and free enterprise is among sports leagues.

Like when Betsy DeVos heralded historically black colleges as being pioneers in school choice.

There were quite a few of the first black MLB players who played their best years in the Negro Leagues, not even taking WW2 into account. I would have loved to see a Babe Ruth v. Josh Gibson HR derby in the early 1930s. A shame he died so young, he probably could've had a really good season or two at the very least in the MLB.

As to Trump, if it was important enough to him someone would've dug up a Grays (DC) or Cubans (NY) baseball cap for him to tip.

Debuted in MLB when he was 42 and retired when he was 60. Jamie Moyer and Julio Franco look up to this guy.
Just imagine the kind of records he could've set with the sheer longevity he had as a player.

MANY. VERY MANY.

Case in point: John McGraw (NY Giants manager in the early 20th century) desperately wanted sign a couple of Cuban ballplayers.  One problem, they were darkskinned.

The worst instance:  The Pittsburgh Pirates were second division dwellers for parts of the 40s, yet their Negro League counterparts, the Homestead Grays, were arguably the best team in Negro League baseball (some would say the best in all of baseball, period).  Arrangements were made to get in communication with the Pirates front office to sign most of them and instantly become a NL contender.

The Pirates never responded...and, after Jackie integrated the game, they would never be a serious contender until 1960.

Reminder that Josh Gibson once hit a ball so hard, that when they were playing a game the next day in a different city, one of the fielders caught the ball and the umpire called Gibson out.

I question whether the umpire had the authority to do this.

Heck, four or five of 'em still haven't landed. One smashed the windshield of Elon Musk's orbiting convertible.

Geddy Lee (yep that one) donated over 200 autographed baseballs of players to that museaum.

Burning his steak

I mean the chef keeps the waygu for something he really wants to use it for or themselves, he just sends a porter to whatever grocery store is closest to get a cheap cut that he can put in lye water for an hour or two then burn the crap out of and serve with ketchup in a gold shot glass to his orangeness

I mean that's probably the most obvious and egregious example. I just wonder how many others.

I visited a few years ago, it looked like they'd done some really nice things with the available space.  But it sounds like they got a ton of upfront cash and didn't have as robust a plan for long-term operational costs.

/but that is by no means unique in this profession
