Proof that you can't have democracy and simultaneously run a substandard education system that relegates most the the students to the role of dummies, and only concentrates on getting resources to the very few smart kids.  Might work in a society that agrees to government by the smart kids... but what we've got is dummies who always hated the smart kids acting out against what the smart kids told them... Because the "smart kids" know best and should be their lords and masters? Because anyone not deemed a "smart kid" by some washed up mediocrities who ate little more than hail wardens are some how stupid?

Here's a thought, the US education system is geared for mediocrity and is more than happy to let the majority get by with a substandard education while touting those that excel in their narrow minded cookie cutter format as "better" and  "smarter" simply because those kids are better at confirming to the system and following the routine than the others

In American K-12 education, free thinking makes you an idiot, needing special attention or alternative forms of study makes you a reject

People like you who buy into this bullshiat farked up system only help perpetuate the idiocracy you whine about

The most powerful resource we have on this planet is the human mind. The American education system is hell bent on rejecting and discarding the majority of America's potential and try make everyone fit through one sized fits all course structure and standardized testing - essentially throwing the vast majority of intellectual potential down the shiatter

Because I can tell you right now, that I'm America's education system Einstein would've never reached his potential, he'd have been told he was wrong and corrected away into oblivion. How many brilliant minds has American education stunted and ignored? Possibly tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands

Sorry but it takes more than savants and show dogs who test well to keep America the leader in innovation. And America is about to find out that China's already taken the lead and we won't be getting it back

Under lottery-level optimal conditions, vaccine ready for distribution in a year.

More likely 2-3 years away.  Or perhaps never.

I don't think the U.S is a nation of idiots.  I have friends and even a few relatives there.  It's your incessant tendency to politicize everything that comes off the most idiotic to outside observers, even though we realize your extreme individualism and federal system are unique.

Right now, the internal debate you have raging seems to be about personal freedoms.  But even if an effective vaccine becomes widely available in a best case scenario, won't your debate then turn to a raging political war over:
a) fair distribution
b) trustworthiness of vaccine
c)  personal character traits as related to your opinion of the vaccine
d)  skepticism of vaccine because there was never a real problem anyway
e)  deep regional flaws and disturbing political affiliations that have come about because of a medical remedy being present
f)  the unlikeable screen presence of any medical official endorsing the vaccine, and their potential for scandal
g)  the relation of the vaccine to Obama

And on and on.  It's like you guys are allergic to harmony.  You have to be fighting someone.

Well, for the past 35 years we have been fighting funding schools.
So, no. We're collectively stupid.
For all intents and purposes we thought Bill Gates being smart was enough to save the world
maybe we should have educated everyone and not just Bill Gates.

We all joke about Florida, but seriously, imagine if COVID-19 keeps rising in India the way it's starting to. They could double the number of global cases and deaths on their own before summer's out.

As another example, Sierra Leone has imposed a strict mask-wearing order since June 1, because if things get out of control, there's no going back.

Stay indoors, wear a mask, donate to MSF. The next step is going to be a rough one, but for different people and for different reasons.

Man, that poor Ranger... The Canyon is tough, and it's farking hot. The first time I went there were snow flurries at the top, and it was at least 100° down at the river. And the Red Wall is just add hot, and it's steep, always in the sun, and the most brutal part of the trail. So even though when he gets to the river, he might get to kick off the boots, roll up the pants, and dip his legs in the water, that is nowhere near the hottest part of the trail.

So I don't envy the guy at all, having to wear a mask. When it's hot and steep, that is not what you need to add to your kit. But he's doing his job, there to keep people safe, give directions, render aid, assist stranded hikers, all of that shiat because he likes what he does, and he does it for everyone. People don't go into the Canyon as prepared as they think they are, and the employees at the top aren't always the most knowledgeable about the once-in-a-lifetime place where they work as you think they'd be, so people like this are there for you, sweating their asses off and helping you with whatever you need...

I'd move my family to Canada if I could be sure of affording it. We'd happily quarantine for 2+ weeks and wear hazmat suits if that's what it took.

There's plenty of science in the pipeline. Vaccines, synthetic antibodies, improved treatment protocols, etc. People who get the disease today have a better chance of surviving it than those who caught it in March (assuming the hospitals aren't over 100% capacity). There's also the basic science of observing the way it is transmitted and updating the public health guidance in response, e.g. more focus on wearing masks and avoiding indoor environments, less focus on hand washing and bleaching your groceries.

Unfortunately, science takes time and some people (SOME people, he says while glaring southward at a certain international border) refuse to follow any of the short-term mitigation steps to delay the pandemic until the other stuff is ready.

If you want to go maskless, socialize, party, etc., go right ahead. But you do NOT have the right to expect ANYONE ELSE to work or go out of our way to serve you. In fact, every business is private property and we are now seeing signs saying :No Shoes, No Shirt, No Pants, No Mask = No Service. The grocery store in the tiny town I live in has a cop enforcing it, too. Simply put, do what you want, but you are NOT entitled to anyone doing anything for you, and you should expect to be kept away from the rest of us.

People who catch and spread the virus are a threat to everyone, regardless of how they caught it. Private parties are a great concern right now.

Everyone please, just for a few weeks forget all the other nonsense in your daily lives, wear a mask and avoid social contacts in public.

Not gonna happen 'cause humans gonna human and risk assessment ain't a thing humans do well.
