Maybe he ought to shut his farking treasonous mouth before he is dragged off to a court where he is charged with treason.

Or, keep talking, boy. I will like it when you die.
You have been a figurehead of ignorance, racism, and voodoo politics.

Which nation is the "our nation" he's talking about? Because if it's the nation I think it is, it hasn't existed since 1865.

Is he referring to the nation that raised an army to kill as many of the United States of America's soldiers and sailors as possible? After all, that was what the confederates wanted to do, wasn't it? Kill as many of the United States of America's soldiers and sailors as possible (and throw in civilians, too) to either win the war outright or force so many casualties the United States of America would be willing to negotiate a peace?

I'm not even talking about the long-term political goals of the confederacy, I'm just talking the tactics the man one bucket-of-KFC-skin-lodged-in-an-artery away from being Commander in Chief is venerating.

Not really, Andrew Jacksons statue outside of the WH is what he is upset about. Andrew Jackson was an Indian killer though... so not CSA, but not exactly a good dude either, so BLM is fronting for POC of all colors, and that is good.

I honestly can't tell if Pence and his ilk actually believe what they say or if they believe it will gain traction with the voters and engender support.  Is it propaganda or genuine belief?

According to the Trumpers these days, the Confederate veterans were made into American veterans after the war, so dishonoring them exactly the same (if not worse) than dishonoring those who fought for the Union.

Also they say (in mixed company) that the Civil War had nothing to do with Slavery, and it was the evil Democrats (now and at the time) that were evil slavers.  The Confederate Army was a Republican institution....

The rabbit hole never ends.

'Indian killer' is a bit generous. Jackson was a genocidal (and murderous on an individual scale, to boot) tyrant who explicitly ignored the SCOTUS when they told him to quit his shiat.

No wonder he's Donnie's favorite.

Except they weren't.

IIRC, pension benefits were extended to a few surviving widows well after all of the soldiers who actually fought were dead. And some POWs were buried in national cemeteries. That's about as far as it went.

Rs are teaching at gold fringe-level straws here.

Bold take. So the Confederate troops who fired upon the grossly out-manned Union troops stationed at Fort Sumter and seized it to kick off the war were heroes. Got it.

Let's be as clear about this as anything ever has been or will be: the CSA was never a nation. Not for a minute not for a heartbeat not for a yoctosecond.

There was an attempt, sure. But unless and until they won ... they were merely traitorous ratfarking slavers.

And they didn't win. No win = no nation.

I know the news and subby said he actually discuss confederate statues. Is that true or false?

Are we sure he wasn't talking about Washington and Jefferson? Cuz that seems like what he was talking about.

"The foundation of America is freedom. But the foundation of freedom is faith," he said repeatedly.

This is such a nonsensical formulation. No wonder he likes it so much.

This country doesn't have one lone foundation, but slavery was certainly on that list.

The institution of slavery was grounded in faith. The preamble of the Confederate constitution mimicked that of the United States but for the addition of the phrase "...to which ends we invoke the favor of the Almighty God..." (how'd that turn out for you jerks?)

So in fact America was built in part on the opposite of freedom, justified by the self-righteous believing they were favored by God.

As usual folks like Pence look at the world upside down.

How about a compromise?

You can keep your asinine confederate monuments if you'll agree to one of the options below:

1) Have a statue of the appropriate Union solider/general/whatever next to the existing monument pointing a gun at it.

2) Put prison bars around the existing monument.

(I'm not opposed to other suggestions.)

This comes from the War Department honoring the obligations of the Confederate states who promised their soldiers a pension. The federal government did this because, despite their treason, having tens of thousands of disabled veterans starving in the streets was a bad idea.

So you can thank the Confederate sympathizers for agreeing with a robust federal welfare state.

Because Trump explicitly instructed the IRS to NOT enforce those rules.

Early on, he issued some kind of directive (I don't know if it was a formal EO, or what form it took) that ordered the IRS to not enforce the rules about keeping religious bodies politically neutral as a requirement of their tax exemption.

He spun it as promoting "religious liberty".

I really don't understand what the disconnect is here.

I know that the south has been whitewashing the history of the civil war, to make it look like it was just a mild misunderstanding.  But the rest of the entire world knows what really happened.

In short - and I know this has been said billions of times lately - the south were NOT the United States at that time.  They literally made their own country and fought AGAINST this one.

Those people were not American heroes.  They were Confederate heroes.

This is not in dispute.  There is no question of this.  There is no confusion.
So how is it that the conservatives, the very people who boast about how patriotic they are, are glorifying those traitors?  And, most of all, how are the POTUS and the VP among them?!

This literally makes no sense to me at all.

MysticKakarrott: According to the Trumpers these days, the Confederate veterans were made into American veterans after the war, so dishonoring them exactly the same (if not worse) than dishonoring those who fought for the Union.

That was about eligibility for purposes of a single specific veterans benefit, and the act came decades after the war, so only a handful of veterans were ever eligible for it.

It didn't make every Confederate veteran a veteran of the US armed forces for every purpose, and even if it did, they STILL took up arms against the US and they STILL fought to defend slavery.  If anything, them being actual US veterans makes it WORSE, since a right-wing argument I've heard against the CSA being treasonous is that before the Civil War, US citizens owed no loyalty to the Federal government, so Southerners joining the CSA military weren't people who owed loyalty to the Federal Government for purposes of the Constitutional definition of treason. . .but if they were US veterans, then engaging US forces negates that and makes them traitors.

. .. and my rebuttal to them saying that is to point out that Bowe Berghdal and Chelsea Manning are also veterans of the US Army, so where are the statues to them and isn't saying bad things about them dishonoring US veterans?

I had a guy block me on FB for asking that question once.
