The statue was paid for in part through donations made by thousands of African-Americans.  Frederick Douglass spoke at the unveiling. But I guess they had it all wrong.

They need to replace the plaques on these monuments to make them more readable.

No, they wouldn't stop to read the farking plaques. They have no interest in being informed when they can be outraged.

Not really. Either could be used with different meaning. To implies that her purpose is to educate and win people over. From suggests a more adversarial defense. The over-all context suggests that "to" is more appropriate, defend __to__ protesters, educating them, and winning them over.

Okay.  Here's my opinion and it might not be a popular one given the comments I've read.

The protesters kind of have a point.  It's incredibly paternalistic.

"Thanks Mr White Man for giving us our freedom.  You're one of the good ones"

Remember, "uplifting the Negro" is exactly what the slave apologists claimed to be doing.

So while it's not as bad as the monuments honoring the Confederacy, it's not good.

2020-06-27 8:12:29 PM
I always saw that statue as a freed slave getting off his knees and standing up to Lincoln as an equal...I always thought that was obvious for anyone who looked at it for more than 30 seconds.  The whole "EMANCIPATION" written underneath the guy  should have been a hint.

Any chance his junk gets caught in the slats of the shell and he needs help soon-ish, only to be set free when the shell finally collapses under his weight?

I would pay serious money to see the after-image of Trump standing over McConnell, flipping him off while he lay there crushed to death from D2S's "239 lbs"

Have you considered Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments?  Trump and the Republicans are actively destroying these monuments.  I'm for preserving these and some other monuments while wrecking and eliminating monuments to racists and traitors.  Simple decision, really.

You're only paying attention to the "white part" of history.

Yes, the statue was mostly funded by donations of freed slaves and black Union soldiers, BUT the entire planning and design committee was white. Black people paid for it, but they had no say it what it was actually going to look like.

Yes, Frederick Douglass spoke at the unveiling, and he openly expressed his DISPLEASURE by saying the statue "showed the Negro on his knees when a more manly attitude would have been indicative of freedom."

There was a quote from Lincoln that changed my view of the statue 180 degrees. It looks paternalistic without the quote, but with the quote, which should be on the plinth, the former slave is rising up, on his own, as Lincoln admonishes him not to kneel before him but to greet him as an equal.

I'm all for it.   How does this sound?

This statue of confederate general cletus q pigfarker was erected in 1964 by scared, ignorant white people desperately trying to cling to a racist heritage of terror, intimidation and lynching.

Follow that up with the Lyndon Johnson quote about the lowest white nan and the highest white man and you're all set.

Nope, that's right. Defending it TO protesters means she's using words to explain a thing so the stupids don't shoot themselves in the foot. Defending FROM would mean whacking protesters with her frilly umbrella while gently but firmly castigating them for their stupidity and rush to judgement.
