WGN used to run Perry Mason when the Cubs were on rain delay.  I just remember it being Raymond Burr shuffling around and inhaling slowly with his thumbs in the pocket of his suit vest.

I had no idea Bunker Hill had green screens back then

It's not remotely Perry Mason though. Why they chose that property I have no idea, since they aren't using any of it past the characters.

I have zero connection with the old Perry Mason because I do not reside in a nursing home, so to an outsider such as myself it seems pretty good. Quite watchable, good characters. As I understand it, it's more of a prequel to the old show. Not sure he was bisexual in the original, but HBO gonna HBO.

NO HBO is gonna Netflix. HBO can clearly do it right with shows like Euphoria.

William Gibson has a great short story about LA art deco - The Gernsback Continuum.

That was my concern (haven't watched it). Love Perry Mason for what it was and don't want the whole "reboot" thing.

Did I miss a story beat?

If you're referring to the conversation with the T-1000 on how Mason earned his blue ticket, he was deflecting by saying he was Welsh and queer.  The real reason is covered in the flashback.

Kinda threw me for a loop. In my defense, I was quite drunk.

Fair enough.  All these "old timey" shows make me crave whiskey beyond a reasonable level. Something about the music and art direction always makes me want a drink...

Twice as bad for a smoker. There is a cigarette in damn near every scene. Hard to cut back while watching it.

I haven't been on any of the live show threads but thematically I see a lot of crossover with Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.  This is fine, I like the environment.

The new show is Perry Mason in name only. And that is farking fine with me.

Ep 1 was a fun intro, some dark humor that I enjoyed. I just hope the lead cleans up as the series goes on. This was a character that had almost no prospects and little hope for a future. Now there's a case where he can devote some life to and focus on. A redemption story is something that everyone can relate to or at least enjoy, and I think that's what we have here.

Very cool to see Tatiana Maslany in a shorter version of Helena's blonde wig though. Have not seen ep 2 yet, please no spoilers.

Without spoilers, I can say that it is clearly shaping up to be a prequel.

Ditto.  After episode 2, it felt like a shared universe, almost.

Probably because they brought in Nic Pizzolatto to helm it.   His pitch was probably "Perry Mason but dark as shiat" and they ran with it.

Why though? Because you are afraid you'll burn through all 83 novels worth of material too quickly? I like a period detective piece as much as anyone, but there are a million other properties I'd grab before Perry Mason if that's the direction I was going.

That's pretty stupid. Perry Mason, as originally aired, was dry and fun in the very procedural sense. Very plot centric. I don't mind and even quite enjoy gritty shows (I love Bosch, for example), but why even call it Perry Mason? It shouldn't be confused with Matllock's genteel southern thing, but it most definitely wasn't "I am vengeance! I am the night! I am PERRY MASON!!!"

I watched the first couple Bosch and I just couldn't deal with the character's pretty much rank stupidity.

They set up way more than green screens next to Angel's Flight. They put a whole façade up and everything. It was pretty cool.

Probably never watch it but whatever.

The character was way too edgelord for me, as much as I hate that term. Just being a general dick even when he was clearly farking absolutely wrong.

That farking song has been stuck in my head since I saw the announcement of the show.
I hated the song when it came out, and I hate it now.
