Impressive first step.

Of course they stick in a jab at the godless libs by saying new flag should include "In God We Trust"

This is in the bag. The House has approved. The Gov. said he will sign it.

The Senate just needs to vote one more time.

Did they change it to a white cross on a white background?

Last I heard the governor was against the change.  The SEC/NCAA/Athletic Departments must have had a chat with him.

Good for them. The in god we trust argument immediately rules out the other three contenders : the Bonnie blue, the magnolia flag, and the Stennis flag.

The first two were the only other two flags Mississippi has ever flown historically; both had a strong connection to the confederacy. The Stennis is the only recent suggestion.

As I understand it, this removes the flag immediately. Mississippi will go without until November, at which point it will go to voters on a referendum. I'm pretty sure "no confederate iconography" was a part of the house bill as recently as this morning, but I don't know about the final version thy was passed.

Fortunately, Georgia already took away one option away from Mississippi. In 2003 they took the actual national flag of the CSA, slapped "in god we trust" on it, and called it a day.

Yeah, just watch. It's Mississippi. They're going to change it to a Klan hood.

Well, I'll be damned. They've had the flag since 1894, so it's only taken them 126 years, but dadgummit...they finally pulled their heads out of their asses. As far as designs go, I rather like the Stennis flag.

They should go with that one. Of course, it's Mississippi, so watch them fark this up somehow. BTW, the part of the flag that contains the Confederate Battle Flag emblem is called the Union. Ironic, no?

Letting them have In God We Trust is good., It's still the national motto and saves face. That's important in cultural reconciliation.

I think it should just be a black flag with #50 in the middle.

The flag was put to referendum on 2001 or thereabouts, and won handily with 65% of the vote. Shocked it was so few, TBH

LAF.

I'll take things that will never happen for $200, Alex.

Every flag wavin, southern hero, terrorist hatin' patriot, confederate is loading up another 30 round magazine while muttering "the fark we do."

Tonight's not going to be the last politically motivated shooting for quite a while. Yes, it's a good start. Know there are a significant number of private, non-legislative people, who are fervently pissed off about this right now.

They could go back to their original flag. Although it looks like something made by a six year old and placed on his parent's refrigerator.

That's these idiots. It's private property and they are grandfathered from the new laws to remove it.

I read the breitbart thread on this. It was surprisingly subdued. There was the talk of culture and history but the overall tone was one of resignation. Like they knew the fight was lost on this one. Lots of insults as usual but not a lot of anger.

For many people of the south, especially those who have been there for generation, the confederateflag has nothing to do with racism. It's about their collective identify, their culture, a brotherhood of survivors. The attack on the flag is coming from people who know very well the flag isn't about racism. They're trying to erase identity. All American identity. They single out one group and attack first, getting support. If successful, your symbols of identity are next.

In God we Trust is the national motto?

Go count how many times the word "God" appears in the founding document of this country.

Yes, it is. It was officially adopted in 1956.

In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.

-- Mississippi articles of secession, ratified by the state legislature , January 9, 1861.

They are setting up a commission to propose a flag for people to vote on. I give it at least a 50/50 shot any design is rejected and then this quietly disappears.
