A seagull eating a rat might be the single greatest contribution that species has made to the planet.

A wonderful bird is a pelican.
His bill will hold more than his belican.
He can take in his beak.
Food enough for a week,
But I'm damned if I see how the helican.

Watching things get eaten alive is pretty disgusting, but what happens afterwards? Does the eatee wriggle and giggle inside the eater for a bit? Does it die from shock, like "OMG! I've just been eaten alive! <dying sound goes here>!"?

Inquiring minds and all that...

They prey will suffocate, or drown in the stomach acid.

The danger though is if the prey has powerful enough claws that it kills the predator on the way down by tearing internal issues. Or gets stuck and asphyxiates the predator to death by choking.

That's one o' them bite-size Eye-talian rats. We grow 'em bigger in Boston. About twice as big.

Fortunately, our seagulls are bigger, too.

I work next to a seafood processing company in the Seaport. Plenty of seagulls and plenty of rats.
