Because you don't dox your sources.  It's a shame, but it was probably the right call.  If Woodward can unilaterally decide to out one of his sources, then why would anyone open up to a Post reporter?

THIS.

It wasn't just randomly doxing a source. It was a response to Kavanaugh publicly lying about everything he'd said in private.

Maybe.  I'd be more inclined to believe if Woodward can unilaterally say, "This person is lying and here's how I know", sources would be less likely to f*cking lie to them or about the stories they offer up.

At what point do you cross the line where protecting your source who is lying about the story they gave you is more in service to the public than saying, "This is a lie and here's how I know."

Bob Woodward is an asshole. Carl Bernstein is the real journalistic hero. Woodward just rode on B's coattails.

I was too young to understand anything about Watergate other than to be fascinated by the hearings under Sen. Irvin for a whole summer, playing jacks with the TV on, no idea why I was so interested, no adults were around me when I watched.

Anyway, in the years since, I have definitely gotten the impression that Bernstein was the smart, leg-worky one and Woodward was the "publicist". I guess I'm not alone in that impression.

Woodward, you did one good thing once a long time ago, in partnership with someone else, and you've been riding it ever since. You had another chance to do something good and you blew it. You let Kavanaugh slide and you will never be forgiven for it, by me at least.

Yeah, there's no reason to think it would have made a difference.

Justice Beerbro was rammed through because fark the liberal majority, that's why. They didn't doubt who he was. I suspect a lot of grayhaired old Senators were absolutely disgusted to see that sniveling, out of control child's performance in his confirmation hearings, but they knew how much America didn't want him to be one of the nine unelected dictators of its judicial branch and it was more important to hurt all of us for decades to come than it was to preserve that last scrap of decorum.

If he couldn't sink himself, Bob Woodward wasn't going to sink him.

And if it were about RGB or Sotomayor you and the payment would be screaming about the Post being a radical left socialist newspaper that only protects radical left socialists. Just look at what they did to Nixon!

This is news, as it calls into question the character of one of the 9 most important people where good character and a history of impartial decision making are a large part of the job description.

Judges can be impeached. In fact, impeachment of judges is more common than impeachment of Presidents (though statistically speaking both are pretty rare).

It's something the new Administration ought to look into.

Did you read the article or just copy your comment from somewhere else?
It's about a poorly run newspaper with terrible moral values on all counts - truly the antithesis of pure quality journalism and work culture - that hides behind a journalistic standard when it's convenient.

It takes a 2/3 senate vote to remove. Even with a Dem senate majority it will not happen.
There is an easier way to increase the size of the SCOTUS. Then you can add more liberals. No idea how much easier.

IIRC he openly lied in his hearings; contradicting the email snippets from his friends about being blackout drunk on the boat.   nobody in the "MSM" caught it though, because they're  "experts" and know what they're doing.

Pretty sure impeachment is entirely in the realm of Congress and the executive plays no role whatsoever

Pointless argument.  If what was already known about that beer besotted frat boy, Kavan-O wasn't enough to get him laughed out of Washington, do you really think Woodward's article would do anything? If you do, you are delusional.  Publishing would have started another knife fight that would only have hurt the paper for outing a confidential source.

In this case, Marty Baron made the right choice, protecting the integrity of the paper rather than wade into the GOP sewage.   Remember this was the editor that took on the corrupt Boston Archdiocese for shielding priests who rape children.

This was a failure of the government, the press has been doing it's job.  Don't expect the press to be your personal superheroes.  They can only tell you what's going on.  The rest is up to us, and we failed to keep the fascists out of Washington even when warned about them.

Which sources in official positions do all the time to protect their jobs. You can take a "it's never OK to lie" position, but us grownups know that's not true.

Honestly, I came into this planning to be pissed at the Post and Kavanaugh. I came away thinking the Post made the right call.

The Trump administration has been a disappointment for me in a lot of ways. One thing I'm proud (and excited!) by is how Pence/McConnell have reshaped the federal judiciary. God willing, they'll get another 4 years to go even further. This is a personal hope, but by the time Trump's 2nd Term ends, Chief Justice of these United States Brett Kavanaugh leads a 7-2 Constitutionalist majority on the court.

//why yes, Neomi Rao would make an excellent replacement for Ginsburg
//gets giddy thinking of that confirmation hearing

It wasn't even that dramatic. Newsrooms have a content management system where you write your article and save it. Anyone can see articles that are being worked on in the system, including writers and editors. So he worked on the article, there was a discussion about publishing it, they decided not to, and that's it.

FFS...why doesn't the Post publish photos of each and every Republican as Satan and be done with it?

All this '....and Trump paid the Russians to pay the Taliban to kill American soldiers while Kavanaugh was running rape prisons for lynching illegal immigrants and persons of color.." is getting pretty old.

They are sure to run out of nonsense before November if they keep this up.
