That was "designed" by someone? No offense to this guy but that seems like something about 20 different t-shirt makers could have thought of independently.

Maybe now that it's such a common meme, but it was original then.

I assumed the headline meant the Federal Government had cut off all funding to NY City and/or state over some perceived slight to the President.

I hate what this timeline has done to me.

I remember some time in the '80s seeing a t-shirt with "I ☠ LA" on it.....

This was in 1977, more than 40 years ago, an idea has to start somewhere.

He would agree with you.
Glaser later said he was "flabbergasted by what happened to this little, simple nothing of an idea".

When that spawned millions of copycats, a friend of mine ordered a sheet of stickers that had a drawing of a screw on them. This was before the internet, so he had to actually do work to get them. Anyway, he spent the next few days slapping the screws over the hearts.

I (screw) NY
I (screw) my poodle
etc.

Fun times.

The best design has always been something that becomes so ingrained and iconic, and usually so simple, that people years later say " pssh, I could have done that."

So yeah, someone "designed" that.

When I was very young, the scrubbing bubble image inspired me to be a graphic artist.

The schoolhouse rock cartoon of the girl slipping on her I ❤ NY sweatshirt and going for a run (Do the Circulation) inspired me to be a runner.

Icons from my youth that shaped my life. RIPMG.

Time For Timer inspired me to gorge on slices of cheese.

Bugs Bunny inspired me to be a smarmy asshole.

I thought it was the sudden realization that New York has completely farked its Coronavirus response and on another level than Arizona, Texas and Florida.

What with the police standing down and the virus,

NYC is looking more like 1980 than 2020.

Original ideas, especially ones as simple as this that just 'click' and endure the test of time, are incredibly rare.

Hell, anyone could have thought of sliced bread... so why the hell didn't they?

That's how a lot of great designs are. Simple as hell, but effective and memorable.
