Was it me, or did it change after Radar left.

i think they cut off an opening shot of Radar from the opening credits, and it misses a note or two at the very beginning? Or was I going mad on my watch through when I was locked down and going mad with nothing else to do

I used to avoid that theme song like the plague. MASH aired as the last of the good late night reruns when I was in high school, so hearing that musty old thing kick in meant it was time for sleep.

Now, I have to look into this, since my wife recently bought the whole series on disc.

The song - with lyrics - always gets me. Growing up, I started on the TV show. Didn't see the movie until I was in my later teens - my dad didn't get it on VHS until then :) (early 90s) But I got that movie, SOB and a few other classics on DVD as soon as possible.

That was the 60 minutes clock noise for me.   When I was a kid and I heard that, it was going to be time for bed soon and the weekend was over.

Robert Altman had his then 14 year old son Michael write the lyrics, because he wanted them to sound like the kind of goofy, maudlin thing a teenager would write.

As it turns out, Michael made far more off MASH than Robert did.  Robert got a flat fee ($50K, I think) for directing the movie.  Michael still gets royalties any time an episode of the TV show airs somewhere.

I agree...the movie version is hauntingly beautiful. I love the harmonies and chord modulations. The TV version is a little too clean and "peppy."

I love how ABC would add an upbeat ending so the show wouldn't cut out on a down note.  "Suicide!  Ba-dump-DUMP!"

I win pretty much any game of Six Degrees where we count the steps to people in Hollywood. A college friend went to school with Gary Burghoff so he is 2 steps. So many people were in either the MASH movie or TV show with him that I can usually match with 1-2 more steps.

MASH was first run when I was a kid and aired at 9p in NY. For a time, as soon as we heard the start of the opening credits from the living room it was lights out in our room.

When I was a kid I changed the lyrics.

"Through early morning fog I see
Hawkeye out taking a pee
I even saw his wee-ee-nee
He banged it on a willow tree"

Still sing it that way in my head whenever I hear it.

It updated as the series went on.
It was downright disco-y by the end with lots of high-hat crashes and drums

It's you they only take him out. If you also look at the intro they made subtle changes when BJ took over for Trapper, but the song is intact. Someone actually compiled all the openings the show had:

Well the TV is different than the movie, but they also added the chopped sounds so you can believe how real this was.
