88 bucks for a baseball.

You can get game-used MLB baseballs all day long for 50 bucks or so, less for little known players, more for autographs.

Can't help but wonder if the 88 is intentional.

Remember when Facebook purged a bunch of Trump ads like two weeks ago? Interestingly enough, it happened to be 88 ads.

The campaign placed 88 ads with an obscure concentration camp symbol on them.

Is this site actually associated with Trump at all?

If not, I could easily see this as being some kind of sick marketing gimmick. Put in a dog whistle that is guaranteed to get noticed, but still has enough plausible deniability, and then during the inevitable shiatstorm, the site gets exposure for tons of new customers that may otherwise never have known it existed. Plus, they get the trigger the libs by paying $88 for a farking baseball.

Maybe get some really proud boys to stand there in some designer Hugo Boss baseball uniforms (maybe one team in black and silver, the other in grey and black) and play baseball with these balls.

Oh, and maybe they can try to "call their shots" before each time at bat, taking a moment to reach with an outstretched arm and point with their whole hand to where they think the ball will go.

I disagree because the worst case is usually the outcome in regards to Trump. I suspect that there were some marketing folks who modeled the demand curve over price and saw a huge spike in sales at 88. Knowing it was a bunch of WPR (White Power Republicans /I know redundant) being giddy at the hidden message they went with it for the $$.

$3.56 in labor and material costs converted into $88 in revenue because WPRs want to say Hail Hitler, just not out loud with company around.

UX complaint -- the color selection in the order form and preview image are not linked or handled by a single field.  You make one selection on the form, but you have to click an entirely separate part of the page to change the preview image to match.  I wonder how many customer complaints that'll generate when people do not get the product they intended to order (assuming anyone at all buys any of these).

Unless some popular cart software is coded super bad, most inventory is pulled from the distributor's feed and is reduced only when the item is shipped or the site should reduce only when a purchase is made. Otherwise all the search bots/crawlers will make your store unusable.

All baseballs are hand-stitched. I don't think there's been a viable machine for stitching the cover onto the ball yet.

Not to MLB standards, maybe.  I'm sure there's a machine that can stitch cheap nylon string onto pleather panels around a hard rubber core.  Trump standards aren't very high.

There is a science to pricing.  That's why you see prices that end in $.99. It's all psychological.  This is not an accident.  The price has nothing to do with the market value or the cost of the item.  At best, it's some assholes trolling using Nazi symbolism.  Which is worrisome by itself.

I'm with ya in spirit and assume your good intentions but JFC can we lose 'white trash' as a saying already? Just call them what they are; no unintentionally coded racism is necessary.

While we're at it 'grandfathered in' - a reference to laws assessing your legal ability to vote, as in "if your grandfather was eligible then so are you but if he wasn't, well, tough shiat Mr. Recently Liberated From Slavery" - can also go away.

These are maybe not as obvious as things like "that's mighty white of you" and "Jew them down" but they are just as egregious and given their widespread uncritical use, perhaps even more pernicious.

The English language is a wonderfully complex instrument for expressing what you mean, with like 170000 words in current use. We don't need 19th-century slaver bullshiat.

My Summer of Base Ball: 1993. My ship was in the yards at Long Beach. I lived in San Diego. A lot of Spring Training Games in Yuma (Last year for the Padres there) & Phoenix, AZ. Minor League games in Rancho Cucamonga (my Quakes) and Lake Elsinor (Storm). Of course, the Las Vegas Stars (made a couple of trips there). San Diego Padres, and in the LA Metroplex the Dodgers & A's. I saw 125 live games that year. It was awesome.

Didn't care if anyone went with me or not. Sat in the cheap seats. I prefer to be high up looking straight down the 1st base line. Best acoustics: A's. Easiest in & out for fans: Dodgers. Chavez Ravine was designed for cars. Best seats: Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (stadium is called The Epicenter because that's where the Quakes are): concessions stands have seating at 1st & 3rd base, you can get a counter seat fight at the 3rd base line; I call it the Eatin' Seatin' eaven if the Quakes don't. The Storm had (not sure if still do) Hot Tub seating for parties - the Soakin' Seatin'.

Every year I find my life has some kind of theme. I always buy a Christmas Tree ornament that reflects that year. At 64, my "Tree of Life" is well decorated with memories of what defined that year. This year is our 25th anniversary, but I'm learning towards a Mask ornament. I've had ornaments made, so maybe that'll happen.

I have a shelf of autographed base balls. My best is my 1964 Cubs ball autographed by the team. It's in a clear box and protected. I'm afraid to even open it to look at the signatures. My late sister was a Special Ed PE teachers and she left me a box of autographed balls (basket, footballs, soccer, base ball, bats, ....) I need to sort someday.  I'm bad at this.  Don't need the cash but I have no kids, and my family has died out. Hubby's family are immigrants with no interest in Chicago, my history, or even any of my likes. Some of them aren't even sure what my last name is because I'm an outsider who married into their immigrant community. They have no more interest in my memorabilia than I do in this Trumpstuff. So, I know it needs sorting and selling, may as well get the price for it, eh.

I'll bet dollars to dinars that in 100 years, my bits and bobs are going to be worth more than these racist tchotchkes. Had an aunt that collected bakelite salt-&-pepper sets. Some of them are racist (and hidden!) in a box marked "Don't Look!" Back then, these things were "funny & cute." They are very hard to hawk on ebay and the like.

And that's what's going to happen to all this Trump 88 stuff. 50 years from now, people are going to be looking at this crap in estate sales and asking, "Wait. Trump wasn't president in 1988, was he? He can't have been the 88th president, so what's this mean? You have to really study to learn about racism. (And that's a good thing.)

Wait -- hold on a sec.

I build custom e-commerce sites for a living, why does this shopping cart trick work? It sounds preposterous to me.

Everything you do with the shopping and the cart is handled client-side, the server neither knows nor cares what you are ordering until you actually check out and feed your credit card number to a payment processor. The actual engine doesn't save or record any of your actions until then.

Why is it tracking how many items you've ordered and subtracting them from inventory as if you already bought them? There are far easier ways to put limits on purchases, through either volume or cost, and there are far easier ways to track user behavior for marketing/analytics purposes, so this doesn't make sense to me. It's a virtual store, the items you order don't exist until you buy them, you are depriving them of nothing.

Can any developer farkers clue me in? Is this some kind of anti-injection attack security safeguard, or is the Trump store just using shiatty e-commerce software?

A: Because some sessions are stored client-side in cookies, and some are sent via ajax for server-side updates (IE, amazon, walmart, etc) for cross-platform carts.

I just ordered about 3000.00 worth of stuff and put them in my cart with no intention of buying them

That still has little to do with depriving the storefront of any actual physical inventory.

Cookies and save-state sessions are still all client side (and I always recommend they expire after 24 hours). Even Ajax calls are mostly just for contextual updates and analytics monitoring. Nothing is happening until you actually pay for the goods. The virtual store has an infinite supply of shopping carts and a limitless number of items. It shouldn't matter how much you order but don't pay for (though marketing might not like the optics, but.... well, fark marketing).

It sounds stupid and dangerous to store vital functions in an incomplete user session, clogging up the system. That's basically like a rolling DDOS attack. Whoever designed this CMS designed it badly.

The idea is that, if you put something into your cart you don't get to the checkout and discover that someone else bought the last one.

So the web site flags the items as "Not currently available - in a cart".

Depending on how these items are released this could lead to this exploit. If enough people go and "put things in their cart" and they are not release until say a timer runs out then the web site could report zero items available.

It is not bad programming if you don't want people losing out on purchases that they've already put in their cart.

Not to argue, but then why does this say that I have the inventory cornered on blue ties?

How much is this a concern? Unless you're Ticketmaster and you expect a "run on the bank" the minute a product is available, you're not going to disappoint many people.

The bigger concern is people ordering products and squatting on them so they can buy them later, quite possibly in the order of several weeks. Merchants hate that and it's something I've advocated for a long time: Don't let users sit on products. Either buy them or destroy the session.

Of course if there's that much demand for your products you should never be low on inventory anyway.

Because they're tracking user shopping habits rather than purchasing habits.

If the programmer of this site was smart, they'd set the user session to expire after 1 hour, after which all items go back on the "shelf". An easy fix that takes 5 minutes. Tiktok users are dumb.

Fair counterpoints. I was mainly pointing out that the Trump store isn't doing anything that major retailers aren't in terms of saving the qty data server-side. But, you're right in that it normally doesn't reserve the qty against their main stock level.

Ishkur: How much is this a concern?

It is a concern if you do not want angry customers. If items are not flagged as "in your cart" then anyone can effectively take things from your cart.

You would not allow this is a real store so they do not allow it in the virtual one. I didn't invent this.

Nothing is "in your cart" until you pay for it. There is no cart. There is no shelf. The system creates sessions and products and db listings as needed. Think of it as like Ebay: You don't have it until you buy it. You can get sniped at any time.

You'll have even more angry customers if items are constantly out of stock because some dickhole tiktok users didn't close their sessions.

Light pink in color, adorned with a darker pink daisy print,

I'm on a bit of a bender so maybe I'm just seeing things wrong, but isn't it actually dark pink with a lighter print?

also, it's super classy that they just slapped a non-color-coordinated tag on the corner rather than trying to integrate Trump into the design. probably why it's so cheap relative to most of the other dreck.

In a shiatty online purchasing system that is likely true. In non-shiatty one people want to be able to shop like they are in a store.

I do not own one of these systems so I have no vested interest here. And I am sure both shiatty and non-shiatty systems exist. I am just describing the non-shaitty ones

Not that shiatty if it can't be broken.

In non-shiatty one people can put items in their cart and leave their cart in the corner of the store where no one else can get them, making it even shiattier.

Did you have a point? These systems exist ... I was noting them for those who are interested. No system is perfect.

Why don't you go out shopping. Try to find a store that lets you shop from other people's carts ... should be fun.
