Jesus, so much hate for two people who went on a cruise and didn't predict the worldwide pandemic that showed up.

Bottom line is the cruise company said they could get a refund for the entire trip plus a credit for that same amount on a future trip, but then never actually gave the refund back. You'd all be pissed at them too.

Get off your freakin high horses Farkers.

Why would she expect the cruise line to reimburse her for excess baggage fees? Travel lighter. Maybe have the dude leave his matching Pac Man tie and blazer at home next time.

Not everyone taking an expensive trip is a billionaire my grandparents went on a super duper luxury cruise it was their one big trip of a lifetime and took them years to save up for it. In fact I think it might have been the only trip they ever took that wasn't within a two hour drive of home.

Guess what? The vouchers are soon worthless too.

Bankruptcy in inevitable, at this point, the cruise lines are just collecting all possible debt to right off.

What kind of moron signs up to be locked into a floating casino/hotel for weeks and months? No sympathy. If they got their money back they would just waste it again.
It remains an immoral and unethical act to let a sucker keep his/her money.

I could buy a clean, street legal Atom 2 for less than one of their tickets. Have money left over for slicks.

I am sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. I had it in March and it wasn't fun, the extreme fatigue was bad, like taking a shower was so exhausting I needed a nap. three months later and I still have lingering issues. I hope you have a relatively mild case and don't need to go to the hospital and avoid the long term effects.

I don't know most experiences, but if this is mild...Well, civilization you best develop a vaccine pronto or what we've seen so far will look like a walk in the park.  I'm a relatively healthy  40s guy who normally walks 5-7 miles a day and some days as much as 15-20 miles. Now I'm getting winded walking to my kitchen.  I've currently got a 103.1 fever but each day it disappears and comes roaring back at night.  Muscle and joint pain that no amount of OTC medicine touches.  The feeling of Mike Tyson hitting me in the chest ever time I breathe. Lightheaded.  Bad balance.  I normally eat an exorbitant amount but it's taken 3 days to finish a medium pizza(something I often did previously in one sitting).  And on and on...

In other words, if what I have is Coronavirus(Dr seemed to think it was likely) this is a permanent world changer without a vaccine.  No movies, no gyms, no concerts, no large gatherings period.  If a average Joe with good general health can fall this far so quickly (it started Friday) then no insurance company will ever back large public places.  They won't be able to afford the liability.

If this isn't coronavirus and it's a flu, we're in for a hell of a flu season.

My Godfather never had children and after he retired his wife and him decided to take a world cruise. My aunt became ill and she made him promise to take the cruise after she passed.
The cruise left NY and my godfather had a nervous breakdown and was sent to a sanitarium and when my dad heard about it he sent for him to come stay with us.
He got my bed which had a canopy and when he stayed with us our huge cat " Cinders " was messing around in the attic and fell through the Sheetrock and the canopy and landed on his chest. He shrieked and didn't have a heart attack and slowly recovered.
I would never take a cruise again.

That's pretty much what I imagine a cruise to be like anyway.

I took a cruise with my daughters family on the Disney cruise line from 2/28-3/8/20 . It was a total bore for me but they loved every minute of it. They live in the West Coast so I figured back before Christmas that this would be a nice family trip since I lost my wife in November.
They were very proactive about getting all the people to wash and wipe their hands but the whole mask thing hadn't started.
I got under the wire but I wouldn't recommend cruising to anyone unless they love food and canned Island hopping.

My sincere best wishes and condolences. I'm dealing with Type 2 diabetes, severe COPD and I'll be 70 this fall. Every month now is a crapshoot. I get my flu shot; I get my pneumonia shot; there isn't a Covid shot yet and I could still get a heart attack or get run down by a beer truck. Personally, I'd as soon get shot by a jealous husband while climbing out a back window but the chances of that happening are slim & none.

Live what you have and make the best of it. And take a MAGAT or two with you when you go.

Mrs Spldng & I put down about a tenth of that for airfare and a discount 10 day river cruise for tulip time in Amsterdam. Everything has been deferred until spring 2021 at this point. If the Covid gets me before then, my wife take one of our daughters on the cruise in my memory. If we both kick it, both daughters go traveling.

After that, whatthehell, I'm dead and I'll have other concerns.

El_Dan: The laws of contracts be a harsh mistress.

Friends of mine spent some serious cash on registering for that notable "music tour of europe" vacation thing. Don't know the name, but the oldest son is very musically gifted and it was something like a 3-week tour through 15 countries or whatever by a tour group that's been in business for over half a century.

At the start of the whole 'rona crisis, the parents had a talk about making the payments. It was about $4,000 as a down payment for the mom and the son to go on the trip. The company swore that they had absolutely, positively, never canceled in something like 57 years and this wasn't going to cancel this year. The deposit was non-refundable. They paid.

The company canceled the trip. The contract is so unbelievably one-sided but that's what you have to deal with if you are signing up to go on this trip. Sign, or don't go. My friend had the contract reviewed by a lawyer who said it was amazingly one-sided, but it was what they had to do. The contract states the company president can cancel the trip for any reason up to 10 days before departure and there is no recourse, no refunds of deposits.

Apparently the company figured that canceling and keeping all the deposits from people across American gives them several million in the bank to try to carry the company forward. Google results are from thousands of people in America who are absolutely steamed about it.

I asked if he paid with a credit card that he could dispute and try to reverse the charges. No such luck: this company is so old school that they only take checks. Apparently for just this reason, so no one can yank their money back.

On the topic of the thread, my wife and I were supposed to have a big year of travel this year - Las Vegas for a fashion show where she was showing stuff in April, New York for our five-year anniversary in May and Los Angeles to follow the college basketball team I support and/or maybe scout out that area for a future landing spot for her clothing stuff in December.

We only booked the Las Vegas flights. We went through Southwest. Supposedly, their normal policy is you can fly, like, 10 months after a missed flight. But even if I'm out that money ... [shrug]. It happens. People get too caught up about money. We're in a pandemic. If losing $300 is the worst thing that happened to me, I'm doing better than the 100K+ who have died.

As for those who have had bad symptoms of whatever it may be, do note that we've had a couple other threads of Farkers who have personally lived through the virus, including one who was in the hospital:

I've paid for a chartered music festival cruise that was/is supposed to sail in late January 2021. If it doesn't (and I don't think it will), it's already paid for when rescheduled. If it all goes bankrupt and I don't get refunded, oh well. Sometimes life sucks.

That said, wear the damn masks!

She had the option for over $100k in cruise line bucks and declined. That's probably enough for a cruise all the way to the moon and back! Sure, she might not ever get to redeem it but still how cool would a framed voucher for $100k of worthless cruise bucks on your wall be? Quite the conversation starter, let me tell you.

I am sorry your plans were disrupted but I am happy to see you are being an adult about it. still sucks. my father died and I wasn't able to make it back. getting on a plane is not happening anytime soon. definitely not while I was a COVID bomb. that timing was abysmal.
it has been helpful to me to hear from others that had it. both those threads are great. I think I got off really easy. I was sick as hell and it definitely sucked and still does but seeing people who were hospitalized is jarring. I mostly slept, felt like crap then slept more. it was bad. the lingering fatigue thing three months later is troubling but I am not going to complain.
a huge thing is that work was super nice about it. I had PTO for the time I was sick, the three weeks I spent after getting better to be sure I wasn't contagious and have let me work from home because of the fatigue thing (will probably go back for half shifts this week but I haven't been to work since early March). I was scared that it could get worse and I may die (not super scared), I was more scared I was going to infect someone else and possibly kill them so I didn't leave the house for quite awhile. but I didn't worry about money or losing my job so that was a huge relief. I had a lot of guilt about that as I was seeing people losing their jobs. I was in a weird headspace for a while there. still am I guess.
big ups to the folks who worked and delivered groceries. this could have been much worse without them. I am still only ordering essential things.
talking too much. like I have been home alone for four months and have no social outlet. sorry.

that sounds worse than what I had. started. with a sore throat, I had a fever for four or five days, breathing issues and a painful cough, lost smell which made everything taste awful so I couldn't eat for days, a head ache and I slept more than 16 hours a day for a week. the fatigue thing was bad, going to the bathroom was a challenge and it is just a 20' walk. I also had severe disorientation which was scary. it wasn't not knowing what day it was it was being sure it was Friday night but it was actually Tuesday morning and I just could not believe it, I was doubting my phone and the sun being out. I would watch movies I had seen before and was convinced the movie had been heavily edited and the actors were all different (when did they add Arnold Swarzenegger in Predator?). it was like going insane. I never got the body aches, thankfully.
I still have some nasty fatigue issues three months later. walking to the store is a challenge and I walked a lot before. I am also seeing things in my peripheral vision that aren't there, which is not fun.

sounds like you got it pretty bad. your breathing issues are concerning. painful lungs and extreme shortness of breath is a red flag. you may want get checked out. you can try to wait it out but I would at least call your doctor and see what they think. better to be proactive than wait until your lips turn blue and you need an ambulance.

I hope you get well soon. people treating this like its a joke or like it is just a cold have no idea.
