Stratohead: Mad Scientist: Hope he didn't commit painless suicide.

Mandel wrote the music Michael Altman wrote the lyrics.

Robert Altman had his then 14 year old son Michael write the lyrics, because he wanted them to sound like the kind of goofy, maudlin thing a teenager would write.

As it turns out, Michael made far more off MASH than Robert did.  Robert got a flat fee ($50K, I think) for directing the movie.  Michael still gets royalties any time an episode of the TV show airs somewhere.

Marcus Aurelius: DecemberNitro: I used to avoid that theme song like the plague. MASH aired as the last of the good late night reruns when I was in high school, so hearing that musty old thing kick in meant it was time for sleep.

I love how ABC would add an upbeat ending so the show wouldn't cut out on a down note.  "Suicide!  Ba-dump-DUMP!"

I love that there are people who forget M*A*S*H's entire original run on tv was on CBS.

The song - with lyrics - always gets me. Growing up, I started on the TV show. Didn't see the movie until I was in my later teens - my dad didn't get it on VHS until then :) (early 90s) But I got that movie, SOB and a few other classics on DVD as soon as possible.

The only one of those shows I usually went and did other things during was Bob Newhart in 1973. I *never* missed Carol Burnett, that cast was absolutely amazing even to 12yr old me (and yes, I cried during the closing segment of her final episode).

yup and Michael's dad Robert Altman directed the movie, made about $70,000 for doing so. Michael made $1,000,000 for the lyrics.

One of these days I'm going to miss one of these threads, maybe I already have?  Who knows.

Also upthread someone brought up Captain Spalding, who I forget about basically 20 minutes after an episode where he appears because even as a kid I would always ask "What is this guy doing, and why?"

I agree...the movie version is hauntingly beautiful. I love the harmonies and chord modulations. The TV version is a little too clean and "peppy."

Gubbo: Was it me, or did it change after Radar left.

i think they cut off an opening shot of Radar from the opening credits, and it misses a note or two at the very beginning? Or was I going mad on my watch through when I was locked down and going mad with nothing else to do

Now, I have to look into this, since my wife recently bought the whole series on disc.

as iconic of a song as that was, it blew me away when I learned the lyrics. Not, Kurt Cobain blown away, but still surprising.

Oh almost undoubtedly.  But I've been most SamFlaggs on the internet for 20-25+ years so what is a guy to do.

It's you they only take him out. If you also look at the intro they made subtle changes when BJ took over for Trapper, but the song is intact. Someone actually compiled all the openings the show had:

I always liked that bike.  My wife however doesn't not like the way people drive around bikes so...

MASH was first run when I was a kid and aired at 9p in NY. For a time, as soon as we heard the start of the opening credits from the living room it was lights out in our room.

I win pretty much any game of Six Degrees where we count the steps to people in Hollywood. A college friend went to school with Gary Burghoff so he is 2 steps. So many people were in either the MASH movie or TV show with him that I can usually match with 1-2 more steps.

That was the 60 minutes clock noise for me.   When I was a kid and I heard that, it was going to be time for bed soon and the weekend was over.

You can take any random one from the first series with any random one from the final series.
