Will we ever see the labeling of people's sexual preferences go away?

2020-06-28 4:10:58 PM
Yeah, in NZ a member of parliament's sexuality is not really an issue for the broader electorate no matter what side of the aisle you support. Which is a huge change given how contentious the debate was around legalising homosexuality in 1986 with the passage of the Homosexual Law Reform Act. Amazing how much progress can be achieved in a generation.

Good luck with that, it will be a constant Studio 54, they won't get anything done.

In NZ yes, frankly we are getting there. In other places, such as benighted medieval swamps like the USA, not for a long time

Hopefully, but it's gonna be a while at this rate. That it merits mention at all outside of dating contexts implies we still have too damn much bigotry to go around. Going by a lot of the people I keep up with, being anything but straight isn't that rare, there's just too many assholes that think people suddenly coming out over the last decade and change means gay's contagious and we should all be worried.

Er. To add to that, yeah, the other part of the problem's that at least one god supposedly hates you if you aren't straight, and their followers and a few others either miss the days where they could lynch folks for that, miss homosexuality being a crime, or are Westboro Baptist Church.

Seriously, assholes, stop being assholes.

The dating context is still a real big one to clear.  I think you're going to have to have gay people feel comfortable enough to show straight level public PDA for people to understand who is a couple and who isn't without asking questions.

Then keep religion out of politics. It amuses me that the UK has an official state church, the head of state is the head of the church, bishops sit in Parliament etc yet religion plays almost zero part in politics, while the US  technically has separation of church and state yet religion plays a huge part in law making and politics.
Here if a politician starts talking about god we think he's gone loony. Blair didn't start mentioning god until after he left office.

/And in the UK it was a Conservative government who legalised gay marriage.

Well, it hasn't always been that way, eh? If memory serves there were a few years back in the day where the church and politics were inextricably intertwined across pretty much all of Europe.

No, I think you're still human and limited to desiring people with matching sexual preferences so it's not going anywhere. It's funny that you think you're special, though.

And of course, people are going to use labels for themselves, its a convenience in some contexts.. but if you don't understand the history of outside labeling of LGBT people as a way of dehumanising them, and the reasons for very strong self-labeling as a reaction and defense mechanism then you need a lot of reading not a Fark post to bring you up to speed.

Special? I think equality and acceptance are very good things, and places which give people that to a greater degree can be proud of that yes.  I think that the day when the sexuality of a political candidate is just not really considered important for good or bad is a good day.. we aren't voting for who we may have mutual sexual attraction with (well I'm not, YMMV)  We aren't there in NZ yet, under-representation and marginalisation are still a thing enough that the number of LGBT lawmakers is still newsworthy. Equality is news because of inequality.

I will have you know that if you counted all the closeted Republicans, we probably have a much more gay congress here in the states.

Hiiiii, gay person here. Just as black people don't want you to be "colorblind" we don't want to be invisible either. Not until we're 200 years or so into complete equality and broad societal acceptance. Kthxbye
