We as a nation, as a planet and as a species are farked until GOP senators either grow a spine or are removed from office.

Hard to accept that our system is set up so that 53 people could hold the entire world hostage.

Worth reading the whole article. It starts off sounding bad and then only gets worse. It's ridiculous that the GOP continues to support Trump.

Thanks, Senate Republicans, for putting Party over Country again and again.

The calls with Putin and Erdogan were particularly egregious in terms of Trump almost never being prepared substantively and thus leaving him susceptible to being taken advantage of in various ways, according to the sources -- in part because those conversations (as with most heads of state), were almost certainly recorded by the security services and other agencies of their countries. In his phone exchanges with Putin, the sources reported, the President talked mostly about himself, frequently in over-the-top, self-aggrandizing terms: touting his "unprecedented" success in building the US economy; asserting in derisive language how much smarter and "stronger" he is than "the imbeciles" and "weaklings" who came before him in the presidency (especially Obama); reveling in his experience running the Miss Universe Pageant in Moscow, and obsequiously courting Putin's admiration and approval. Putin "just outplays" him, said a high-level administration official -- comparing the Russian leader to a chess grandmaster and Trump to an occasional player of checkers. While Putin "destabilizes the West," said this source, the President of the United States "sits there and thinks he can build himself up enough as a businessman and tough guy that Putin will respect him." (At times, the Putin-Trump conversations sounded like "two guys in a steam bath," a source added.)Ho Lee Shiat. That's scary as hell.

It's crazy. Pence would give them the same judges and would sign anything put in front of him.

Being afraid of Trump's base is a BS excuse. A few months of Fox News changing the narrative and there wouldn't even be a Trump base left.

Hill - author of a definitive biography of Putin -- started to explain some of the nuances she perceived from the call, according to CNN's sources - offering insight into Putin's psychology, his typical "smooth-talking" and linear approach and what the Russian leader was trying to achieve in the call. Hill was cut off by Trump, and the President continued discussing the call with Jared and Ivanka, making clear he wanted to hear the congratulatory evaluation of his daughter and her husband, rather than how Hill, Tillerson or McMaster judged the conversation.

Every single one of those despicable GOP senators who voted to acquit this man in his impeachment trial know that this is absolutely true.  This is who the man is.  This is what he values.  And they damn well knew he did EXACTLY what he was charged with.

fark them.  fark the GOP, they are farking traitors.

FTFA: "They didn't know BS," he said of Bush and Obama -- one of several derisive tropes the sources said he favored when discussing his predecessors with the Turkish and Russian leaders.

That's not a phrase. But I can totally see Trump going "I'll show you BS like you've never seen!"

2020-06-29 6:57:10 PM
Also FTFA: The sources did cite some instances in which they said Trump acted responsibly and in the national interest during telephone discussions with some foreign leaders.

Oh good!

They describe his call to Putin as coming off as slavish but his calls with Teresa May and Angela Merkel his outright sadistic.  Apparently however bad you imagine it was - it was worst.

After a second Dump term, there may not be a country left to restore.

America can recover both domestically and internationally from a one term disaster like Dump.

Competent World leaders realize that one time electoral aberrations happen, and will work with the next administration in good faith to restore relationships, but if Americans are dumb enough to do this twice, all bets are off.

2020-06-29 8:25:42 PM
Me from the redlit thread:

The accounts of how he treated Merkel and May as compared to Erdogan and Putin are exactly what I would expect of him.

This is because he's a turd.

2020-06-29 8:33:41 PM
I mean... what else would you expect from Trump?

Hell, anybody with no experience in politics is likely to get outplayed by world leaders. They've spent their entire lives ensconced in velvet statecraft and made it their life work, you throw an amateur out there it's like tossing a high school kid in an operating theater and expecting them to do a quadruple bypass. Doesn't matter how smart you are, without the specialized knowledge and experience, it's going to go poorly.

Toss in the fact that Trump is lazy, stupid, criminally incurious and has a temperament that would embarras the most outrageously misbehaved toddler and there's pretty much no chance the outcome will be anything short of total catastrophe for the nation he's supposed to represent.

Trump won the right to represent this nation because of people who didn't vote or people who voted against Clinton for petty or false reasons. I'd say this is probably the most truly representative we've seen our government in a long time. Stupid, lazy, ineffective, disorganized, disinterested, selfish and self-destructive, just like the people who voted for it.

Bullshiat.  This is exactly why the "deep state" of career people exist in the federal government. Trump actively ignores, or even goes against, the institutional knowledge of the experts. Experience has nothing to do with the ability to work as part of a team.

No, not bullshiat. The notion that any rando with no experience in politics and/or public service can just walk into the Oval Office and do a great job is just as absurd as saying that rando could be effective in any other advanced job on the planet with no experience. That's one of Trump's many, many egregious weaknesses.

The rest of the stuff you said about him ignoring and undermining his advisers is another one.

Pence is about as charismatic as wet cardboard.

That's the most charitable explanation I can give that explains why the GOP hasn't dumped Trump for Pence yet. The real reason is probably more closely related to the fact that the book on Pence's nightstand is a Bible, and not a book of Hitler's speeches.

The Republicans had a chance to salvage November in January. If they convicted Trump and removed him, they could have gotten Fox News to spin things to the base, then they put up either Mittens or Nikki in November. They probably don't win the WH (although I'd give it better odds than Trump), but they'd almost certainly keep the Senate.

Well, we elected an idiot, the Republicans decided to protect him, so many of the world leaders of course took full advantage of him.  When you stick your ass out of a busy street, someone is going to kick it.

You had your chance, Republican party.  You could have ended this farce back in November by voting to impeach him.  But you chose to keep walking with him and drag America toward the dark. The only way to start walking back toward the light is to force him from office immediately.  Impeach him again.  Instruct your base not to vote for him so that he KNOWS he has no chance of winning in the fall.  Let him know you will not support him such that his only option is immediate resignation.  Every day you do nothing is another mark against you.
