Mugato: Far be it for me to want to stifle technology in filmmaking but this shiat is going to get out of control. Just wait until the porn industry gets ahold of this.

Just wait or can't wait?

Spielberg was doing face swapping (legally) as far back as Jurassic Park, and (illegally) Back to the Future 2.

So stunt doubles won't have to hide their faces anymore, and sex scenes with body doubles won't require such careful editing. But actors do own their faces (since Back to the Future 2) so we'll still have to hire the actors.Back to the Future 2

way south: Disney's interest in this lends some credence to the Star Wars rumors.
They might be able to fix in post what was ruined in production.

So they're going to totally redo 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9?!

Subby could have just written "Fake news" as the title to the article. It would have been descriptive and accurate.

Meh.  It was predicted in The Running Man which is from 1987.

The application of this kind of tech in entertainment makes a good deal of sense.

The reality of how this tech is going to be used without proper ethical guidelines is terrifying.

Fantasy sports is really where this will take off.

Imagine seeing the '69 Mets playing against the '22 Giants.

Or the 1950 Chicago Bears vs the 1986 Chicago Bears.

Why would ESPN pay to show a current game when there would be an infinite number of computer generated games they could show?  With no players to actually pay, it would be pure profit for team owners.

Rumor was, and take this with a Death Star sized grain of salt, that they'd chuck 7-8-9 into the "legends" bin and start over.  Rey will be an alternate universe figment of JJ's imagination and a proper story arc will rise to fill the sequel trilogies place.  There will be touch ups to the first six and movies from Mandelorian and other TV spin offs to make this happen.

I think the problem isn't so much the story itself (Star wars isn't exactly hard sci-fi), it's that at least one leading cast member has passed and some others might not want to return (Harrison Ford in particular).
Also, if you're trying to fill the gap between ROTJ and where Force awakens would have picked up, you'll need look-alike actors in a bunch of age ranges.

They paid a pretty penny for a young CGI Leia in Rogue one. Getting an hour of her across a few episodes and movies would be cost prohibitive.
...Unless you can deep fake so good that people give it a pass.

/While creepy, this technology would open up a bunch of similar options.
/of course modern film scripts suck, so it can also cause atrocious sequels/remakes.
