Neondistraction: These idiots seem to think that people only care when it's a white cop that does the killing, but they'd be just as upset if it'd been a black cop that knelt on George Floyd's neck for nearly 9 minutes.  They just want the cops, regardless of color, to stop killing a disproportionate amount of black people.

Is it really that hard to understand, or is it just willful ignorance?

In response to the killing, the mayor of Minneapolis cried on television about the death of a black man at the hands of a white police officer.

Anyone who's been paying attention knows that that's not what it's about, but for a lot of people that would be all they would see of the situation.

It's not willful ignorance, this ignorance is taught.

A while ago Eric Holder was AG of the United States and he urged white Americans to engage in conversations about race. It seemed like a bad idea for the average white to do that then and it still seems like a bad idea today. As this naive young woman has discovered, race is the third rail. You as a white person will be unlikely to do or say much that will improve the situation, and involving yourself at all will place you in jeopardy. She had nothing much to gain, but a lot to lose. Before I was self employed, when the opportunity to have That talk came up on company time, I'd take a leave day. I always got along fairly well with my black supervisor and enjoyed the company of some black co-workers, but still felt like I was walking on egg shells. Words were selected carefully so as not to offend.

Steakzilla: ManifestDestiny: Steakzilla: Al!: Steakzilla: Mrtraveler01: Steakzilla: Mrtraveler01: Wanted to get in here before the "Farkers with alternative opinions" start telling us that she has a point.

More like who gives a fark if she has a point.  Why did she get kicked outta school for this?  Lol

Because she was stupid enough to wear a shirt with the university's name on it while making that video for starters...

That seems like a dumb reason to censor someone.  Maybe they should make you sign an agreement before selling the shirt.  That way only true believers get to exercise their first amendment rights while wearing the shirt.

It's a private university.  If she was expelled, I'm sure they have explicit rules that she violated.  If she left voluntarily, you have even less ground to stand on.

If she left voluntarily then that's on her.  Otherwise I don't think private institutions should be able to take away you first amendment rights outside of the institution... If you disagree with me that's fine.  I'm guessing you also supported the NFL over the whole kneeling thing right?

Nobody took her rights away. She's fully free to post on tiktok all she likes...just not while being affiliated with that school. Freedom of speech doesn't include freedom from consequences.

So this woman is paying money to go to the university and is then told to only say things the school seems appropriate even when outside of class or risk expulsion.  How does she have freedom of speech? How did you feel about the NFL btw?

I guess we need to know the student code of conduct she agreed to.

FTFY. I guarantee you that if you asked the people in the community there, there'd be plenty.

They're poor minorities in "bad neighborhoods". Therefore, no one listens because they don't give a shiat for exactly the unspoken attitude you demonstrated.

They do report on it in the local media. I know because I live near St. Louis.

The Fox News watching crowd just refuses to recognize it because it gives them an excuse for them to hand wave cases like Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd.

Show me where on MSNBC, CNN actually reports on these....

Uhh... ok.

Foxnews actually reports on these during their programming...MSNBC & CNN do not.

Maybe ask yourself why Fox News likes covering black on black crime so much, rather than why other cable networks don't see it as particularly newsworthy.

Like I've shown, CNN and MSNBC actually do cover the violence in Chicago. I guess he's upset those stories don't have ominous music playing in the background like they are on Fox News?

...besides, how does he know they don't cover them? He never watches them to check.

FarkQued: Yes, police involved shooting and other negative police stories are dramatically over-reported based on the actual percentage of violence they represent in this circumstance, if news were prorated based on violence then less than 1% of a day would be a bad cop story and 23.6 hours would be drugs, gang, poverty, crime, and murder.

What number of unarmed people being killed by cops is an acceptable number based on the US' crime rate?

NearCanuck:I guess we need to know the student code of conduct she agreed to.

According to their handbook, there are several rules she may have violated.

If she used HSU-provided internet to upload the video, she is violating the the code of conduct (Internet Access B 8. e.)
Under Policies, Judicial Policies, the university outlines their legal standing that they can expel any student whose actions negatively impact the campus community.  It also states plainly that their jurisdiction is defined as applying to "conduct that occurs on university premises, at university sponsored activities, and to off-campus conduct that adversely affects the university community and/or the pursuit of its objectives." It goes on to state that the code of conduct applies from the moment it is signed to the moment of graduation, and can even be applied to incidents that occur prior to signing if the Dean considers it valid.
Section 6. under Policies states that students can be reprimanded for any behavior that creates a disturbance or distress in others.
Section 9. under Policies explains that the university holds its students and faculty to a much higher standard than law requires, and that they base this on the Bible.
Section 26. under Policies again states that students and employees are expected to maintain these high standards on and off campus, during class, and during personal time.
Section 28. under Policies states, in part, "The student who enrolls at HSU should expect to become a part of the total campus environment. He/she should realize the uniqueness of the university in terms of its traditions, goals, policies and regulations. In becoming a part of the university, the student agrees to uphold these characteristics."

Reading through their handbook, it appears that there was likely an informal process to first deal with the situation, and if the student feels they've been handled improperly or unjustly, there is a formal process that follows.  I have no idea whether there was a formal hearing for her, but HSU is clearly within their rights to terminate her enrollment for no less than 2 years based on the code of conduct.  While I don't feel her post is outwardly racist, it is ignorant, and it definitely was intended to provoke a reaction of some sort, and it would be ridiculous to believe that no one was made uncomfortable or put in distress by the video, nor should any reasonable person believe that the video could not possibly adversely affect the community or the pursuit of HSU's objectives.

Zero.  Police are trained to handle difficult situations, and must be held to a higher standard than the population at large, because we trust them with weaponry and broad authority to use it.

Yep, she is absolutely correct.  Not that I would ever be so stupid as to point it out in a public forum where I could be identified.  Statistics and logic are meaningless in the twit-sphere.  Which is basically the entire country at this point.

Sure, Somacandra, she doesn't pay attention to African-American media.  Yeah, that's the problem.  Perhaps she was not so much reacting to articles in the, or any, paper, as she was to shiat that's closing down her neighborhood due to broken windows and looting.

Wow, I finally watched the video.

11 edgy seconds.

Five years older, and it probably wouldn't even  have crossed her mind to post something like that.

Hopefully she can use this whole scenario for personal growth.
