Alas, poor John Roberts.

The Right Winger Batan Death March seems to have left him behind to die with the crocodiles shedding tears over America's demise as a world power, a democracy, a liberal-enlightenment nation, and a neo-liberal economy. One by one all the true conservatives are abandoned by the Movement-Aryans, thus becomeing RINOS in a world of dinosaurs and winged reptiles.

Conservatives haven't changed.

Fascists have changed from squeaking mouse-like shrewish creatures to monsters with giant red teeth and claws, horns, antlers and armour-like skin that even truths and facts bounce off of them like all the other insults hurled by the birds and mammals, warm blooded creatures increasingly endangered as the White Rhino, extinct except for two females.

My bet is that he sees the shifting public dynamic and the change of demographics. Given the spikes of civil unrest, and other major political issues, he just doesn't want to add fuel to the fire, right now anyway.

A theory I've read is that he says the Democratic wave coming and is trying to see-off a push to pack the courts. It's as good a theory as any.

It's fun to ignore that Justice Roberts just wrote a detailed road map for lazy lawyers who want to overturn abortion access to follow if they want his vote the next time this comes up.

These judgments don't have much corporate influence. Give him something substantial and meaningful to work with and he will expand corporate powers to be above federal government powers. Then the next train carrying oil from Alberta to Texas that crashes will set off a great awakening as it were.

People tend to misinterpret SCOTUS rulings anyway. Roberts was not defending abortion rights or R v W. He was providing himself cover for when he does vote to overturn R v W by backing precedent __this__time__. Then when he write the majority opinion that overturns Roe, he will be able to cite his deep concern for the court overturning precedent, and his deep reluctance to do so, except [reasons] compel him to correct what he sees as a major mistake.

When the political spectrum moves to the right, those who were conservative before now end up further left and are regarded as liberal, leftist or whatever.

There was a graph illustrating that some time (possibly years) ago, but I couldn't find it.

Republicans have headed past conservative.
Conservative judges aren't necessarily the same brand of conservative as Republicans anyway. It's  conservative to not challenge a previous ruling even if it's not following the Republican ethos.
He also might just be getting a little bit more liberal. It's pretty common. https://www.google.com/amp/s/fivethirtyeight.com/features/supreme-court-justices-get-more-liberal-as-they-get-older/amp/

That is certainly a possibility. That said, experts on the matter, who I can only defer to as I am not, certainly think he trims at times for political reasons.

And this is not abnormal. Supreme Court justices have always considered politics and public opinion in making decisions. The notion that "judicial theories" are these things that dominate what happens at the Supreme Court is essentially a myth that is used by layers to justify the legitimacy of the court.

Wasn't roe v wade based upon right to privacy from the government intruding on your life?

Fine take away that privacy (rule the govt can intrude) and use it for things like firearm registrations.  Then point out it was roe v wade that was stopping it... but peeps wanted that gone

The constant march to the right demands ever-increasing purity, doesn't it?  The fascism of five years from now will look on the Trumpists with disdain for their liberal Marxist weakness.

Roberts is exactly who Roberts claimed to be.  It's the rest of the Republicans who have chosen this madness.

I know three woman (those are ones that I know of) that have had abortions - all three Catholics.  Two of them are conservative, one progressive.  There is no stomach out there to limit abortion rights.  So it won't happen.  Besides if they do, what else would the GOP have to run on, it keeps them in office.  Although,  I was surprised by the LGBTQ decision.
