Wait, the boardwalk carnival from GTA V is real?

the highways will be effectively shut down with everyone getting out of town to spread corona where things are open

What's the use? So they shut things down for two or three days. If it's too dangerous to have things open this weekend, how is it not dangerous to have things open after this weekend? None of this shiat makes sense.

And then they realized for lack of a mask and not getting up people's asses they would go through multiple shutdowns.

Speaking as someone who lives in a beach community, the density over the July 4th weekend is through the roof. The beaches were opened for exercise with distance-keeping, which actually worked out reasonably OK. But July 4th is a different thing, it's all-day BBQ, picnic and partying.

Good.

In NJ, fireworks are illegal.  Our summers are lush and green because rainfall is plentiful.  When the towns set them off, it's always ONLY over water.

In Los Angeles, where the ground and all the plants are apparently made from gasoline, fireworks are set off all over the place by any moron with $2 to spend at the fireworks shack.

?????

Anything that will help needs to be done. If officials can't shut everything down for an extended period of time, a shutdown on this particular weekend will help. People are fixated on going out and doing something on holidays. If they have nothing to do hopefully they will just stay home which is what they should be doing all the time.

Yeah, of course I realize the crowds would be bigger this weekend but I don't see the logic in closing it all this weekend and re-opening it right after. It's still dangerous, even if it's slightly less so.

The current positive case rate would beg to differ on the "reasonably well" part.

Isn't that the case with Los Angeles highways in normal circumstances?

No dude, you gotta have 2 bucks, a car, and enough gasoline to get to Idaho. That doesn't stop anyone, mind you, from setting off shiat that is not safe, but what you can buy at those stands is so weak sauce as to be unpatriotic. I've accepted this, because I don't have a death wish, others, especially from socal, seem to want to burn it down. Which is why this shiat ain't surprising.

Never heard of the Santa Monica Pier?

I do have to say that Rockstar did an amazing job of capturing the "feel" of LA in GTA V.

As someone who also lives in a beach community, this. We've taken to staying inside for holiday weekends even when there *isn't* a pandemic. Or driving out of town a couple days before.

We tried having our beaches closed in NorCal. They closed the beach parking lots and restrooms. Result: the tourists parked in the neighborhoods, in people's driveways, one guy even went around knocking on doors asking if he could park in your garage. They peed in the bushes and dumped their trash in people's yards. We eventually gave up and reopened our beaches. July 4th is going to be a mess.

In the NJ I live in, they're going off all over the place and the dog is terrified. Must be the bennies.

You ever been to Cali beaches on the 4th? We did San Diego one year, it was my parents-in-laws'(I have no idea how to actually type that) 30th anniversary, and they'd spent their honeymoon at this kick ass place called Crystal Pier. They took us for the festivities, and we watched from the pier, because the place is basically bungalows out over the water. Very cool. Those 50 foot deep beaches were shoulder to shoulder to shoulder people. Millions. They all started arriving at about 6am, carting down couches and easy chairs or digging couches into the and to sit in. Millions of people. Makes the most crowded beach you've seen since the lockdown lifted look like a public pool 15 minutes before close, when almost everyone has gone home. Think of the most crowded event you've been to, and make it a miles long crowd at least 100 feet across, and that's why it makes sense to completely lock it down for the weekend. This is anything but a normal day at the beach, especially with the holiday on the weeks d, and especially after the lockdown.

The Florida sky is falling, they've passed the peak for Italy for daily cases.

Great, now they will all come down here to Orange County and infest our beaches and parks. We already have enough of our own Covidiots down here thank you very much.

I'm going to the desert...

Ha!  Well, if an overheating car can start a wildfire, that weaksauce sh*t can too.  It's frustrating.

If they had gone that long without opening any non-essential businesses, maybe it would've worked out better.

If they had reconsidered reopening bars in phase 2, that probably would've been much better.

Oh for farks sake... Those bike paths are my roads, I'm a cyclist and don't own a car.  What this means for me is that the majority of my friends are basically not even people I can get to if I wanted.  I hate it here, I'm paying an absurd amount of money to live like a prisoner in my own neighborhood.
