Yeah I think it's not a bad thing. A lot of the beat cops look like the neighborhood these days, maybe it'll get them to move up and may Be they aren't sociopaths?

the starting salary for cops in my town was lowered from $78k to $60k under the latest contract.  make you wonder what they got in exchange

I get that some positions apply OT to pension high 3/5/whatever.

I don't get how a partial year would do anything. Is their pension based solely on the last X months or something?

Lemme guess, the police union got retirement pay calculated based off their last pay period and not the average of their last 12 months of pay?

Like rates leaving a sinking ship.

They know that police conduct is going to be reviewed with a fine tooth comb and anyone with a history of violence is going to get fired, so they are grabbing their retirement benefits while they can.

This will be just like what some do after retiring from the military.  Enter private security with a 200% raise, better equipment, less oversight, and zero accountability.  The same private security companies who will be contracted to take over in areas where defunding the police was the solution.

Hicksville is on Long Island. I don't know if that can be called upstate.
I had to go there once to help out a MTA program that my company won(the first and the last one). I think the lawsuits are still on-going 15 years later. MTA made any customer meeting a living hell in old farts pontificating over nothing.
Hicksville was most definitely a commuter town for the city.

When did they move Long Island from the Atlantic ocean to upstate?  Hicksville is just about due east of Central Park in NYC.

Financially smart pig cop bastards taking advantage of all the hours they had to work gassing hippies.

Their retirement is based on their average salary over the last three years.   Rail road retirement is the same way.  It's why you see old cops (and engineers) working every hour they possibly can in the years just before they hang it up.

If we have no cops because no one wants to be a cop

People want to make money, people like to have a pension, and people like jobs with benefits. "Being a cop" offers all that. There won't be a shortage of people wanting to be cops.

Maybe the real issue the ones leaving the job don't want to face is what it means to be a cop. How many of these people leaving the profession are doing so because the only reason they wanted to be a cop is they'd get to do those things without repercussions? That's what it looks like to me.They come off looking like the character Jack Nicholson played in A Few Good Men where he's mad that people would dare question the methods he uses to do his job. Well, the mainstream has let the cops run things their way all this time, look at the non stop abuse of power that has been the result. Clearly they can be trusted to that extent anymore. It's time to redefine what we are looking for in a police force and hire people who can do that job.

As jobs that don't require a college degree go, being a police officer is probably one of the best paying, and isn't even in the top 10 for danger.

There are no good apples.  One bad apple spoils the whole bunch.

People always forget that last part, for some reason.
