Depending on the jump plane, he 'might' not have tightened/fastened the leg straps for comfort reasons if he was crammed in the back while climbing to altitude... probably not though

/30+ years ago our school club used a Cessna 182 (? been a while, small plane though) that would hold the pilot & four jumpers.  The last guy to go out had to crouch bent over in the tail section while the others stepped out at whatever altitude they were supposed to
//that guy generally didn't completely tighten the leg straps (always fastened though) until getting near jump altitude both for movement room & legs going to sleep reasons.
///for the amusing after many decades three - I forgot to tighten them back up ... once ... They said that they heard my scream down on the ground when the opening shock let the straps slide up into my crotch...

The problem is the description saying he was not wearing any parachute when he hit the ground. The main parachute is designed so it can be released if needed, but the reserve is not. When we jumped with chest-mounted reserves in the old days, they could be unclipped from the harness, but modern reserves cannot.

This was not reported as a tandem jump, so the video of the jump with the old lady isn't relevant beyond saying she obviously didn't want to jump and should not have been pushed out. I have ridden back down in the plane when a student decided they didn't want to jump. It didn't happen often, but there's no way I would have jumped while leaving a scared student behind.

If there was really no parachute or harness on the body at impact, I think this was a suicide.

Yeah, but most of them don't leave a crater in the ground.

LesserEvil: There was an incident in the 80s, where this skydiver was apparently excited about his new helmet camera... he gets on the airplane, and all his fellow skydivers are waving tothe camera, all smiles. They get up into the air, and you see the first few divers go up to the door, waving as they jump out, then the camera guy heads tot he door, everybody smiles at him, and he jumps out... even as he is falling from the airplane, the other divers are flipping around for the camera.

When it comes time for him to open his chute, you see his hand reach down, but there is no ripcord. You see his hands reach for his back... he has no parachute on. You see the view move around as he realizes he has boarded the airplane and jumped out of it with no parachute on. He looks up at the sky, and down at the ground, which is rapidly spiraling up at him. Suddenly, static.

I recall seeing this on CNN, and I think it might have made it into a Faces Of Death movie.

What kind of friends did this guy have? Didn't any of them think, gee, Bob has no chute, should we tell him? Was that just funny to them? WTF?

In that incident the problem was that the camera was bulky and had its batteries, vcr and such mounted in a backpack. Thus the guy thought he had a parachute on.

Maybe he was a dyslexic magician?

He was supposed to make a parachute appear, after jumping out of the plane without one.

Considerate of him to "land" in the fire department parking lot. Saved them a bit of trouble.

I mean, everyone on the load wears a rig. Even the pilot and ride alongs. So, he had a rig before he went out the door. No one pin checked him?

Yeah, I don't get in the airplane until EVERYTHING is fastened, checked, and configured EXACTLY how I need/want it to be as I leave that airplane. About the only thing I leave until the last second is flipping the G3 helmet face shield down into place right about the time the door opens at altitude. Otherwise, it's just too much adrenaline and too easy to miss something that you should have taken care of back on the ground when you and/or anyone who gear-checked you would have found and corrected.

Ironically, and proving that point, on my A-license check-dive last August, I'm about 5-10 seconds into the dive and as I turn to face the instructor, he's smiling and mimes the "close the face shield" move with his hands. I was so nervous that I had forgotten to close it and didn't even notice it as the dive began.

Don't forget pin checks before exiting....
Congrats on the A license!!!

And........
Stay current, you will learn and retain more the closer the jumps are together.
Under canopy, keep your head on a swivel. Make a few high hop and pops with others and play with proximity flying to understand how small inputs affect the flight. Learn how to fly the stall point of the canopy (for landing out)
Your more likely to die with a good parachute over your head than in freefall so don't ignore that side of it.

Enjoy, have Fark loads of fun ....
Learn something on every jump.
And we will cover safety meetings at a later time.

I can't speak to that incident, but nobody I have ever met in the sport would think it was funny or let it happen. However if you announced that you were going to cutaway over the pond, they would all gather to watch your stupid human trick, cheer you on, then take you to a hospital if required.

I spent my 10 years in the sport at this place, after making a few texts making sure that it was not a friend or loved one that made a mess of the fire dept parking lot.
I found out this......
Male, 40's. Made a normal solo skydive, opened parachute between 3000' and 4000'....... proceeded to deliberately climb out of the harness and fall to his death.
Airplane was a twin otter(super)
If you ever find a video called Frankie's low pull, you can see the parking lot towards the end....

State Police have not located the parachute McCartin was wearing when he left the plane and they are asking anyone who may have located it or witnesses the incident to call troopers at the Highland barracks at 845-691-2922.

It's on Craigslist.  For Sale.  One parachute.  Like new.  Never opened.  I don't need help selling this.  Will meet anywhere but the fire station.
