You don't need statues to learn history.  Taking down the statues doesn't suddenly remove slavery from everyone's collective conscious, or the history books.  Statues are, for the most part, glorifiers.  They're there to say, "This right here, this was a great man who we spent a lot of money to immortalize in statuary."  Or sometimes -- less often, it seems -- to say, "This right here was an event we shouldn't forget."

But you could remove all of them.  Every last one of them.  And you know what would happen?  Sweet FA.  Because history is not contained within those statues.  It's contained in the hearts, the minds, and the books.  It is immortal.

Thankfully, Mr. Trump, you are not.

Trump said that America had a "great history," people needed to learn from that history, and "if you don't understand your history you will go back to it again."

Statues don't teach history; well-funded public schools do.

This should be an interesting election.
And he may find his way to the wrong neighborhood one of these days.

Time to remind Trump, Iran just put a warrant out on him and he could be enslaved into a prison someday very soon.

I guess Trump should be reminded that his grandfather only made his "fortune" being a money launderer and running brothels in the "Wild" West.

Dear Trump Fans:

If you wonder how we will learn history without those statues, I have 3 things.
1) what have you ever learned from seeing a statue of a dude on a horse?
2) I am gonna blow your mind when I show you these things called "books"
3) we learn history not from statues, but at schools. You know, the thing your secretary of education wants to shut down?

You don't give a fark about "remembering history". The history of those statues is all about white supremacy and Jim Crow. Go educate your own selves about the United Daughters of the Confederacy and their monument shenanigans.

Ok, sure: then let's have statues of them losing the war.  Stripped and beaten.  Let's have statues of them causing the deaths of +600,000 Americans.  Let's have statues of them trying-and failing-to destroy the country.

Let's not have noble, lost cause statues.  Let's have auto-erotic asphyxiation statues of them.

Let's compromise, well take down the statues but put up new ones of people like John Brown and Sherman; that way people will still learn how slavers should be treated.

Oh I believe all the statues should stay up, with big plaques explaining their treason and hate and why they shouldn't be forgotten.

I've learned a lot about the past from statues. There were lots of big green people that had horses and everyone was covered in bird shiat.

look, if we had statues of Hitler, we'd also need statues of the guy who killed Hitler. except then, the nanites programmed to build statues of the guy who murdered the guy who assassinated Hitler would start devouring all the resources on Earth and eventually the entire planet itself.

Unright: I'm going to go to Christian churches and put up statues of Lucifer everywhere.

oh, lawd. and can you even imagine if we started putting up statues to commemorate the "heritage" of all the rapes, genocides, incests, incest-rapes, sodomies, murders? it is sort of hilarious diametric opposite - that people who claim to have read that book, are kinda-sorta exactly doing all the things listed in that book - such that, well fine then, maybe making statues about it might actually learn 'em a thing or three?

I'd probably start with a statue of serial-murderer David (yes, *that* David) carrying around his bag of 200-300 severed dicks?

Unless you have immigrated here from a one of a small handful of countries, you have never been a slave.

As for the statues of a lot of these confederate celebrities, most were built as a result of giving the finger to minorities after the Civil Rights Act was passed in the 60's so they are not exactly longstanding historical landmarks to begin with.
