This is a problem for Gary. He'll never get his usual huge bonus from his real employer, the NBA, for his usual stellar work preventing hockey from overtaking basketball in popularity.

I'll watch hockey over any sport and I'm happy the players will continue to let the owners keep the bulk of the revenue however I don't understand this ignorant need to restart the season.

Last I read they are looking at July, cramming as many games as possible then not starting 20/21 until late December or January?

Unless they are looking to become a summer sport, why not just end 19/20 season and start the new season on time in October?

He took great strides last night, guaranteeing that none of the worst teams in the NHL get a shot at drafting a franchise player in Lafrenier.

Oh well. The bonus there is that my Red Wings season tickets keep getting upgraded because others are turning theirs in because they don't like watching their team get beat every night. Now I just have to hope we get to use them.

Some teams and fan-bases like winning Stanley Cups. If you are a Leafs fan I can understand where this could be a puzzler though.

I'll give you three reasons why this is happening:

- Money
- Money
- and Money

Remember, professional sport is a business first and a competition second.

Depends on the league.  The balance depends entirely on the owners' greed vs. their egos.  Although as long as they can force a salary cap on the players, the owners don't have to choose between the two.  But the owners' egos will always try to outspend the competition.

Which I can understand. In fact, because the team I support (Milwaukee, AHL) was amazing this season, I was banking vacation days & spending money for road playoff games and hopefully finals.

But it's almost July and the playoffs would be over by now. Why shorten next season also because of the late start? I think it's better to not award Lord Stanley's Cup and look forward to next season.

I look at it this way, the playoffs with the hub cities and bubbles will be very abnormal. By running late and starting later it gives the world time and a chance to develop vaccines and therapies where the regular season can be played on a semi-normal fashion. Football, with nearly 200 people crammed into the sidelines, will be hard pressed to start somewhere even close to semi-normal in September.

Regarding the hub cities, I've been hearing for weeks that Las Vegas is pretty much a lock for the West.  Does anyone else think Vegas would be a terrible choice?  Its economy is almost entirely tourist based, so they're desperate to reopen, which means that will probably happen before it really should.  Vegas reopening also means people coming in from all over the country, including COVID hotspots.  And do you really think all the NHL personnel are going to respect the quarantine and not go out of the bubble once in a while?

I don't think that's the case anymore.

Vancouver has said they're out. Reports are the health authorities wanted more than the NHL was able to do.

I think it will end up being Edmonton and Toronto. Canada will be cheaper to set up in and unlike the US, the country generally has its shiat together.

Since nobody is going to post a NWSL thread, is CBS adding artificial crowd noise to this broadcast? If so, and as I suspect, this is a worse level of artifice than XFL 1.0

It sound like they are, but it's just generic crowd noise turned down very low.  It doesn't sound like they're trying to tailor it to what's happening in the game like the EPL games have.

No, they're adding some "OOOHHhhhh"s on shots that miss the goal and #FakeWoos for saves and corners and shiat

While we're in a hockey thread, the draft lottery was last night.

#8 - Buffalo
#7 - New Jersey
#6 - Anaheim
#5 - Ottawa
#4 - Detroit
#3 - Ottawa (from San Jose)
#2 - Los Angeles
#1 - One of the 8 eliminated teams from the Qualifying Round

Yes, a placeholder spot won the drawing. They have the full thing on NHL.com.

They'll have a second drawing after the Qualifying Round with the 8 eliminated teams. They'll each have a 1 in 8 shot at drafting Alexis Lafreniere.

To think that Edmonton and Pitt have a 25% chance at that kid combined is an absolute travesty. It drags the sport backwards.

Hell Ottawa had two shots at landing their first franchise forward since Jason Spezza and there is a very real chance he could end up a Leaf.

Yeah. Because the leafs have such a good track record with up and coming superstars.

Might as well let Edmonton try to get one right before they reward some other team with top level talent for a bag of spare parts in return.

You mean like Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Reilly, Kapanen, Hyman, Johnsson, I could keep going if you like.  If you're going to dump on Toronto at least get some new jokes.  Zamboni drivers come to mind.

It's clunky, but this is no different from past years where a team not in the final 16 has a chance at the lottery.
