Isn't that her entire deal. Like Romney and McCain before the "sane" republican pretends to care but only ever votes against the party when it won't matter anyway and votes with the party any time it might make a difference. They make noise and claim to be "concerned" but at the end of the day its party before country same as the rest.

I want Susan Collins to spend the rest of her life dealing with people who are as "concerned" about her as she has been "concerned" about America.

Collins: I think the roof needs to be replaced.
Roofer: Give me lots of money, and I will take care of that.
Collins: Here's the money. What will you do?
Roofer: I will be very concerned about it.

Collins: Doctor, do you think it's cancer?
Doctor: I'm concerned it is.
Collins: What should we do?
Doctor: I'll be very concerned about it.

Yes, urright.

As much as I don't like him, he is every bit as important right now as any other single Senator on the (D) side for making The Turtle a minority leader.

Of course, wouldn't surprise me one bit if, given the opportunity, he'd pull a reverse Jim Jeffords or reverse Arlen Specter. But for now, the (D)'s can't be choosy. Not in West Farking Virginia.

I love how it's somehow "choosy" to simply have the identical POS conservative Dem *but that isn't a corporate ball-gargler*.  It's bizarre to suggest that *that* one variable is make or break.  That's *the* thing we have to have in a conservaDem? A corporatist? ConservaDems are supposed to be about having to concede to the other side of the aisle on some *social* policies.  Cripes can we just get a WV Dem Senator whose daughter isn't a scumbag, for that matter?

gameshowhost://we shouldn't accept for settling for less than what we can get. there's no way manchin is the best dems can get.

I'll freely admit, I don't know West Virginia politics very well. Apparently you are an expert and can offer some names.  From Madison Wisconsin.

I do know Trump, who is the most horrendous president/politician/campaigner/public figure I can remember took 68% of the vote in 2016 to Hilary's 26%. Joe Biden ain't making up a 42% gap. And I'd hazard to guess that no Dem for Senate would without the name Joe Manchin.

I'm fine with squandering every vote he has to the other side if it means the (D)s get the Senate majority, chase The Turtle to the minority, receive chairs of committees, can push through judges with the ease of The Turtle, etc.

I get Manchin is not ideal, but unless you can come up with a single name that has both 1) a (D) after their name, and 2) has a snowball's chance in hell in WV, I think it's best to use Joe Manchin for the majority, and simply understand his yea or nay won't always be in the (D) direction

So please, what WV (D) has a shot other than Manchin?

/68 to 26. Study it out.

The actual, non-sarcastic reason Republican politicians are anti-abortion: they need the 'poors' to pump out as many kids as possible so those kids can grow up poor, desperate and willing to take whatever shiatty job the Glorious Job Creators deign to offer them without complaint.

Kids that grow up educated and well-supported tend to start wanting things like 'benefits' and 'the chance at upward economic mobility', and might even get ideas about organizing. And the Robber Barons can't have that.

Name one deciding vote where Manchin went with with Republicans. One.

Guy could've easily survived politically by voting against both counts of impeachment. He didn't. Could've torpedoed the ACA. He didn't. Dude is as blue-dog as it gets, but he's always been on the D side when it counts. I'd love an AOC clone in WV, but I am also able to acknowledge reality. The only other option for his seat right now is another Trumper that throws his vote to McConnell.

Actually, he is one of the reasons there is no public option in the ACA.

He supported impeachment, but wasn't a deciding vote. Romney was allowed to vote for impeachment by the GOP Whips to better position him to not have the Trump Stank for a POTUS run in 2024. Rubio is also allowed to diss Trump to be another GOP candidate that can be run when the party starts going on how they never really supported Trump as all.

That's all too easy.

My parents were devout Catholics and were very "pro-life". They were quietly so for a long time. Then, on the day my daughter was born, my sister who was 5 1/2 months pregnant was in a car accident with an old man who got confused and was driving the wrong way down a divided road --- head on collision. My sister was gravely inured but the seat belt did its damage. My parents wound up at the hospital where my sister gave birth to a 5 1/2 month old under traumatic circumstances that died after the premature birth.

It transformed my parents to rather radical pro-lifers. My father admitted it was pure emotion and not intellectual. A fetus was now tangible to him, that wasn't just some clump of cells, it was their grandchild.

Now this is a grossly inappropriate reference point for the broader debate --- except --- it puts the focus on the emotional aspect. To my parents, it became all about babies, beautiful babies that deserved to have a life but whose life was denied to them. It didn't matter why, it mattered that the babies deserved to have life.

And to support my mother's intentions, she had already been working for a charity that supported single mothers and continued to do so. So the sniping about only caring about the pre-born didn't jive.

The point is, it isn't all so simple as the cliches that get tossed about. I happen to disagree with my parents, and on occasion told them so, but avoided making it a point of visceral contention between us. I disagreed with their thought processes but not their motives. They believed in the value of the lives of the unborn. They discounted the sacrifices of a woman who had to endure an unwanted pregnancy because they believed in self-sacrifice as a virtue. And they walked the walk.

I disagree with them because I don't think they they can fairly map their willingness to self-sacrifice to a duty of others to self-sacrifice, especially when they can't understand the scope of the sacrifice required of others but also because it's unfair to map their personal perspective of the value of a fetus onto others. They acquired a particular, emotion based, sense of value. That doesn't make that value intrinsic or universal.

But again, the point I would make is that people project sets of values and motivations onto others and that's often not right. It was wrong of my parents to project their values onto others and promote the resulting sense of duty onto others. It's also wrong of some of presume that the motivations of people like my parents are to subjugate women and punish them. Or that they want to force women to pump out serfs to work the fields or the fast food industry.

Huh?  Abortion is one of those issues that conservative politicians love.  They can claim moral superiority by paying lip service to their base, many of whom only care about this one issue and are happy with a canned speech or even just phrases from the 1960s.  Meanwhile the same politician is trying to euthanize Americans by repealing the ACA, kidnapping and torturing children in for-profit concentration camps, laundering money for wealthy politicians in China and Russia, and dismantling our constitutional freedoms.
You know, the Best People, a bunch of really Proud Boys.
Collins can enjoy her upcoming election loss.
