mofa: California could certainly do better, but there are 30 states with more cases per capita. We're the largest state, with 50% more people than the next most populous state (Texas), so we'll always have high raw numbers.

Oh you, with your accurate and relevant numbers. Why must you impede Subby's California hate-boner? So rude.

States that what?

I'm not wholly up to speed on my state of origin but what did California do stupidly (especially compared to Republican led states)?

Difficulty: you can't point at Orange County or San Diego.

Flu virus with 'pandemic potential' found in China

The good news is that we already know how to avoid a flu pandemic - by doing all of the same stuff that we're supposed to be doing to avoid COVID-19 (masks, limited social interaction, physical distance, frequent hand washing, etc).

I would sooner believe that White Russian cocktails are the cure to coronavirus than whatever injecting bleach nonsense the president espouses. Plus, they're damn tasty. Needs more Kahlua

Not sure what happened 2 weeks ago, but even Ohio is trending upwards at an alarming rate. Till now we've been very middle of the pack for cases, and very good on a per-population basis and never needed more than 20% of our ICU beds for Covid patients, but that's looking like it might be history here shortly. I don't know if some particularly bad piece of misinformation swept through the right wing zeitgeist about 2 weeks ago or what but it's not a good thing at all.

I blame protesting.  Gathering in large groups was lauded by the press, so others thought it was okay to follow suit at bars, restaurants, and family gatherings.

/Keep politics out of it
//Keep masks on

studebaker hoch: phishrace: The states didn't screw up. The orders should've come from Washington. Instead, states allow the counties to basically do what they want. LA opened the bars and restaurants too early. The governor is now threatening to withhold money from counties that open too early, but it's too little too late. When this is all over, hopefully we'll have a national plan for the next one. Leaving it to the states and counties was a bad idea.

We really needed the steady hand and wise words of a competent national leader through all of this.

What we got was "You're on your own".

Isn't he a germaphobe?  As President Germaphobe, this should have been where he excelled.  Wouldn't even a self-centered germaphobe logically want everyone else to be more germaphobic if only to keep himself safer/healthier in the long run?  He has no problems preaching on twitter on everything else... even on trivial things at 3am.  He's a stupid germaphobe.

NYC was densely populated enough to achieve critical mass for exponential SARS-CoV-2 spread.

LA, at only 1/3 the density, was only 1/3 as "enriched" and did not detonate with the same yield.

/We nearly lost NYC.

Two weeks ago was when The Donald declared that the virus was over and we could all go back to normal. June 15th.

The overwhelming majority of protesters were wearing masks.

Wearing masks is a nearly 100% effective way to prevent covid from spreading.

You are, as usual, full of it.

Flu virus with 'pandemic potential' found in China
A new strain of flu that has the potential to become a pandemic has been identified in China by scientists.
It emerged recently and is carried by pigs, but can infect humans, they say.

The researchers are concerned that it could mutate further so that it can spread easily from person to person, and trigger a global outbreak.

While it is not an immediate problem, they say, it has "all the hallmarks" of being highly adapted to infect humans and needs close monitoring.

As it's new, people could have little or no immunity to the virus.

Since its 2020, prepare for another pandemic folks.

At least the Branch Covidians will actually be kinda right when they say that one is "just like the flu," or some nonsense. They'll just be saying it without awareness of how bad an unchecked flu can truly be.
