How many folks are going to go on about the Secular Humanists ruining education before they realize that Hardin-Simmons is a private Baptist university?

Somehow I have a feeling that the white student who made the racist video has never paid attention to African-American media or any activism concerning street crime in majority black neighborhoods. Because there's historically been a lot of anti-crime and anti-violence activism, especially through local churches and mosques. And now gets to wonder why whitesplaining shiat she knows nothing about gets her in trouble.

These idiots seem to think that people only care when it's a white cop that does the killing, but they'd be just as upset if it'd been a black cop that knelt on George Floyd's neck for nearly 9 minutes.  They just want the cops, regardless of color, to stop killing a disproportionate amount of black people.

Is it really that hard to understand, or is it just willful ignorance?

Let alone the shirt of the university she went to.

That left the door wide open to expel her. Guess she didn't get her money's worth at that school to do something stupid like that on top of something even more stupid.

She has a point. Do you hear anyone complaining about Chicago? Baltimore? Where are the marches for peace for those neighborhoods where people are slaughtered every weekend? Just this past weekend in Chicago an infant was shot and died as well as a 10 yr old eating ice cream. No outrage over these actions.

The marches for peace always seem to end in gunfire. Which lead to funerals, that end in gunfire. Which lead to marches to stop the violence that end in gunfire.

Cycle occasionally interrupted by a  kid's birthday party or a baby shower that end in gunfire.

All thanks to decades of systemic racism and bigotry designed to marginalize and oppress the minority communities, denying them freedom, education, economic opportunity, or even the potential to have actual, stable home lives and the kind of upbringing that is likely to result in some other outcome than violence.

Amazingly enough, when programs like treatviolence.org go into these neighborhoods and teach people a better way, the violence drops radically.

And yet, those programs just keep on getting ignored by the mainstream because it highlights just how society's own bigotry made the problem in the first place. Can't have that now, can we?

I don't think she has a point, I just wish that we used situations like this more as teaching opportunities where she and other people could come together to talk about why she thought that was funny or correct. Instead, they just booted her out of school and now she's pretty much blacklisted (no pun intended) for life in general, although part of that is her own fault since she put her face out there in the first place.

But that kind of thing just pushes people who have screwed up ideas like that even further towards that end of the spectrum and makes everything more polarized. Granted, some of those people are beyond saving, but I think we should at least make the effort to try and make her and everyone else learn the right lesson here rather than, "behave how we want, or else". Threats doesn't create a lasting peace.

This also just gives ammunition to the, "colleges are just liberal indoctrination centers" crowd.

The first amendment is dead.  What happened to disagreeing with what someone says, but appreciating their right to say it?

Did she say anything more offensive than "fark cops"?  Or "cops are murderers"?  Or "white people - if you're not with us (the demonstrators) you are murderers"?  People are walking the streets of our major cities chanting these things every day.

People need to understand two things:

1.  Most "racists" don't dislike others due to their color, but due to their culture - and they usually misunderstand that, as well.  True racists are really ignorant people who have very little influence on the world beyond the doors of their rented mobile homes.  At the same time, we must understand that discussing crime statistics is not racism.  To point out the dozens of shootings that occur in Chicago alone each weekend is not racism.  To point out that more unarmed white people are killed by police each year is not racism.  To point out that 90% of interracial crimes involving black and white people are black on white and only 10% white on black is not racism.  It may simply be people saying "We have a unique opportunity here.  Let's examine the whole truth that may lead us to a solution."

2.  People are sick of the hypocrisy of and lies.  When a demonstrator grabs a megaphone and screams "All cops are farking murdering bastards", they lose me immediately.  I totally discount their march, their movement, their pain, their frustration, and their struggle.  When I watched hundreds of teenagers looting stores, only to have some minister complain about the outside agitators who came into town to loot and destroy, it has the same effect on me.  When people ignore the real numbers behind crime and police brutality to support their arguments, I can't take them seriously.

I don't disagree that they also cover it, but probably not with the same relish, depth, and dog whistles that Fox News and conservative media in general do. I think the bigger question is, what makes random crime particularly newsworthy? Fox viewers get off on it because it confirms their worldviews, but that aside, covering yet another shooting doesn't signify anything beyond that crime and poverty still exist, and there's no reason for a national cable network to be broadcasting stories that would otherwise be limited to local news.

BeotchPudding: Mrtraveler01: Wanted to get in here before the "Farkers with alternative opinions" start telling us that she has a point.

Black Communities largely see this type of violence as a byproduct of a system that offers them poorer schools, healthcare and over all infrastructure, the violent police forces are just the icing on top of an assault from all sides cake.  Police forces are also the most direct and observable of forces arrayed against them so obviously that's going to be the one that gets the most attention.  I have heard the fix yourself first (to be more like white culture is the implication) but without the resources of white culture, it's really not a reasonable expectation.

MerelyFoolish: The first amendment is dead.

When people ignore the real numbers behind crime and police brutality to support their arguments, I can't take them seriously.

bad dancing and flavorless food?

Joking aside, they mean the protestant work ethic and personal responsibility.  How community is focused on is also different - it's basically just an undercover way to call black people lazy and selfish as far as i can tell.  There's this delusion that black communities are suffering because of the lack of black virtue and community empathy, but the opioid epidemic similarly shattering white communities along with increased incarceration and academic under performance among white males is showing us that white culture is no more immune to these societal  pressures than black culture.

Most schools have code of conduct that both students and employees are expected to follow.  Failure to do so results in discipline.

Embarassing the school, wearing school swag, in what can be viewed as a somewhat racist, or very poorly judged (at best) video online with social media would violate most of those.

Oh ok.  I guess I missed the national news stories and public protests about it.

You guys can deflect or deny all you want.   The simple fact is black people killing other black people is a huge problem, far worse than cops killing blacks.

Murder is far more frequent amongst blacks percentage wise than in any other race or than interracial homicides.

Any time somebody points this fact out, that person's statement should be promoted....not silenced.  (Even if they don't have good intentions with the statement)

Somebody has to get serious about blacks killing other blacks and call attention to it.

Black people:  racism!!!

You can pretend that ppl pointing out black on black violence is a problem is "racist" and then refuse to acknowledge it and guess what:   It'll never change

Or you could address the problem and do something about it (that's what anybody who actually cares about black people would do)

65 years since the Civil Rights laws, and Blacks still have what percentage of decent jobs? Or can drive, or walk, or jog down the street without being hassled?

It *is* racism.

How about white-on-white violence with guns?

THAT'S MY FREEDUMBS!!!!!

It's discussed ad nauseum outside of racist echo chambers. There's also the issue that most crimes are committed by family and close friends, which upsets the gun-loving types. Lastly, this subject tends to be brought up regularly by racists trying to deflect from someone who clearly said something racist.

Nope, never been discussed in the last 40 years, ad naseum.  Nor have the socio-economic factors, and what it would take to fix it.

But, that said, person A killing person B, usually in a close circle of friends/family/associates is a considerably different issue from a person in legal authority, weilding leathal weapons, killing unarmed civilians for the crime of being the wrong colour in the wrong place, even if a crime is involved.

Apples.  Dragon-fruit.

That is the comparison you just made.

You know why big things don't get fixed?  Because lots of people talk big about fixing it all in one go, with no real solutions.  Big problems, in systems that you can't stop and rebuild from scratch, require iterative progress.  Otherwise known as 'start small, fix one thing'...  in this case, maybe stopping cops from killing unarmed civilions because they are the wrong colour.

To say that it's okay for black people to say certain words but not okay for white people is racist.  Unbiased and non-racist people know this.  Either it's wrong for all or it's okay for all, but don't say you're not racist if you believe in this double standard.

It's a private university.  If she was expelled, I'm sure they have explicit rules that she violated.  If she left voluntarily, you have even less ground to stand on.

They didn't take away her 1st amendment rights. She can post that video again.  She can make a new video lambasting the university.  She can wear blackface and perform a 1 person play she wrote where the main character does nothing but take drugs and rape white women.  Just as she has a right to do those things, the university has a right to not allow her to enroll in their private classes.  The first amendment, since you clearly haven't read it in a while:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I put the key part in bold, so you can see it more easily.  No one took away her rights; she exercised hers, and they exercised theirs.  You don't have a constitutional right to attend a private university, just as the university is not bound by the constitution to keep anyone who enrolls regardless of behavior.

Any you seem to be resorting to the argument 'You cant fix this if you dont fix that'.

If you bother to read anything I write, I never say one isn't important.

My argument is that *maybe* this is a place to start working on things?  It won't fix everything, but it would help.  Then we can work on the "Let's fix everything in one go, and make the world a utopia" plan.

Is it really that hard to understand, or is it just willful ignorance?

The moment it went from being about police brutality to being about race is when it doomed itself. I've said from the get-go that cops don't kill young black men because they are black but because they believe that they lack the class status to have their killers held accountable. Plenty of homeless white people get brutalized by cops of all colors for the same reason.

Somacandra: Somehow I have a feeling that the white student who made the racist video has never paid attention to African-American media or any activism concerning street crime in majority black neighborhoods. Because there's historically been a lot of anti-crime and anti-violence activism, especially through local churches and mosques. And now gets to wonder why whitesplaining shiat she knows nothing about gets her in trouble.

Ever notice how the mainstream media doesn't cover any of that?

It's because in most of the newsrooms, they are probably reacting exactly how she depicted. They don't care. It doesn't get ratings.

Remember how people have noticed that a missing white woman gets a lot of attention, while a missing African-American barely gets mentioned?

Same news media.

The very same news media that is falling all over themselves to inflame passions.

It's farking rich how the media and entertainment industry is so supportive of BLM despite being in the best possible position to do things to help portray African-American communities in a positive light, to help save lives, and to make it so that images of African-American men on the news occur in segments other than ones that reinforce stereotypes.

The media and entertainment industries have made good money off of the suffering of the Black community.  Their response? Pulling a couple of episodes of sitcoms that might be considered offensive and try to shoehorn some non-white actors into plots that aren't written for them, about them, or by them.

Is the girl an idiot? Sure, but she's an idiot who made a video less than a minute long.  How many years worth of footage has the media industry produced in this decade alone that says the same thing, but in a far more dangerous manner?

Dude, she made a racist video while wearing university apparel. She was "representing" the university by virtue of wearing that shirt and the university decided that she did not represent that university's values. If she hadn't of worn that shirt, the university would have had less of a justification to expel her. She signed her own death sentence.

It really isn't anything more than that.

More like who gives a fark if she has a point.  Why did she get kicked outta school for this?  Lol

Because she was stupid enough to wear a shirt with the university's name on it while making that video for starters...

That seems like a dumb reason to censor someone.  Maybe they should make you sign an agreement before selling the shirt.  That way only true believers get to exercise their first amendment rights while wearing the shirt.

It's a private university.  If she was expelled, I'm sure they have explicit rules that she violated.  If she left voluntarily, you have even less ground to stand on.

If she left voluntarily then that's on her.  Otherwise I don't think private institutions should be able to take away you first amendment rights outside of the institution... If you disagree with me that's fine.  I'm guessing you also supported the NFL over the whole kneeling thing right?

Nobody took her rights away. She's fully free to post on tiktok all she likes...just not while being affiliated with that school. Freedom of speech doesn't include freedom from consequences.

So this woman is paying money to go to the university and is then told to only say things the school seems appropriate even when outside of class or risk expulsion.  How does she have freedom of speech? How did you feel about the NFL btw?

Private organizations have the right to conduct themselves as they see fit within the bounds of the law.  If I was working at the Buffalo News and published a video talking about how bad the Buffalo News sucked and how evil my bosses were, they'd be well within their rights to fire me.  I exercise my rights, they exercise theirs.  Her freedom of speech is why she isn't going to jail over the situation, because it is illegal to make it illegal to make videos like that.  You seem to think that a private organization has to eternally keep all enrollees no matter what they may do, but that isn't how it works at all.  They have rules (in this case Christian values), and she violated those rules.

She knew the rules, she violated them.  What part of that statement isn't sinking in.  It still applies even if she didn't bother to read said rules.

To use your level of obtusely ignoring reality, that's like saying "I didn't know it was illegal to stab someone.  Why am I being punished?"

Did the government kill that child? No? Then these incidents have nothing to do with each other. Police murdering people and non-police murdering people are two different kinds of problems with two different kinds of solutions. But you knew that already. You just wanted to drop in and yell, "What about black on black crime!?" as if you just came up with something intelligent and novel.

MerelyFoolish: The first amendment is dead.

Right? How dare people move a muscle and get their own damn self killed?

I suggest you make a racist video, wearing all the swag you have frommwork, and make it obvious you work for them.

Let's see just how quickly you discover that you are also working under a code f conduct that you didn't know about.

You are generally free to do what you want.  But if you make your employer, or your educator look bad, they have the rght to not associate with *you*.  And that means termination.

That is what you are not getting.  The school is the injured party, not her.

Farking Codes of Conduct...

Did she do it during class?  Why should the school be able to control someone outside of class?  It's a simple question that no one has provided a good answer for.  If you just disagree that's fine, we don't have to agree...

Usually there is something embedded in these that basically says that you represent the university (or company for that matter) even outside of class. By wearing the shirt, she was "representing" the university whether she realized that or not.

Time to put this racist "talking point" out to pasture yet?

Just because Fox News doesn't report on these doesn't mean they don't happen.

When CNN, MSNBC, ABC, BBC, Wash Post, LA Time, and other major liberal media start presenting this as the issue that is responsible for a majority of black deaths, then maybe your point makes sense.

One hand pull in a nascar garage gets 120 hours of coverage, but one 3 year old black son shot dead in violence gets 30 minutes.

Time for heads to be removed from assholes, and get woke to reality.

So your premise is that news coverage is making people protest?
So why isn't news coverage making people wear mask? Wear condoms? Not default on their mortgage?
Why doesn't the over-reporting of police killings get cops to kill less?

You can pretend that ppl pointing out black on black violence is a problem is "racist" and then refuse to acknowledge it and guess what:   It'll never change

Or you could address the problem and do something about it (that's what anybody who actually cares about black people would do)

Actually, maybe that is a stupid premise.

I'm Hispanic and have lived in the hood all my life. So according to some people I should fear the gang members in my neighborhood. So why do I fear the police more? Because I know how to avoid gang members. There is no avoiding the police. I've had cops do break neck uTurns to check me out. And I wasn't doing anything. And the thing is, if I'd had a gun I would have shot and killed that cop. Because I have no idea why he did that extremely fast aggressive U turn. Hell to be honest I'd probably shoot anyone doing a u-turn on me like that not just a cop. But, if a criminal did a u-turn on me like that I'd know why and I would have already avoided something like that happening in the first place like driving a Cadillac at 3 in the morning in the hood.  Or having upset him in the past.
See a dirty little secret no one talks about is, a lot of murder in the hood is street justice or over a girl or over family. So, since that is the case, people don't worry about it. It's just life. being killed by the cops for almost no reason while unarmed should not be a part of life.

You can pretend that ppl pointing out black on black violence is a problem is "racist" and then refuse to acknowledge it and guess what:   It'll never change

Or you could address the problem and do something about it (that's what anybody who actually cares about black people would do)

It's discussed ad nauseum outside of racist echo chambers. There's also the issue that most crimes are committed by family and close friends, which upsets the gun-loving types. Lastly, this subject tends to be brought up regularly by racists trying to deflect from someone who clearly said something racist.

So let me guess, you're in favor of greater government spending on urban education and infrastructure, expanding Medicaid, perhaps a federal subsidy for home purchases in low income areas, raising the minimum wage, and all of the other things that could help reduce crime and poverty?

That would be a start.

Unfortunately it doesn't cure one of the bigger issues.. hereditary racism.  Educating that out of people will take a long time.

Or just make Racism illegal?

Smells pretty bad up there huh, see some peanuts or a gerbil?  If you can hear, you could be neck deep in that wcho xhamber of yours?

Yes, police involved shooting and other negative police stories are dramatically over-reported based on the actual percentage of violence they represent in this circumstance, if news were prorated based on violence then less than 1% of a day would be a bad cop story and 23.6 hours would be drugs, gang, poverty, crime, and murder.

But the thing is, I'm sure you think only the community can fix that. And it isn't the tax payers responsibility.

Mrtraveler01: Chuck87: This video is not "deeply disappointing".  I'm not sure why this is considered offensive.

It doesn't matter why you're not sure why its offensive. The university did and her wearing university apparel gave them the perfect excuse to expel her.

You may be right but in my mind I think the only mistake she made was wearing their shirt while doing the video.  I just don't see this as racist.  Especially since she used the word "People" when regarding their responses to killing and not the term "Black people".

gar1013: Somacandra: Somehow I have a feeling that the white student who made the racist video has never paid attention to African-American media or any activism concerning street crime in majority black neighborhoods.

Welcome to America. Everything is about money money baller baller bling bling.
Not sure why that means, BLM, doesn't have a valid grievance.

MerelyFoolish: The first amendment is dead.

Please go read the first amendment and tell me how it applies to the response of a private university. It's not dead, it doesn't apply here.

Right-hand-side is the face she makes as she's complaining about how those people are allowed to use the N-word all they want but she can't.

To say that it's okay for black people to say certain words but not okay for white people is racist.  Unbiased and non-racist people know this.  Either it's wrong for all or it's okay for all, but don't say you're not racist if you believe in this double standard.

What?

I can call my girl friend Babe.
I can't call my boss Babe.
This isn't complicated.
You're so disingenuous.

Wrong.  I was specifically referring to saying something is wrong to say because of your race.  Your example has nothing do with race but with relationships.  If you said that black people can't say "babe" but white people can, then that would be racist.

Man there sure are some vocal snowflakes who are just sooooo mad that a private Baptist university would kick someone out for violating a code of conduct that she'd agreed to when she was accepted. And there are the snowflakes who are soooooo mad that they just can't say some words without people thinking them racist jackasses. You have the ability to say them, but there might be some societal pressures that indicate that just isn't done in polite company, since some folks went and ruined it with all that systemic discrimination, violence, and those pesky lynchings.

I suppose this is a safer space for them than going out and just and shouting some things at random black folks to see what the reaction would be. While you're at it, maybe you should try some random epithets for the Irish in Boston, or maybe go to certain neighborhoods in New York to bandy about your favorite terms for Italians or maybe some Jews, and see how far that gets you, you know to prove your point about the reverse racism. It would totes be worth the broken jaw and cracked ribs, right? THAT would show those Libs!

Or you can natter on here, and keep trying to polish the argument that you're TOTALLY going to use next time you meet a random Lib in the street or at a Town Council meeting.

Y'all motherf*ckers got some very weird fantasy fixations. Just saying. Some people dream about impressing the ladies by being schmoove and witty. Have any of y'all thought about maybe going to see someone about these anger issues? Just a thought. No pressure. But this ain't normal is all we're saying...

Steakzilla: Al!: Steakzilla: I understand the point you make.  But what's the difference between limiting someone's free speech and limiting someone's freedom when they join a cult?  Would you really support Scientology holding people against their will if they wanted to leave?  Why is one right ok to sign away and the other not?

Wait.  Is she a (former) Scientologist being held against her will?  Or is the university holding her against her will by booting her?  Or is she a Scientologist holding others against their will?  I'm confused.  Kidnapping is a crime, and no part of our constitution should ever be misconstrued as granting a private citizen the right to infringe upon the rights of another private citizen.  No rights were infringed upon as far as I can tell with the matter at hand... she made a video that the university didn't like, and in order to keep their private club they way they like it, they kicked her out.  That's all, and none of that is infringing on any rights.  I'm not sure where Scientology comes in to the conversation.

It was a thought exercise to see how many rights he thought it was legally ok to sign away when you are part of a private organization...

As far as I can tell legal contracts do allow you to sign away an awful lot I don't agree with it but it seems to be the case

You are generally free to do what you want.  But if you make your employer, or your educator look bad, they have the rght to not associate with *you*.  And that means termination.

Neondistraction: These idiots seem to think that people only care when it's a white cop that does the killing, but they'd be just as upset if it'd been a black cop that knelt on George Floyd's neck for nearly 9 minutes.  They just want the cops, regardless of color, to stop killing a disproportionate amount of black people.

Is it really that hard to understand, or is it just willful ignorance?

In response to the killing, the mayor of Minneapolis cried on television about the death of a black man at the hands of a white police officer.

Anyone who's been paying attention knows that that's not what it's about, but for a lot of people that would be all they would see of the situation.

It's not willful ignorance, this ignorance is taught.

FarkQued: Yes, police involved shooting and other negative police stories are dramatically over-reported based on the actual percentage of violence they represent in this circumstance, if news were prorated based on violence then less than 1% of a day would be a bad cop story and 23.6 hours would be drugs, gang, poverty, crime, and murder.

What number of unarmed people being killed by cops is an acceptable number based on the US' crime rate?

NearCanuck:I guess we need to know the student code of conduct she agreed to.

According to their handbook, there are several rules she may have violated.

If she used HSU-provided internet to upload the video, she is violating the the code of conduct (Internet Access B 8. e.)
Under Policies, Judicial Policies, the university outlines their legal standing that they can expel any student whose actions negatively impact the campus community.  It also states plainly that their jurisdiction is defined as applying to "conduct that occurs on university premises, at university sponsored activities, and to off-campus conduct that adversely affects the university community and/or the pursuit of its objectives." It goes on to state that the code of conduct applies from the moment it is signed to the moment of graduation, and can even be applied to incidents that occur prior to signing if the Dean considers it valid.
Section 6. under Policies states that students can be reprimanded for any behavior that creates a disturbance or distress in others.
Section 9. under Policies explains that the university holds its students and faculty to a much higher standard than law requires, and that they base this on the Bible.
Section 26. under Policies again states that students and employees are expected to maintain these high standards on and off campus, during class, and during personal time.
Section 28. under Policies states, in part, "The student who enrolls at HSU should expect to become a part of the total campus environment. He/she should realize the uniqueness of the university in terms of its traditions, goals, policies and regulations. In becoming a part of the university, the student agrees to uphold these characteristics."

Reading through their handbook, it appears that there was likely an informal process to first deal with the situation, and if the student feels they've been handled improperly or unjustly, there is a formal process that follows.  I have no idea whether there was a formal hearing for her, but HSU is clearly within their rights to terminate her enrollment for no less than 2 years based on the code of conduct.  While I don't feel her post is outwardly racist, it is ignorant, and it definitely was intended to provoke a reaction of some sort, and it would be ridiculous to believe that no one was made uncomfortable or put in distress by the video, nor should any reasonable person believe that the video could not possibly adversely affect the community or the pursuit of HSU's objectives.

Zero.  Police are trained to handle difficult situations, and must be held to a higher standard than the population at large, because we trust them with weaponry and broad authority to use it.

Yep, she is absolutely correct.  Not that I would ever be so stupid as to point it out in a public forum where I could be identified.  Statistics and logic are meaningless in the twit-sphere.  Which is basically the entire country at this point.

Sure, Somacandra, she doesn't pay attention to African-American media.  Yeah, that's the problem.  Perhaps she was not so much reacting to articles in the, or any, paper, as she was to shiat that's closing down her neighborhood due to broken windows and looting.

BeotchPudding: Mrtraveler01: BeotchPudding: Mrtraveler01: Kit Fister: BeotchPudding: No outrage in the media over these actions.

FTFY. I guarantee you that if you asked the people in the community there, there'd be plenty.

They're poor minorities in "bad neighborhoods". Therefore, no one listens because they don't give a shiat for exactly the unspoken attitude you demonstrated.

They do report on it in the local media. I know because I live near St. Louis.

The Fox News watching crowd just refuses to recognize it because it gives them an excuse for them to hand wave cases like Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd.

Wow, I finally watched the video.

11 edgy seconds.

Five years older, and it probably wouldn't even  have crossed her mind to post something like that.

Hopefully she can use this whole scenario for personal growth.

Good news, it's slowing down. Only sixteen in Chicago last weekend.
